I've read the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novels and have watched the old Sherlock movies that pretty much followed the late author's work. This is a version in and of itself. Ritchie's version of the Holmes character makes the detective a brilliant but flawed individual. Makes Holmes more human than a superstar. If anybody could pull of the character's flaws, Downey would be the man. Downey's portrayal of Holmes was terrific. I sometimes forget this is the same individual who played bit parts like in Dangerfield's "Back to School".

Because I've actually read all the books several times and knowing that this was based upon a graphic novel, I was prepared to be offended. But though this Holmes and Watson are not the literary ones, the writers obviously know the source they're drawing from. Holmes is almost too eccentric and low-life and has what I call the Aragorn Syndrome-I kept wanting him to pause and take a bath and wash his hair. Watson is much more an equal partner with Holmes than his literary counterpart and they're both up for a good fight.
I really liked the art direction-London was just as filthy and sooty and it should have been. And I enjoyed the unique places they chose to do the action in-a shipyard and slaughterhouse among others.

I have read all the books, and I know you can't judge the movies from the original standard, but all the same - if you HADNT read the books, you would have been lost with all the references to things you didn't know about. In a stand alone review, it was a great flick, really enjoyed seeing it - the cast, the sets, the music was awesome.

The cinematography was outstanding, special effects, stupendous! Jude Law was the best supporting Dr. Watson "SH" could ever want.

The production was dazzling. So were the sets and costumes. Robert and Jude had fun doing this movie. The movie, however, needing tighter editing. We were a little restless at times swinging between dialogue and action scenes. It was a huge, beautiful, creative production design, but somewhat overwhelming at times. Downey was precocious in his acting. This is a 21st Century Sherlock.

A very nice take on the "Sherlock Holmes" idea, since the last version of it that I remember seeing was "Young Sherlock Holmes" when I was little. The accents were held well, especially by Robert Downey Jr., to the point in the beginning where it was hard to follow at first. The dialogue was well done, very witty, and very good. The action scenes were well done, and the Protagonists' portrayal as semi-flawed characters was a nice touch, making them seem just that bit more human (for the screen, anyways). I'm looking forward to the next one.

A very enjoyable, action-packed film. Downey is excellent, as always, and Jude Law, who had not impressed me previously, seems up to the challenge. Not a particularly deep plot, but the good guys win and the bad guys lose and, after all, isn't that reassuring?

The Previews looked great and I couldn't wait too see the movie but I was very disappointed. It was missing a good plot. The movie was a great buddy flick. RDJ and Jude Law were very good with their dialogue. Rachel McAdams was fantastic as the criminal love-interest for RDJ that he couldn't outsmart. The set pieces for Victorian England were beautiful and were utilized for the movie instead of being just a backdrop. The story was a bit forgettable but the big reveal at the end I thought was ingenious. They did set up the sequel and it was a bit obvious if you are remotely familiar with the Sherlock Holmes mythology.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are strong characters playing up the serious and "tongue-in-cheek" moments, but the action bounces all around. It tries to help by sometimes "pre-showing" what going to happen and sometimes "re-running" what has happened, but it all ends up somewhat convoluted. Loose plot with sporadic direction kept me from caring about the outcome. On the other hand, my husband and daughters all enjoyed the movie.

I was hesitant about seeing this because of the mainly negative critical reviews. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. I thought the acting, especially by RDJ was amazing (as usual). Jude Law was a great balance to RDJ's Sherlock. The costumes and set pieces were so well done and the directing by Guy Ritchie (especially the bare knuckle fight scenes) were very cool. My only complaint was I thought they could have developed Irene Adler's character (Rachel McAdams) better and the movie could have been 30 minutes shorter. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this movie!

It was OK. I thought it would be much better than it actually was. There are a lot of action sequences that help keep the movie "moving". There were many opportunities to delve down into and expand plot line - to really bring out the mysteries and lore that surrounds the central idea - but that was completely overlooked.
Like i said, if a storm is passing through, this is a good way to stay warm and dry, otherwise, wait for the DVD - much cheaper!

Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. has awesome chemistry in this movie - it was fast paced and exciting. A real joy! Loved it!

A movie with a terrific build up in the theaters and on TV but disappointing to see. Some part are very well done while others dragged. I would not consider it to be one of the years best.

A nice return to the original spirit of Sherlock Holmes - even if targeted to a 21st century audience. Downey is terrific as the brilliant and bohemian Holmes. The chemistry between Downey and Law is spot on. The only disappointment was the Adler character, both how it was written and performed.

RDJ and Jude Law put in fine performances, great action and effects, I can see how the director's style would be off putting to some but it is a Guy Ritchie film.
Overall, a great popcorn flick!
