I agree with others on how its not like the typical holmes movie...Its better. Mystery, action and a little humor.Not a slow movie. The actors were great. Accept for a scene or two, you can watch with the whole family. Would see it again.

Not sure about the reasoning others gave to support only giving this 3 or fewer stars. For an action film, which is what this really is, it was superb. Don't expect a true-who-done-it of the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery genre. For those who are over-zealously loyal to the original ACD series...this might be too action packed and that's why the low ratings. I definitely prefer this version and am very intrigued at the prospect of future sequels. I thought the casting was excellent and will resoundingly concur w/ others who spoke of how well the chemistry worked between Downey and Law.

Entertaining with great visual effects. Story was mediocre -- not really a mystery movie. Good chemistry between main characters although Rachel McAdams seemed a little out of place.

Kudos to the Director, Guy Richie; to Jude Law, to Robert Downey, Jr, both brilliant in their roles. The sets/dark images perfect. The film a bit long at over 2 hours (especially in unheated theater in January), but I wouldn't mind seeing again in a more comfortable setting -- maybe I could discern the side comments and bon mot tag lines of the actors better 2nd time around.
I would wish for a little less "violent action", but at least there was no car chase!
All in all, an entertaining event!

Setting, costumes, special effects, acting all top notch. Holmes often spoke quickly and with the British accent, it was sometimes hard to understand. Plot a little contrived but typical of a Sherlock Holmes piece. All in all, a good show.

Great special effects will appeal to younger audience. Old traditional (Rathbone movies) will find movie too fast. I found the movie to be very interesting as I find all logic interesting. British accent was a bit hard to understand at times, but special effects made up for it. I would highly reccomend this movie for teen to middle age group of audience.

I saw this on Christmas Day with my wife and my parents. I expected a funny, action-packed adventure. What I got was a dull, dark, film whose actors didn't enunciate. It was mediocre. I would not recommend it.

The plot is good and holds your interest. Love the personalities assigned to Sherlock and Holmes. However, most of the best action scenes have already been shown in previews, that is a little disappointing.

PROS - decent performances; i was ok w/ re-envisioning SH as a younger, more brash persona than depicted in the novels; uhh..yeah, i guess that's it...
CONS - action scenes are good, but the interstices (the rest of the movie) are slow and plodding - checked my watch many times; plot - transparent and predictable = boring; score - really annoying.
SUM - it's really a 2 1/2 stars film, at best. wait for dvd or cable - that's where i'll be viewing the obviously intended sequel.

Sherlock Holmes this is not and Sir Arthur Connan Doyle must be turning over in his grave at this action reinterpretation of his far more intellectual classic, yet if you are willing to look at it as an action/mystery flick it works. Robert Downey Jr. carries the film (as usual) and Jude Law easily fits in as his sidekick. The wry wit and clever dialog almost force you to enjoy their uneasy partnership. In the end its just another buddy movie, but its fun.

Overall it was a very good movie experience. I thought the chemistry between Robt Downey Jr and Jude Law was quite good. I also enjoyed new aspects of characters you thought you knew everything about; this made it feel feel fresh and interesting. I liked the story line and thought it developed well. I did feel the climactic scene was a bit over the top but I guess in a big pic like this it's to be expected.

There's nothing game-changing about Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. is again playing himself, only this time as a 19th century Englishman. I actually had a bit of trouble understanding him- I'm not sure if it was the speed at which he spoke or his slight accent.
But the fighting was fun to watch, the humor is usually spot on, Jude Law provides a good Watson to Downey's Holmes and Mark Strong's performance is, as always... well, strong.
If you're only ambivalent about seeing it, be sure to rent it at least.

No its not the holmes you grew up with and yet the man we knew still comes through. Holmes has been given a more agresive tone to go along with his over logical mind. Watson was always a defenderd of sherlock but never had the confidance that the new character has in this film. The relationship between the two comes accross as a couple brothers out to get into more trouble than they should.
The story it self is an old one of magic verses science. For the sherlock fans you will find many great quotes and tibits from your favorite books, like the fact that holmes only refers to Addler as the woman. This is a fun and new look at an old classic I recomind you leave expectations at the door and enjoy the new holmes.
