I took my girlfriend and her cousin to see this movie, and they both really enjoyed it (they are not particularly into sci-fi). JJ Abrams has really opened up the world of Star Trek to the not-as-nerdy with this film, and at the same time, has kept it just as interesting to the already-established loyal Trek fan base.
Anyone that says otherwise is just bitter that Star Trek /can/ be cool.

While the plot is a bit confusing due to some time travel stuff and an alternate reality, the young actors portarying the crew of the Enterprise are all excellent and there is a lot of action and great special effects. The 2 hours flew by. I highly recomend it.

Very fun, clever, and witty movie. Because it explored the origins of Captain Kirk and Spock and how their friendship began, I felt this to be the most interesting star trek movie that I have seen. It gave you a sense that you could understand the deep motivations of the characters and their behavior. Loved it.

With spot on casting, excellent special effects, non-stop action, and a clever plot device that allows the familiar characters to enter into some completely unexpected situations, J.J. Abrams has definitely rebooted the franchise.
That said, this was my first experience viewing a movie in IMAX format. The screen was really not so different from the regular screens at the same theatre. I doubt I'll spend the extra dollars to view another movie in IMAX.

While I did enjoy seeing some of the action sequences and shots of the ships in Imax, the close-ups of faces were way too large in Imax. I don't need to see a nostril that is six feet in diameter. See this one in normal movie format or wait for a DVD if you're like me and don't like the big giant heads.
As the story goes, I think this is very interesting reboot and I will be curious to see how they develop this story line in the next movie.

I am a Trekie. Have been since the first series. I had limited expectations and was EXTREMELY pleased with this film. Good story, good characters, fun use of old, well worn lines, enough newness to keep things interesting. My wife (a non-Trekie) even liked it. Good Saturday matinee. The IMAX was great and not too loud.

First the bad: There was some kid tie ins. (NOT JAR JAR BINKS BAD, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA) 1. I didn't agree with the young Kirk scene 2. The fat hands reaction was a little over the top 3. The place where Old meets Kirk - 4. The little alien that hangs out with Scotty
Now the good:
1. The feel of power and grandness. The whole movie makes you feel like Star Trek is amazingly huge. 2. The effects will BLOW YOU AWAY!!! Jumping scenes, warp scenes, coming out of warp in .... 3. This is a wildly entertaining movie whether you're a trekkie or not. But, not to give anything away, if I have to watch another Trek movie that's dependent upon TIME TRTAVEL again as a basic plot element, I'm finished with this series.
Abrams could have spent more time developing an interesting story line but instead felt the need to subject the audience to a ridiculous plot line.
This movie could have been an all-time classic, if only someone with great imagination were in control of the development and direction of this picture.

This movie I overall rate an A- the minus is only because there are so many opportunities for new stories I can't guess the next direction. Great pace, balanced action and characterization, good CGI, no over the top erotic scenes that toss out the feel of reality.
The characters were spot on but opened up new opportunities for even that. The villian felt real and not forced or unbelievable. The surprises were bang on and helped create the feel of new along with old but new! How is that for description.
Great for kids I took all of mine and a couple of grand kids. I saw it twice and at the end of both showings the audience was laughing and participating and at the end was clapping.
What more can a movie ask for?

I hadn't seen Star Trek for more than 10 years prior to the movie... I followed the whole thing easily and it was such a blast. Everyone in the crowd laughed really loud at the same parts and clapped at the end. The movie really went for grand effect on its audience, and did so pretty successfully. Due to all the great reviews I went into the movie with high expectations and a lot of curiosity. Expectations were met and curiosity rewarded. The movie had just the right amount of "old" stuff to reward longtime fans and 'new' stuff that made the story exciting. If you must compare it to previous Trek movies, It's like II 'Wrath of Khan' and IV 'Voyage Home' wrapped up in a very shiny new package with changes which make sense WHEN you see the movie. Saying too much ahead of time just spoils the movie. How can Kirk do this, how can....? Stop with the questions and see the movie! :)

This was an odd number movie in the trek movie chain which probably meant it was gonna be bad, but for someone who is not that experienced in Trek. Abrams pulled it off with Flying colors. He broke the Movie pattern Chain :) Very Nicely Done.
The movie was action packed form beginning to end. The Effects were Great. The story line was very enjoyable. The cast is great and Zachary Quinto is a perfect choice for the Young Spock character.
This will be a phenomenal Revival to an old franchise.
I saw the movie the second day of the release get there Early(at least an hour before showtime) for a mid-top section middle row seat, and Definitely see it in Imax.

They did a great job. I don't think there was any slow segments. Even knowing how the characters will and should act, they found a way to surprise us. There was one area of concern for me, but the movie experience was so enjoyable and that is what a movie is supposed to do "transport' you into a world where you can forget this one. They did an awesome job with this movie. I went with a couple non-Trek- fans, and even they came out saying the 2hr film felt short. It keeps you fully engrossed the entire time. There is plenty for the hardcore Trekie to reminisce about, but it also can serve as a new base for a whole new group of fans.

Star Trek has been my mother's milk, growing up. I was ready to be disappointed by this movie... and wasn't. I was thrilled. It's still "Trek," if faster and not as deep.
Still, just like Chekov's w's this movie suffers from hyperovercorrection. Old Trek movies have been (accurately) accused of slow pacing; the new Trek is much more frenetic (partly because of the presence of two bildungsromans) but the scene changes are so notably different that it's all memorable. The later series and movies had a tendency to treknobabble their way through problems; in this one, such is limited to "red matter," which is red and vaguely matterish but not described at all beyond the fact that it does Bad Stuff..
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Never had gone to an IMAX before, and this was definately the way to go! My husband is a Trek fan, and I have been, by default. I was worried about being disappointed, afraid I'd spend too much time thinking,"gee, shoulda done it this way, or they'd never do THAT" and that didn't happen even once. Casting was Spock-on, especially Spock - Sylar was the PERFECT choice. Storyline, action, plausability was terrific! If you can see it in IMAX, do so, if you can't, go anyway. You'll be glad you did. Oh, and for IMAX? Buy tickets ahead, no one got in that just came to the door. And get there early, and shoot for the middle.

Wow. A great movie, with a nearly perfect understanding of the original Star Trek world and characters, yet taking them all to another level. Having grown up with Star Trek, I came into the movie skeptical, and left in awe.
The kids loved it too, even thought they didn't grow up with Star Trek. The movie manages to stand on its own, though it has roots in a rich history.
It's a great movie to see in IMAX, if you have that option. I'll be going back.

Director J.J. Abrams proves that old dogs can learn new tricks. The plot and casting an homage to the original Star Trek series - without the preachiness or turgid acting. The special effects and cinematography are as good as anything you'll see in the modern big screen. The tone for the film is set with the rollicking opening scenes, with a story-line that will keep you on your mental toes throughout. Go see this before the word of mouth fills the theaters!

J.J. Abrams, the actors, and crew did a great job in bringing this together. Did it specifically follow the story line of the original? No! But then again, I don't think Mr. Roddenberry is rolling in his grave either. The story line was changed from the original, but when you mess with the space-time continuum, that is what you get. It was readily apparent the main actors studied the original characters to give the feeling this was really Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and especially Bones!!! The directing? The precision was there, the actors on cue, and Mr. Abrams' fingerprint was definitely on this story. Very little s3x, major action, good story line...My hope is that they will develop more great stories...I'll wait feverishly for the next movie.
