Sorcerer's Apprentice was a fun experience but led to a frustrating aftermath, as I reviewed it in my head after the fact. The movie suffers from one glaring flaw: it doesn't trust its audience. The basic facts are overexplained (to the point of spoiling large chunks of the movie later on) and the audience knows way too much to enjoy Dave (Baruchel) as he discovers all this for himself. Cage (as Balthasar) is a really fun presence, as is Molina (as Horvath); these two look like they're having a blast. Baruchel acquits himself well, but the moments he spends with his true love sadly fall flat (for the most part). On the other hand, Toby Kebbell is largely squandered as a Vegas style magician who's there and gone. The effects are terrific and the set pieces are engaging. The byplay between Cage and Baruchel is also a lot of fun. I give it a B+ for good execution of a flawed story. I'd watch it again on DVD but probably won't sit for a second viewing in the theater.

I thought it was pretty good. I suppose I might like it more if it was PG-13, but overall pretty good. I liked the past and present bio of main character, I liked the look of the old shop the boy stumbles upon in movie beginning. Good storytelling atmosphere. Special effects were pretty neat but nothing mind-blowing. Plot overall was fun and entertaining. Cool villain, funny sidekick. Nicholas Cage did pretty good. The script was about what you'd expect for a Disney movie (full of foils, clichés, and predictable lines)—complete with cheesy ending. Kids love that stuff. The special effects were awesome, as always—another Disney hallmark. Cage played the sorcerer's part with a weary who-cares approach...less than inspiring...like it's clearly just another day on the job (set) for him. His co-star Jay Baruchel was convincing as an evolving nerd. Overall, I wouldn't say it's a "must see on the big screen" though, and I won't be paying to see it in the theater again.

This is a fun movie but there's something missing from it that doesn't quite capture the enduring disney magic that we're used to experiencing. I think the problem is, this kind of movie is the type you see once but doesn't have enough substance to warrent much rewatch value. I like Nick Cage but I felt that the movie felt very miscast. Granted I'm not a big Justin Long fan but the script clearly could have been better. Effects wise, you still get your money's worth.

This was very entertaining. The entire family enjoyed it. I would recommend it for ages 6 and up. Lots of action and interesting effects. Just enough humor to keep it light and fun, too.

Fantasy, action, great special effects, humor, romance make this movie fun for everyone. As usual, Nick Cage is special, and very believable as a master sorcerer. Alfred Molina does another wonderful job as the "bad guy". Watching is like being on a wild ride..especially during car chase sequence. Use of familiar Manhattan landmarks and terrific scene that pays homage to Fantasia & Mickey's sorcerer, so much fun to see in live action. Sit back and enjoy.
