Very entertaining movie with top-notch performances by Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law.
Admittedly, the main storyline is one that's overdone; but IMO the movie was more about the character stories, relationship and building a solid base for future sequels.
Sherlock Homes is well worth the ticket price and a perfect movie to watch to get you out of the winter blahs.

I took my two sons to this movie and was not disappointed. Guy Richie directed another hit with his unique cinematography and period realism. I am looking forward to the sequel.

More Guy Richie than Arthur Conan Doyle. Be forewarned: This film has nothing whatsoever to do with the literary characters. It's interesting to look at - the art direction and FX are well done. Downey is always fun to watch, though he mumbles a lot of his lines, typically the exposition that would be nice to understand. No chemistry with Rachel McAdams. Zip. None. Holmes seems more bent toward Watson in this version.

Great actors, great period piece. Long time to develop a plot which then quickly ended. The love interests added little to the character interplay. The character interplay fell sort of Sir A.C.D.
If it is a rainy, snowy cold overcast day, this would be a decent bit of entertainment. The best reason to see this one is so that you are not forced to by the DVD or Blue Ray.

The movie was action packed and kept me interested the entire time. The cast was excellent and Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law looked like they had been "best friends" for life, just like Watson and Holmes would have been. Guy Ritchie did a great job directing this thriller. I look forward to a sequel.

Definitely not your father's Sherlock Holmes. Very slim resemblance to anyone's SH. Creative new character, but disappointing to this somewhat SH purist. To me, using SH name was a marketing ploy.

To put it in Holmes' words..."The game's afoot!" It is great to see Guy Ritchie's retelling of the Holmes tale! I felt like we were seeing Old England and getting a real glimpse into the Bromance relationship that existed between Holmes and Watson! I hope we will get to see more Holmes in the future!

A bit over hyped; good action flick but plot very contrived. Would have been nice for a Holmes movie if there was a bit more intrigue and logic in the plot and dialgoue, kind of what you'd expect from an Agathie Christie "who dunn it" flick. This was more just fun action than mystery\suspense. Fun though.

I thought that Sherlock Holmes was a fun movie. Kept my interest throughout (although it was just a tad long). The dialog was witty and humorous. The caper was complicated enough and not presented in too complicated a manner, nor was it spoon fed. Well done. Action, intrigue, historical setting (albeit completely fictional characters and capers).... see it, you'll have fun.

We saw this movie opening day with our 13 and 14-y-old children. Since I hadn't seen a preview, I was surprised to find out that 95% of the movie focused on black magic. It made me very uncomfortable to the point that I thought about leaving. I was disappointed that I did not know this ahead of time; I wouldn't have subjected my children to the film.

Saw this the day it opened with my wife and brother. My wife's idea, I wasn't too crazy to go because I'm not a Robert Downey Jr fan, plus I had seen a review noting that Sherlock Holmes films that try to add a modern twist seldom work. So I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed the quirkily modern portrayal of Sherlock's personality in authentic period settings with a good script. Surprised because Downey's portrayal was so different from either Basil Rathbone's or Jeremy Brett's, and I thought they set the standard for the role. Although the run time was a bit over two hours, the time passed very quickly for me. We were all tired, and my brother can doze off most anywhere, but this held his attention every minute, as it did mine.

A film that left you wondering, I can't give a full review without giving away details of the film, so I'll keep it short. The acting was good, not always a fan of Jude Law, but he was good in this film, and the chemistry between all of the actors was superb. Please go see this winter classic.

I had high expectation after seeing the trailer and was one of the first to see it on Christmas day. But it turned out somewhat disappointed. The main line of the story is not sufficiently well designed. I would say it is not a good choice by itself at theaters unless you want another chance to see Downey, Law, or McAdams...

My daughter, a friend, and I went to see this latest release of Sherlock Holmes movie in Santa Rosa, Ca. 12-25-2009. Well Ill tell you up front that I am an avid Holmes fan and have been for many years. In the early sixty's and seventy's I would catch every S. Holmes I could.
Much to my surprise my daughter is a fan as well, we truly enjoyed the movie that was a comedy slash mystery type of film. I walked out of the theater with a smile on my face and feeling fortunate that we could afford to go to a movie on Christmas day and spend some quality time together!

It is not an easy task to reinvent a 19th century superhero but this movies does a great job. Witty, intelligent, energetic and fun are some things that spring to mind. It reinterprets Holmes but still is true to the essence of the character. The chemistry between Holmes and Watson is the best part. This is a wondersul period piece that should please everyone. Great winter fare.

Disappointing movie. The concept of combining an action film with Sherlock Holmes is an innovative twist. The execution never matches the concept. The film veers and careens through a series of adventures within a film like a child with attention deficit disorder. The romances of both Watson and Holmes are less than believable. In spite of the action, it drags in the middle. I found myself about 3/4 through wondering when the ordeal would be over. Never a good sign for an action film.

This was probably one of the most satanic movies ever created. I went in tried to endure an hour and had to walk out. I wish i had left when the human sacrifice attempt took place at the beginning of the movie. This sucks. I wish they would stop making movies like this or show the satanic backgrounds on the previews. I got my refund and walked out of there.

Sherlock Holmes as a movie is not one that I would advise rushing out to go see. It was a good film, but not necessarily worth going out on opening night as I did to watch though. The advertising for this movie was terrific, but the movie itself was lacking. Robert Downey Jr. was great, very believable as Sherlock.

Robert Downey Jr. breathes life, once again, into a cherished fictional character. May be Guy Ritchie's best effort yet as he updates the master sleuth and puts him on display with all of his idiosyncrasies in full view - neurotic insecurities & obsessions ... as well as his unmatched eye for detail & deduction. Ritchie has woven an action tale that keeps us riveted on the story, Holmes himself and the complex world he lives in. The film is not a literal homage to Sherlock Holmes as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as much as it is an updated Holmes infused with Ritchie's stylings & grounded in a detailed, fascinating look at the world of late 19th century England. Bloody well done!
