The director of this movie was also the editor and he creates a consistent tone and pace that is pitch perfect for the story being told. The casting is perfect and the acting superb all around. Word of mouth might make this a sleeper hit.
My husband and I have not read the books, but we LOVE these movies! They are highly entertaining and keep you squirming in your seat. The two main characters are now iconic, perfectly acted, and we cannot imagine a successful Hollywood version. Definitely one should see GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATOO before this movie. We cannot wait for the third installment!
Tilda Swinton's performance is the reason anyone goes to see this movie. There are some remarkably beautiful scenes especially those of her character's love affair but about 2/3 in, the movie devolves into some kind of melodramatic Italian soap opera. The cinematography of Milan and the Italian countryside is another plus. The audience en masse audibly expressed their dissatisfaction with the rather confusing ending.
What I can add to the previous reviews given that I've lived in L.A. for over 23 years is that this movie captures the essence of the city very well so I enjoyed the time and place of the film. But I recommend this movie with reservations because the audience member needs to be forewarned that she will spend her evening with a character from whom, most likely, she would walk away.
Loved everything about this movie. The cinematography was gorgeous and the acting top-notch. My friend and I left the theater raving about it. Go, go, go!
My husband and I were compelled to see this as we so highly regard the writing of Tennessee Williams. The movie depicts a particular time and place superbly - Memphis, Tennessee in the 1920's - and the contrast and conflict between its socioeconomic classes. This is not TW's best work but the screenplay is lovely none theless, using the loss of a teardrop diamond earring as a device to reveal the inner workings of the characters. The acting was, on the whole, very good - we were thrilled to see Ann Margret and Ellen Burstyn - and the costumes were gorgeous.
Wow! This is an extraordinary movie with a phenomenal cast. Where did they find Gabourey Sidibe, who, in the title role, portrays her oppressed character so convincingly? Mo'Nique as the abusive mother, Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey as concerned professionals also give superb performances. This film is so authentic, at times it reads as a documentary. We exited the theater moved to our core. BRAVO to the director, Lee Daniels!
Based on a true story set in South Africa during the height of apartheid, SKIN reveals the institutionalized racism of the Afrikaners and the degree to which this group would go to keep the races separate. An audience member can sit in judgement until she realizes that our own country's policies have historically been no better. Shot in and around Johannesburg, the movie includes some stunning cinematography.
My husband and I thought this was the best movie we'd seen in awhile. Everything about it was superb: the acting, the photography, the storytelling, the fashion...all top notch. We left thoroughly entertained and emotionally "filled up".
