Despite the fact that it definitely wasn't a complicated plot and borrowed a lot of plot vehicles from movies that have come before, it was truly a good movie in and of itself; i was expecting good special effects, but I wasn't expecting likable characters and an enthralling alternate universe. The last movies that made it this much fun to be engrossed in an alternate universe were the original three star wars movies. I think the thing that amazed me the most was that the world and the characters were so engrossing I didn't realize it was almost 3 hours long!

The special effects were spectacular and the movie was good. the Imax 3D experience was simply awesome.
I'm not all that fond of movies that try to teach me or have a message, so the unsuble references to the plights of the rain forest and aboriginal peoples didn't appeal to me. The storyline was somewhat of a cliche, but I suppose it's difficult to come up with something completely new. My bladder is no longer suited to a movie that's 2 hours and 40 minutes long, so the last half hour was seen through a yellow haze. :)

Loved this movie. And I think it was meant to be seen in IMAX 3-D, something some critics of the movie may not realize. The IMAX 3-D experience, for me anyway, mirrored Jake Sully's experience of entering his Avatar. And I've never seen 3-D like this. I want to go back to Pandora! In short, I left this movie feeling like I did when I saw Return of the Jedi as a kid. This movie made me feel like a kid again.

Went to watch the movie with high expectations from all the good reviews overheard and was not disappointed. There was never a dull scene in this movie. Colorful, entertaining, and beautiful. I would watch it again in a heartbeat.

I saw the movie first in a non Imax cinema and wanted to see it again in Imax. I felt disappointed at the Imax screen in the AMC in San Jose as it was not much bigger than the normal cinema. The movie was excellent, but overpriced for the size of the screen. Aside from the movie, the cinema charges $19.75 for two bags of popcorn and one soda from a fountain dispenser, a rip off!

This is such an amazing movie. At times there were parts where when the main character is in the machine connected to his avatar and people just stop it in the middle of what he is doing and it bugs me. When you see the movie or if you already seen it you'll see or have seen what i'm talking about. I didn't sleep well the night before so i kind of dosed off for a few minutes but didn't miss much. For a long movie it is good but seems a little dragged out.

As a wife that gets taken to many movies I do not like this one I loved. Even had a 7 and 8 year old with us that sat through the entire movie. They didn't want o get up to go to the bathroom, they enjoyed it that much.. FANTASTIC MOVIE!!

Avatar is an epic movie, don't miss it.
But don't make the mistake I made - be sure you see it in a full-scale IMAX 3D theatre.
The AMC Digital IMAX theatre I attended looked more like a giant old-fashioned TV screen than a real cinema. Nowhere does IMAX or AMC disclose that their Digital IMAX screens are substandard in quality and the aspect ratio is not even as wide as a consumer HDTV.
Until AMC upgrades their IMAX screens, they'll see no more business from me.

The best movie, I've ever seen. Period. It wasn't the best story, or the best special effects, but everything together made it more of an experience than any other time I've been to the theater. It actually felt like I have been to Pandora. A must see at the theaters.

This was my first experience watching an Imax 3-D movie and was a little skeptical at first. The glasses they gave us were like regular glasses not those cardboard ones we got as kids. The movie was Fantastic and just such a visual overload. I was so amazed at how well the 3-D exp. was. The objects really do come right at you and things just popped so much , it almost felt like I was there. The chairs we were sitting in were vibrating and rocking when big thunderous things happened. This is a must see. There were a few bad words for small children like sh-t and there was a kissing embrace scene in case you have kids and want to know. For the most part it was a great movie for the whole family.

I saw this movie yesterday at our local IMAX in 3D. It is without a doubt one of the best movies that I have ever seen. I would recommend it to everyone with one stipulation....you MUST see it in 3D and at an IMAX, if possible. The story is wonderful, the people believable...just an incredible two hours and 40 minutes. Kudos to Cameron and his vision. I fully expect to see many nominations and, hopefully, many wins with the Academy. GO SEE THIS MOVIE, you won't regret it.

I would recommend this move to all my friends. The cinematography was beautiful, the graphics and special effects, spetacular. The storyline is a familar one but it did not detract from the quality of the movie. I saw it at an IMAX theater which is the only way to see it for the first time. The movie was well worth the time it took James Cameron to make it. It is amazing that our fellow human beings have such an imagination!!

This was my fourth time seeing Avatar. I've seen it twice in 3D and twice in 3D IMAX, and although I would love the movie even in 2D - I must say that seeing it in IMAX is an experience you will never forget. This movie is a masterpiece visually, a true feast for the eyes. It's beauty though is equally matched with a compelling story, one that has drama, love, hope, fear and all evokes all the feeling one wants to experience at the movies. It's well worth the price of a ticket and then some. It is by far the best movie I've ever seen. I drove an hour to see this in IMAX and I would do it again, hands down. Avatar is a movie for everyone, regardless of your gender, culture or age. Go see it, you won't regred it!

I've seen the movie twice now, and I must say.. People who take this movie as a personal attack; calling it anti-american, anti-military - They really miss out on the subtle undertones of the movie that (to me) human's capability for compassion & understanding in spite overwhelming urges towards greed, and numb indifference.We are only taught to hate and fear what we do not understand.
Not to spoil it for people who haven't seen the movie yet..many plot changing events occur after a display of humility or a selfless sacrifice. In short, this movie is stunning in both cinematography and message.

The cinematography in this movie is incredible! The storyline is pretty predictable ,but due to the superior acting and the visual effects it draws the viewer in. I've heard that James Cameron has had this movie in mind for some time and waited until the special effects technology was available to give it the life he envisioned. I think the time was right - it's spectacular!

James Cameron has created the ultimate anti-American flick. The Marines killing off indigenous people just to get "Unobtainium" for ruthless and greedy capitalists. Come On.
Having said that, the film was lavishly produced and wonderfully imaginative. IMax put the critters, great and small, right in your lap. If you can ignore the genuinely hateful politics and don't require much of a plot, this is a rollicking good time. You'll also have to suspend reality, as it doesn't make any sense at all.
