Sherlock Holmes entertains and for its 134 minute runtime, doesnt drag on. However, i feel as if something was missing. An edge or an "umf". It had very creative elements such as the fighting. The chemistry between RDJ and Jude Law was great, but the movie as a whole just felt a little lacking. However this is definitely worth a watch in the the theaters.

Do not go to pacific theatres especially at the Grove, I purchased my ticket on line and arrived at the theatre 1 hour before the showtime. I stood in line inside to get my ticket, then another line outside to get into the theatre, then another line for popcorn and a drink. When I got into the theatre there was not 1 single seat that was not being saved. After getting 2 different managers involved the best solution was a refund and a trip home.

We are huge Sherlock fans, so were anxious to see this. Although in the movie there is violence from both Holmes and Watson that are not in their classic characters, the acting was such that it seemed fitting. Fortunately they kept in many details of Sherlocks detection skills and that helped to get you mind around the fact that they were different. And Irene Adler was really very good!
This is definitely a movie to see and be entertained by!

Not bad, but if you are a fan of the true Sherlock Holmes, you need to put this aside and take the movie on its own; this is not Doyle's Holmes, it is not even close. The somewhat campy treatment in the first half of the movie is a bit annoying, but Ritchie eventually puts this aside.

While some of my colleagues thought it was cheesy, I rather enjoyed it myself. In fact although I may be a nerd and am easily swayed by books and movies, it made me want to buy a top hat, smoke a pipe and become a private investigatore.

During the last 10 minutes of "Sherlock Holmes", when the great detective is doing his case summation, viewers are reminded of what has been missing throughout the rest of the film, and what has been replaced by CGI and an excessive number of Guy Ritchie's scenes of stylized, but basically pointless violence. So, what has been missing? It's no mystery. "Sherlock Holmes" IQ has dropped a few points due to excessive usage of steroids. One of my fellow viewers summed it up nicely, "A violent version of "Monk."

The movie had a slightly dark feel to it reminding me of Sweeney Todd in some of the wide shots of London. Lots of action, loud and in your face type of show. Robert Downey and Judd Law were a real pleasure to watch!!

I like this action movie. It had terrific scenes, especially the realistic 19th century setting. I liked all the characters in the movie and would like to go to a sequal to the first movie.

Tnis is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Just total confusion form start to finish, difficutl to understand he dialect due to how fast they spoke. Just slow and boring;. They have set it up for a sequel, I won't waste my time or money.

Finally! What an enjoyable movie! It stayed true to original story and movies past about Holmes and Watson. Adding excellent cgi and narrative from Downey pulling you into the technical aspect of the following scene. Great directing from Guy Ritchie! So refreshing to see an intelligent film without all of the over done urban slang ,attitude, and B.S. we have to put up with on a daily basis from T.V. and cable!

Expect lots of explosions, murder, mayhem, and mumbling. Americans find English accents to be difficult to wade thru when spoken cleanly, but quickly spoken and mumbled speech takes away from what was a witty, fun action adventure.
Take the legendary literary character of Holmes, add in Batman and a bit of Tom & Jerry, and you've got this movie.
It's perfectly OK to bring kids (10 & up) to. There's no drastic violence, no nudity stuff, and the fights are well staged.

Jeremy Brett was the perfect Sherlock Holmes in years past and I missed his reserve in this film. But reserve is not a Guy Ritchie attribute. That said, the bromance between Holmes and Watson was cute, and the women were good foils for the men. I am a chemist, so the science is important, and exaggerated in this film. Shakespeare in Romeo & Juliet relied on a death potion for Juliet, but that was 400 years ago. So I thought the plot was weak. Was the movie entertaining? Yes. The special effect crews earned their money. But all in all I would rate the film a bit more than average, 3-1/3 stars.

Evidently, Mr. Ritchie and his team never heard of the term "less is more". This movie's solid story and strong actors were overshaddowed by special effects, overblown sound track, slow pacing (actually put me to sleep), and needless banter. Lost were the subtlety and cleverness of a well-told Sherlock Holmes mystery. Not only did Guy Ritchie kill Mr. Doyle, he showed a complete lack of respect to the intellectual capability of his audience in the process.

As a fan of the Doyle series, this movie was a bit over the top. However, Downey was fantastic. Law and McAdams were so-so (she needs to work on her accent). I loved the way Holmes' was able to allow us to hear his thoughtsof deduction in slow motion, and it then was replayed at regular speed. The sets, costumes and ambiance were very time specific. Although slow in spots, Overall, the movie was very enjoyable. Expecting a sequel.

This had all the makings of a great movie. Extraordinary production values...wonderful set design, costumes, outstanding acting, intricate plot, attractive and interesting characters. I simply got lost in all of the fighting. These people went at each other with feet and fists, guns, knives, axes, hatchets, hammers, explosives, chain saws and probably a few things I can't remember. Rather than spicing up the film, the violence weighed it down

I like Robert Downey Jr. and was looking forward to his take on the character of Sherlock Holmes. He did a fine job, however the movie was incredible slow during the first half. It just plodded along to the point where I started wondering what time it was. It's not necessary to have it packed from start to finish with special effects but the story needs to pull the viewer in and this one did not. A good rental I would say, but not worth the price of a theater admission. Since they clearly left the door open for future sequels with the introduction of Prof. Moriarty let's hope they pull it together going forward.

Well paced, gorgeously filmed, mystery-action-adventure with a deft, comic touch. Downey is a brooding, physical Holmes (think Daniel Craig's Bond), but also a selfish, petulant nerd (think of Gregory House). The plot is silly, but that's ok: this is just for amusement, and never drags.
Nothing to shock the kids, especially tweens and up. Younger kids would likely need too much explanation.
One leaves the theater hoping for a sequel (or prequel).

excellent, fun, entertaining, engaging, thoughful, entergetic,funny, I will have to see again to catch all of the lines. Downey and Law had a good play off each other. The characters are well developed. Anyone who has an interest in Holmes should be interested in seeing another portrayal of the famous dectective.

I liked the movie overall, but there were many times where the accents made it difficult to follow what was being said. That and the couple of times where Holmes rapidly went through the facts/clues to figure something out, I felt like most of those were not explained to any extent. So, the view had no chance of figuring any of these things out whatsoever. Either way though, I thought it was certainly worth watching and the scenery was fantastic. I expect that I'll be up for seeing the sequal (which it clearly is set up for)...

Faithful enough to the original ACD characters for an updated version--except for Dr. Watson--.
RD,Jr. outshines the rest of the cast ( as usual), the period sets are lush and striking, and Guy Ritchie's direction is spot on! Exciting, suspensful....everything works!

Found the movie to be quite enjoyable, an interesting and engaging take on the sherlock holmes character and story line.
