Waiting for movies to come out on blueray to watch on my 73" HDTV is typically good enough for me. Few times I bother to see a movie in the theater, and even fewer I leave feeling really good about it.
This is one of the movies I was exceptionally happy to have seen in the theater, on IMAX, in 3D.
This movie is an experience.
It is a long movie but at the end of it didn't feel long at all. I wanted more.
Enjoyed it so much there is a very good chance I'm going to see it again, on IMAX, in 3D.

Absolutely the most amazing cinematic experience of my life....James Cameron just solidified himself as the greatest director of all time. Old school movie fans (eg Casablanca) might not agree but Cameron didn't have Bogart to work with here. This wasn't just a movie its more like some kind of experience, almost like a ride for your imagination, you can feel almost.

I must say I dont care much for Fiction movies but this one was a great experience for me. The movie was excellent, well made and has a complete package combination as far as the plot.
Each character played the part to their best!
The spiritual one, the greedy ones, and the heroes..... great movie!

Avatar has exceeded all of the promises about changing the way we look at film. We saw the movie in IMAX 3D and found ourselves drawn in from the moment it started. For those who need it, there is plenty of action. However, the action is combined with a compelling story and plot that leaves you "feeling enlightened" (as my son said) after the movie. Take the time to go see this one -- oh, and do it in IMAX 3D. It's fantastic!

Saw this twice in 3 days... you need to see this movie in the theaters! The only reason for 4 stars was the IMAX 3D. After seeing it both ways; skip IMAX 3D.
This movie in IMAX 3D is (bad) sensory overload; full screen action is blurry, there's often WAY too much to follow on such big a screen, flight scenes may make you queasy. Didn't have these issues on a normal screen at all.

The movie was awesome, what I got to see of it. Warning to everyone who suffers from motion sick, you may get sick. I had to spend half of the movie with my eyes closed due to the motion. You actually felt like you were flying on the animals as they would jump off the cliffs and take air. Other than suffering from motion sickness, I loved the movie. Cannot wait till it comes out on DVD, maybe I will be able to watch all of the movie without the motion sickness.

What a great movie indeed! James Cameron put together such a realistic world on Pandora, especially when viewed in 3D on the IMAX. Truly amazing.
The story, akin to the plot from the movie "Dances with Wolves" takes you on an emotional roller-coaster.
I especially like that the movie was not dumbed down. Just b/c it's nearly 100% animated CGI does not mean it's Disney. There was just enough vulgarity and carnage to ensure the story was realistic and plausible.
See it on the 3D IMAX ... you won't be disappointed.

It's not often you are part of a movie that completely puts you in a world that you say to yourself "I want to go there!!" This is like that... I was throughly entertained for 2 hours and 40 minutes... Since I loved Dances with Wolves, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Titanic...this movie is in that heady tradition... Only Jame Cameron or Steven Spielberg have the clout and vision to make such a grant movie... It's innovative and takes risks... If I plan to see a movie the second time...that speaks volumes...and I plan too... You must see it the first time in IMAX 3-D...the shape of movies of the future...!!!!

Ground breaking - industry altering special effects. It is more difficult to develop a truly original story, and the similarity to "Dances with Wolves" has been mentioned, and I would add "The Last Samurai" as well. The climax could even be described as "Tarzan vs. Blackwater", but it still rises to one of the great Science Fiction motion pictures.

I was absolutely blown away by what I saw. Yes the plot is somewhat predictable, but the fact that humans have existed for thousands of years with over 2 millenia of recorded history, you're rarely going to develop plot with twists and turns that are TRULY novel.
That being said, Cameron outdid himself. The computer animation was seamless with the live cinematography. You can barely tell in a few action sequences, but visually and soundwise, this film is GROUNDBREAKING, IN A CLASS BY ITSELF.
RECS: You SHOULD see this in 3-D or you really miss out on the experience and it is WELL WORTH THE EXTRA PRICE OF ADMISSION. THIS MOVIE IS THE REASON WHY YOU SEE SOME MOVIES AT THE THEATRE. Breathlessly beautiful.

If it weren't for the jaw-dropping visuals that the world of Pandora had to offer and the amazing 3D effects, this movie would have only received 3 stars. Its plot is very reminiscent of many others about humans destroying nature and/or taking over land already inhabited by indigenous/alien people. It was sort of disappointing being able to know everything that was going to happen because it was so cliche.
That aside, the world of Pandora was so engaging I wanted to learn more! I had so many unanswered questions about how things worked and what things were named. One unanswered question in particular is "what exactly was this "gray rock" used for that the humans wanted it so bad?"
All in all this movie is a work of art!

My husband and I LOVED this movie so much, we wanted to go see it again the next day. The only downside was the long lines to get in. It was well worth the wait and the extra money to see it in IMax 3D. Can't wait until it comes out in BluRay. We will definitely be buying it.

This was one of the most visually stimulating movies I have ever seen. Packed with action, values and a good love story. I do not agree with some of the big critics that story line was shallow. It was actually refreshing! A must see in 3D. Loved it as well as did the whole family. (my husband and my kids 14,16,18)

This movie BLEW me AWAY....Awesome. Went to the 3D IMAX showing, I was sucked in from the beginning. This was the first 3D movie I'd ever been to and was amazed! The story line is pretty good, but the visually you will be in SHOCK & AWE! Go to this movie, sit back with popcorn in hand and enjoy.

This review is of viewing AVATAR in 3D in the IMax theater. I have to admit that the trailers didn't impress me, but once I saw it on the giant screen in 3D, it takes you in a whole new world with a excellent storyline.
I'm just afraid once this movie comes out on DVD, that it won't match the experience in 3D, but is still an excellent movie regardless.

I went into this movie with little background knowledge of the movie or plot. I was expecting to be weirded out by the blue alien characters. Honestly, it was weird at first, but it seriously grew on me. Then I was just immersed into the movie. They captured emotions unlike I have seen in any movie in a long time. The computer-generation was phenomenal, the plot was well-made, and overall, I walked out of the theater with a big smile on my face. I have not felt this excited about a movie since "The Dark Knight," and I came out of that theater smiling thanks to Heath Ledger's outstanding performance. Avatar, for me, pretty much had the entire package as far as I like in movies, and it takes a bit for me to say that regarding a single movie.

If you let yourself get immersed in the fantasy of it all, it is an absolutely great movie. if you are just there for the visuals, you will not be disappointed. We viewed the I-Max 3D and it was a really fun experience.
The future world using today's weapons and technology, makes a great counterpoint to the lush and gorgeous visuals of the natural world being invaded.
This film is fun as is and has great moral theme.
It requires another viewing to appreciate the finer items missed on the first time. Highly suggest that the 3D version be the one you see.

The sign of a great movie is that during the whole 2 1/2 hours, you are not tempted to look at your watch. Avatar entirely engages you in the world of Nav'i. The acting and story complement the special effects instead of being irrelevant to them. A much better film than Titanic. I hope Avatar takes the #1 grossing movie title it deserves.

You have to call this an experience seeing it on IMAX 3D, its not just a movie. And the experience was like nothing I'd ever seen. Though similar stories have been done before (so I'd really give it 4 1/2 stars if I could), it was still original and not a remake like 90% of movies these days. Cameron's attention to detail never ceases to amaze me, the characters, the world he created and effects were A+. Go experience Avatar!

This movie was incredible. Great story and how all of Pandora is 'intertwined' was lovely.
The acting was also superb. And then of course is the graphics, they were absolutely amazing. It really did look so real, and with the 3D it was even better than I could have imagined. Now I know why he waited so long for the technology to come out to make this.
Overall it was awesome; I couldn't even tell the running time was 2hrs 40min... it just flew by seamlessly. In fact I wouldn't have minded if it was an hour longer! Without a doubt the best movie of the year, probably best movie in the last 5+ years.
