Though I agree the story was a little weak, strong individual performances and the immersive visuals make the 'long' run time go by quickly. IMAX 3D was impressive, got a little vertigo that went away in about 5min when the movie started.

This movie is all about special effects. Not worth watching in regular theater. A must see in IMAX 3-D. Will not get tired of special effects. Story line is lame and predictable. Typical Hollywood plot where humans want nothing else but to destroy the planet and the military are the bad guys. What can you expect from Hollywood?
But, the special effects makes it all worth it! My children loved it too!

This is the third time I have seen AVATAR in 3D, but the firs IMAX ever. The movie is one of the best I've seen in my 66 years. However, I really did not see that much difference between regular 3D and IMAX 3D. It reminded me a little of the old Cinerama of the late 1950's combined with 3D.

Socially conscience theme, but too long

As a writer, it was obvious to me that no new ideas were created in this flick. Take the dragon legends of Eragon, the incubater tanks of the Alien movies (with Sigourney for reference), the flight antics of the Harry Potter class, plug them into the MATRIX and Voila - AVATAR is born. What I do applaud is the socially conscience theme which demonstrated how "man" pillages and burns the homelands of races of people to obtain resources that don't belong to them. In this case the metal was ironically called the "unobtainable." Parallell this with diamonds in Africa, Oil in the Middle East, and clean water in other unfortunate corners of the world. If we know this is wrong, why don't we stop it?!!!

I was absolutely impressed with the graphics of this movie. This was my first time at the IMAX and it enhanced my experience in such a wonderful way that i was extremely happy with this movie. The story line around the Avatar's love for their surrounding (earth, trees, animals) touched me very deeply.

Short and Sweet. I usually do not recommend or review movies as a whole, however, the 3D effects have come so far and so advanced that I would recommend Avatar in the IMAX 3D experience to everyone.

Its best viewed on IMAX in 3D it was made for this type of viewing. The special effects & CGI were incredible like nothing you will have seen. While the movie is long I did not find low points or think wow, this is long. It flowed well and kept me very interested & entertained. Others commented that the plot can has political views however I didn't find it was to the point where the point of the movie was lost. If you actually watch the movie & get into it you'll see there is so much more going on than just that. Its a great story (hardly completely predictable) & has a sequel-ending. Cameron found a balance of background story, fast action, romance & tied together with the incredible movie-viewing experience, its truly a must-see movie!

Any film that can sell out all seats in advance for an early Sunday morning showing has to have struck a cord with the movie-going audience. Certainly any film fan would want to see this film. I watched it with my children on the IMAX 3-D screen and they, and I, enjoyed it all the way.
The 3-D was great, the sound track was very decent, and the story was not so bad as others have stated. Predictable? Perhaps, but most films are. Boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl, has been used thousands of times and I would not want it any other way.

Well made picture with all the great elements: sci-fi, war, high-tech, fairy tale, frontier epic with indiginous people, beautiful sceneryand visual effects, romance and so on and I admit I enjoyed it and I was moved, but all the characters are too stereotypically good guys or too stereotypically bad guys. And there's nothing really new about everything. It also reminded me of Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke in many ways.

James Cameron has outdone himself on this flick. Although the movie is almost 3 hours in length, it did not have any slow scenes. The 3D IMAX experience is just that - an experience YOU MUST EXPERIENCE. The story line, effects, characters and pace were excellent. I walked out of the theatre believing I had viewed the BEST movie ever. My other 2 favorites are Gone with the Wind and It's a Wonderful Life. Excellent for all age groups.

Great special effects. The story however, is old. A "white" man comes to save the people. If one were to pick a part this movie many references to history would be found. From the aliens to the artwork and the buzz words that were flying around the movie.
On a side note I did note the shout outs to the U.S. military on several occasions. My favorite was:
" You've got to go where the banshees live...Hoorah." The place where the banshees lived happened to be named "Hoorah" Ha ha ha.
Big Hoorah! to all the Devil Dogs out there! Get Some!

We took our children, 9 & 7, because we thought it would be facinating for them to watch the creative brilliance that James Cameron spent years working on.
We wasted our money on 3D tickets because we would have been able to enjoy it otherwise....not many 3D images to appreciate.
Other than unecessary curse words, we all enjoyed the very entertaining film.

I visited an IMAX in 3-D experience when I saw the movie.
It was one of the coldest days ever in San Antonio, Texas! That did not stop an almost sell out crowd being there. The movie began at 10:45 p.m. and was over at 1:30 a.m.. I did not see anyone sleeping. Even the under 10 year old sitting on my left side was awake and enjoying every minute of the film.
I highly recommend this film to everyone to see!

I would advise buying tickets online a day in advance, and arriving at the theater 45 minutes before the showing. Bring a napkin or 2 with you to wipe off the lenses of the 3d glasses. The theater rinses off glasses before showings, but supplies them wet.
I highly recommend this movie in the 3d IMAX format.
From the beginning scenes; this movie pulls you into the story. Not only is this film a visual master piece; the plot, the characters, and the scenary of this alien planet command your attention and your emotion.
This movie tops star wars, and Lord of the Rings for scenery, imagination and creativity, and is a must see for anyone over 12.
6 out 5 stars. A must see!

OMG!!! What an awesome experience. I have never been to a movie that completely captivated me the entire time. Usually I tend to fidget my legs (crossing & uncrossing). I maybe did it once or twice the entire movie! I sat completely still and engaged the entire time. Also with contacts, I tend to get dry eye at movies and they begin tearing, but I didn't rub my eyes once until I took my 3D glasses off!!! I felt like I was actually in the movie with the characters. I was in the room or forest with them! Amazing! Even my husband said he wants to go again! He never wants to repeat a movie! If you're going to experience this movie, IMAX 3D is the ultimate! Well worth the added ticket price and wait in line!!!!

As said by others here, yes the story line is generic, but the message conveyed by the plot is just incredible. This movie will open the eyes of most who chance to see it, and leaves us all wanting more. the 2hrs and 40 mins were not long enough to spend on pandora. It's given people a new fantasy world to love, and shown to the veiwers an ideal once held VERY close to the human race.

I knew going into Avatar IMAX 3D that I would come out experiencing something completely new. Unless James Cameron was lying -this was top of the line stuff. I saw the trailer a few of times, but other than that -avoided everything else. When I finally got to a show that WASNT at 11pm or sold out, I was happy. There were no coming attractions. The movie was like nothing I have ever experienced. Granted, the story itself wasnt the most original, but he created a whole new world! The visuals and characters and action, all so amazing. Three hours later I could not even think of what to say about it. I told my wife the only way to describe this movie, was it made me feel like I did the first time I went to Disneyland!

The 3D effects of Avatar were the best I have experienced, especially with an IMAX experience. For effects, I give Avatar an outstanding. However, I left the theater feeling disappointed for how predictable and unoriginal the movie was. I expected something fresh. There was nothing new or original - same old story with political propaganda thrown in. In short, great packaging, poor substance - like a beautifully wrapped package with nothing inside. Disappointing.

I have been leary of the actual worthiness of 3D technology until I saw this movie. It by far surpassed my expectations. The 3D effects were amazing immersing you into the movie. The story is very well paced you will not get bored. It does not seem like almost 3 hours long at all. I thought they gave just enough background information to understand the story without lingering on unnecessary backlines. I purposely tried not to watch all of the trailers and read reviews for this movie before I saw it so I went in unbiased not even really knowing what the story was about. If you are planning on seeing this movie. A MUST see in 3D at the IMAX. The extra couple of bucks is money well spent!

I saw this movie at an IMAX theater in 3D. Very stunning visual effects. I guess it was worth the 11 bucks to enter. It gets 4 stars only because of the effects.
The story has been told countless times. Little Big Man(1970) staring Dustin Hoffman came immediately to mind. You know the story. Evil white man wants land that natives occupy. So if they can't buy the land they'll steal it by any means necessary. Including killing the native population.
Plus the movie drags out entirely too long. 2 hours and 40 minutes. I hate to see how long the extended DVD version will be. Anyone seeing this movie at home will miss the best of the special effects and will sorely disappointed. I'd give it a fair rating for home viewing.
