Stylized chaos at the expense of a developed story

A Guy Ritchie fan realizes coming into one of his films that chaos is to be expected, However, the methods that earned him his scruples worked against him in Sherlock Holmes. When Holmes' mind is so deductive that he measures every movement in a fight in the millisecond before it happens, one would appreciate the director taking the same care with the plot and character development. There was not enough storyline for Downey and McAdams' characters to give the audience a perception of something being "on the line," and the bromance between Law and Downey took away from where the focus should have lied--in the inner workings of a genius' mind.

I was so excited to see this movie. RDJ and Jude Law, how could you miss? Well, you get Guy Ritchie to direct it, that's how. I'm going to repeat what many others have said. It was very difficult to hear/understand what they were saying. I felt I missed over half of the plot lines simply because I had no idea what they just said. It doesn't wrap up well either. I had very intelligent people with me...all kind of scratching their head and wondering what just happened. My husband was asleep for most of it..... I really hate giving bad reviews for actors I like so much, but this was just not a good movie.

From the beginning of the movie, the dialogue was difficult to pick up. While both actors carry a passable English accent, it was hard to hear the words. the movie was too long and frankly not that exciting. Ending is set up for a sequel (that I won't have any interest in!)

This is a very very fun movie with a very weak plot. That and the fight scenes are typical Hollywood - way too long and incredibly unrealistic - no human body can take that much punishment day after day.
Leaving this aside, this is a very fun movie - if you don't mind that they've reduce Arthur Conan Doyle to George Lucas' level.

Musical score, visual settings and cinematography were excellent. Pace of the movie was perfect. A very realistic mystery based upon the scientific advances of the time.
Actors and actresses gave excellent performances. Costumes, facial expressions, and dialog were top rate. Playful banter between Holmes and Watson was a welcome change from the staunch, professional relationship of past Sherlock Holmes performances.
The female characters were gorgeous in terms of their physical beauty, their costumes, and the way they carried themselves. They also possessed great intelligence, wittiness, strong will, and a bit of sassiness.
The male characters were handsome, physically fit, intelligent, and projected humorous moments of frailties.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

How many contrived fight scenes and phony computer generated backgrounds should one be subjected to? Perhaps I shouldn't have been expecting something different given the trailers but I was, thus my disappointment. However, Jude Law was an excellent Watson and RDjr does well as a twitchy, socially misfit version of Holmes. The rest of the cast was ordinary at best.

I know Guy Ritchie is appealing to the largest demographic (13-26 year-olds), but this movie is too heavy on the fight scenes & explosions. I liked the slow mo scene in the beginning where Sherlock analyzes what his blows will accomplish, but it's repeated almost exactly in the boxing ring! I loved the scene in the restaurant where Sherlock is waiting for Dr. Watson and Mary: he's absorbing all of the sounds and it is almost too much for his analytic brain. The look of this film is so gritty, but the set decorations and costumes add a lot to the feel of Victorian times. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are excellent in their roles, and even though their banter is somewhat mumbled . . . it is very entertaining!

Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. show how versatile they are as actors. From the boxing scene where Holmes incapacitates his opponent in a few moves after first calculating his moves to the woman that Watson intends to marry. Oh and Rachel McAdams continues to show us why we will never forget her name or her face, a truly beautiful woman that we need to see more movies with her.

The camaraderie was incredible. I loved it. I will buy this movie and would definitely see it again when the hype has let down. The theater was very crowded, sitting in the front row was a bummer. But the movie was great! Crushing on Downey.

An absolute must see!
Interplay between the Holmes and Watson characters adds a layer of depth and entertainment rarely achieved in movies today. Employing today's technology to preview and review Sherlock's thought processes was an ingenious and entertaining move. The beloved characters came to life as never before on screen and I must say I like these characters better. I am certainly looking forward to more Holmes and Watson adventures!

Robert Downey Jr has again pulled off a great role here. I have not always been a fan of his but I have enjoyed his roles here and as Ironman (preview of IM2 before Sherlock was also very good).
Jude Law was a more adventuresome Watson and was painted as a great foil for Holmes.
The storyline is uncomplicated and the action sequences were rollicking and fun. A very enjoyable piece of escapsim that even most Sherlockians would enjoy.

My mother in law, who loves every movie made for Lifetime or Oxygen, and whom has a Steven Seagal Fan Club Card was literally snoring during this movie. I had to shake her to wake her up.
Maybe it was because I had seen 3 or 4 different trailers, each several times, but I just felt Sherlock Holmes was boring. There was way to much dialog, and it was hard to understand. The fast pace of the move didn't help speed up the 2 hour something long flop.
Every bit of action that was in this movie was in the trailers. No surprises... The story itself was witty and I will give good credit to it, but I wouldn't waste your time.

I found this movie to be very " far-fetched". I do not know who wrote the piece, but it is not the typical Sherlock Holmes I remember. It was very difficult to understand what Jude Law was saying, as well as, Robert Downey, Jr. When they do not speak loud enough or are not facing the camera, it makes the dialog difficult to hear. Maybe Guy Ritchie should think about that the next time he makes a movie. Review it first! Also, the first half was very boring and I found myself falling asleep. I would not recommend it to my friends. Wait for the DVD to come out if you really want to see it. Also, I would not see the sequel if one is made! Very disappointed!

Growing up my father loved Sherlock Homes so I have experienced other adaptations of him. I love how the movie got in Sherlock's head more and showed his thinking process. Jude Law was a great as Watson. The natural friendship chemistry between Downey Jr and Law makes the story even more believable. I love how they choose a subject which would complicate them from solving the story b/c it wasn't logic based. The production value was great. The entire cast did a great job. The music, Hans Zimmer, worked so well with story.

Holmes enthusiasts won't recognize Sherlock in the current movie; Watson either, for that matter. Both are younger and hipper than we would expect. If you are willing to accept new images of these two, you should enjoy the movie. Downey and Law are both fine in their roles. Downey, in fact, is terrific, plus Rachel McAdams is fine to look at. The story is, I think, much too fanciful--a kind of 19th c. science fiction, but fun nevertheless. The cinematology is great; I loved the dark 19th c. London. Even if you don't buy this new take on the famous detective, you will enjoy watching the movie. So go.

Everyone really enjoyed it. Who knew you could make an action hero from the usually docile Sherlock Holmes? It actually comes off well. Watson is not portrayed as the stout, monocle-wearing, handle-bar mustached character perceived in the Doyle classics. Sound is gripping, special effects vis-a-vis nineteenth century London are well done. I would recommend this to anyone seeking an evening out. I'd bring the kids if you like, but, I have to say it helps to be at least familiar with Holmes and the "scientific deduction" skills from the original stories. It's all nicely done. AND, they even squeeze in a little Professor Moriarty at the end. Oh, and clearly the option is there for a sequel, all laid out for you at the end. I'd be there!

Very enjoyable -- a great "popcorn movie". Fast, witty, smart, funny. Although the plot was a bit dumb, the fab actors and the great dialogue more than made up for it. Ritchie could've trimmed the fight scenes a bit to tighten it up. Highly recommended unless you're a really picky, diehard Holmes lit fan.

Overall, this is an enjoyable film. The acting was excellent but the accents were difficult to understand at times. The camera work was annoying at first. I would have also liked to see more of Holmes' brilliance and attention to detail throughout the movie and less of his eccentricities.

Enjoyable. Downey's Holmes is entertaining. Law's version of Watson seem's to deviate the most from the bumbling sidekick in the Basil Rathbone portrayals. But overall a nice entertaining movie.

While the actors (especially Robert Downey, Jr.) did an excellent job, they were unable to rescue this plot- and CGI-heavy movie. The writers seemed obliged to pay homage to the fictional reputation of Sherlock Holmes by convoluting the plot as much as possible to give him something clever to solve and then having him tell you how he did it. This was interesting once, but when repeated ad nauseum, it left the audience (me) with nothing to do and I quickly grew bored.
The CGI reminded me of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and produced a backdrop that was for too clean and thereby, unreal.
A good effort, but way too talky.

Sherlock Holmes delivers on splendid acting by Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law, without whom the movie would be a sequence of fight scenes that depict an interesting (if dark) English industrial aesthetic without offering much in the way of plot. There are certain qualities, such as the deconstruction of Holmes' attention to detail that are really enjoyable, but the sequel needs more brain and less brawn to entice me.
