Possibly one of the best action/scifi movies I've seen. The special effects were impeccable, and the story was kept moving along very quickly by some snappy writing and good characters. The anti-colonialism message was a bit ham-fisted, but I didn't find it detracted from the rest of the film.

So coming from someone who saw the movie regularly first, I was disappointed in the 3D. They did an awesome job, but in my opinion it seemed that the movie was adapted for 3D not made for it. I mean there were scenes that were wow, but also a lot times that there was no 3D at all! Not to diminish the movie at all, because it IS spectacular, but I just feel it's not worth the 3D. Overall you can tell the difference, but all it is is just a little bit more depth.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I saw Avatar the first time on a normal movie screen and was amazed. But last night I splurged and saw it in 3D and on an IMAX screen. So worth it! If you're going to see this movie, pay the extra 5 or 6 dollars and see it on a huge IMAX screen with those bulky 3D glasses. You will be so glad you did. This movie blows my mind. The animation is so advanced - the CGI characters have expressions so similar to human expressions - it's uncanny. The 3D experience was thrilling. You actually feel like you're walking through the forests of Pandora, or watching the floating mountains go by your helicopter, or flying on the back of a banshee. The story, characters, action, romance, music, everything was well done.

When I was 30 mins into this movie I new it was an instant classic, I had been waiting for big budget-instant classic movie and went to see 2012 thinking that was it but they put all the money into the graphics, Avatar though went over my expectations, this is an Amazing movie,it has the perfect balance of Drama, Romance, Action, and CGI and a very good story line with a wonderful message. I have never seen a Graphic that close to reality in a movie before, so guys go see it but go see in IMAX 3D it worth every penny...Absolutely Breath taking!!!

my daughter and i are hearing impaired so some of dialog was missed, the visual was worth the price. we will rent this when it is cc and experience it all over again. my son plans to see it imax again. we all enjoyed this movie. i am 63 my son is 40 and my daughter is 30

King Kong, Bride Wars, The Haunting in Conneticut... Their has been many movies in our time. But, I have never seen such an amazing, spectacular movie you will ever see. It has a little bit of everything in it. I love it! It truely deserves an Oscar. No dought! The way the movie flows is PERFECT. I was crying so much because it was over! I honestly only watch comedies. But, this was.. much more... than just a good movie. Avatar is a beautiful movie with sights that no movie can beat. James Cameron has made an outstanding performance making this film! I am only 10 years old and it had such an amazing effect on me! They should DEFINETLY make an Avatar 2!!! It's just... trust me, anyone will FALL IN LOVE WITH IT! Thank you!

This movie far exceeded every expectation I had for it! I was fully expecting a Sci-Fi film that would be too scientific for their to be any enjoyment, but geeze was I wrong!
No matter what your expectations are of this movie, go see it. The previews do not do it justice, nor do they explain this well enough for you to be able to use proper judgment to decide whether or not to go. So go! See this movie! Try and tell all of these reviewers they are wrong.

I definitely recommend watching this movie in 3D, everything from creatures and plants to landscapes is terrific. The plot overall holds together until the very end, though it is kind of obvious what will happen from the very beginning: invaders with technology and no respect for what they do not know and understand versus sensible creatures that understand they are part of a whole that is in a delicate equilibrium. Technology versus ecology... humans versus nature... 1500's European colonizers versus native Americans or Africans. Overall, the movie is perfectly well done and entertaining. I just wish mother Earth = Gaia = Pachamama could teach us the same lesson humans learned in the movie when they began messing up the ecosystem too much!

Indeed it was a spectacle...the colors, the surreal world lights up around you in everyway possible - you want to reach out and touch the greenery, the animals and flowers.
The glorious moments created in this fairytale 3D wonder truly are impressive.
However, the story, as someone recently put it to me, is sort of a remastered Pocahontas.
Full of poignant and important messages, just a bit predictable and not all that clever.
What it lacks in plot it more than compensates with beauty.
Bravo!

Wonderful scenery but the "IMAX Experience" is overhyped and not much different from standard 3D. Not much of a plot (Dances With Wolves with a more feel good ending) and absolutely no character development.

Avatar was completely breathtaking. I saw the movie in IMAX and I felt like I was in the forest experiencing every scene and a part of the storyline. The directing, acting, and graphics in this movie is worth every award nomination. This movie should definitely be on your MUST SEE list.

This was a wonderful movie, and so glad we chose to see it in the IMAX theatre! Great special effects!!! For a long movie, 2 hours and 40 minutes it flew by. You won't be disappointed. I don't even like Action type movies typically but this was great!

I was disappointed. Movie was too long. I found it boring. The only saving grace were the special effects. It was not clear to me why the marines were going after these people in the beginning. I thought the glasses were unconfortable and annoying. Don't intend to go to anymore 3-D movies. I am an avid movie goer but this movie is not on my A list.

Avatar 3D truly takes you to another world. If I did not know that Pandora was fictional I could have believed that this world created by James Cameron was real. Avatar is an amazing and riveting plot and contains impeccable action. I hope that more Avatar movies come out and that the story continues. As far as film is concerned and how film takes us to another world Avatar has done the best job at suturing an audience to the film and taking them deep into this fictional land with all the reality that one can ask for with what technology we currently possess.

Cameron did an amazing job w/ 3D paying attention to detail, drawing the audience in with curiosity, effectively allowing us to explore Pandora with Sully. For that reason alone, you should see Avatar.

Wow! I just kept repeating the word after the movie finished. I knew the movie was very long so Iexpected a bit of fidigiting among my movie going neighbors but was amazed when the movie ended and everyone just sat there!!
The graphics were top notch, the plot imaginative, the characters were well thought out and the actors deserve much acclaim for their excellence in performance. Visually the movie was the most impressive I've ever seen, and my family and I can't wait to see it again.

Avatar 3-D (in IMAX) is a new experience in cinema -- the 3-D is wonderful without being too distracting. This is a classic war epic, with the American Military as the bad guys in a futuristic struggle for scarce mineral resources at the expense of the lives -- and spiritual wealth -- of the indigenous culture of another planet. The story line was not exceptional, and the script was less than poetic. I understand the value of visual spectacle in the pyro-technics of a war movie, but I would have preferred to see the Americans fighting for something enlightened. Nevertheless, this film is a "must see": it changes the movie-going experience at a fundamental level. Entirely amazing and enjoyable, even if it is not perfect.

Great movie for all ages over 10 or so. Extremely graphic and highly visually stimulating. It's less about the acting and more about the visuals, which are intense! Very interesting plot.

I love this movie, as well as all the people I have seen it with. There is no other way to see this movie than in IMAX 3D. The movie can definitely be interpreted a million different ways or can just be enjoyed for the film that it is. I'm not a big fan of sigourney weaver's character...but I understand the need for her motherly attributes to Jake. All in all, one of the best movies I have seen in a while.
