Robert Downey Jr. was brilliant. His physical sense of comedy and his innate sense of timing make this man a legend. Jude Law was good not great. Probably miscast or simply misinterpreted by the director, A love interest was great idea, and Rachel McAdams was decent but either miscast, misdirected or over-edited. The double crossing female role was better played by a Jodie Foster in Maverick. The sets were incredible and the closing graphics were remarkable. Net-net a fabulous movie carried by Downey Jr and fabulous sets and stunt doubles.

This Sherlock and Watson are very different than the originals (played by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce) but are just as pleasing to watch as the original players were. Robert Downey Jr again does a super job as Sherlock - he is exciting, romantic, adventuresome, a fighter and superb detective. Sir Arthur Conan Doyles character has been one of my favorites since I was child (60 years ago) and this modern day adventure of the past continues to strengthen my love of this person. Jude Law - a slimmer and more dynamic Doctor Watson than Nigel Bruce's character also adds to the overall fun of this movie. A special and thrilling movie to see. A good show and I look forward to the sequel with great anticipation.

Actors were excellent, especially Robert Downey Jr. His portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was as quirkie as Johnny Depp's charcter in Pirates of the Carribean. The sets were awesome too. I highly recommend.

Although I am not a fan of Guy Richie, this movie was outstanding, the team of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law was incredible. I would highly reccomend this movie to anyone and everyone.

This movie wasn't at all what I was expecting until near the end. I'm used to the British Sherlock Holmes where it's more of the mystery and mental game instead of physical violence. This American version had a LOT of fighting in it - I guess to please American audiences that are used to more physical violence and less mental aptitude.

Movie was fun and packed with action. With all the jumpy twists and turns, it was hard to focus. Perhaps it was meant to be that way so that the only one thinking clearly was Sherlock Holmes!

Well, I didn't read much Sherlock Holmes novels growing up as a kid so I didn't really have any expectations. However, Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law played their roles pretty well. Even some fight scenes that UFC fans would enjoy.
Would definately see this movie again.

Saw it twice with two different friends...and each of us were verifiably enterntained. Shows the practical inductive reasoning of Holmes, while breaking out from the stoggey and frail English image established by Basil Rathbone. Excellent prospects for a new franchise and a wonderful return to his BEST style of acting....Robert Downey, Jr.

Having grown up on the Sherlock Holmes Phenom, I would NOT refer anyone to see this movie. I L-O-V-E Robert Downey, Jr. but would have to say this is the biggest SNOOZER of 2009!!! Bob's quippish lines and outstanding acting ability could not pull this STINKER of a movie out of the toilet. Lines were dropped, the plot was tired and somewhat confusing, and the best moments were definitely completely covered in the trailers. I could have saved myself $16 PLUS the price of popcorn and drinks had I just left it at trailer enjoyment from the last movie I went to see (Avatar, by the way... kick butt film)... To sum this up... Sherlock Holmes? Three words... DON'T DO IT!

My husband and I both enjoyed this movie. The editing kept the pace moving and I enjoyed seeing previous scenes in fast "flashback" mode. Downey, Law and McAdams are quite capable in their roles and their "devilish good fun" kind of attitude came through nicely. Charming and fun. The relationship between Watson and Holmes reminded me quite a lot of House and Wilson"s (TV show "House). So if you enjoy that element of "House", you'll enjoy the brotherly/challenge/comraderie in this one.

This was a fun movie that carried through the plot consistently and tied all the pieces together. it was a great remake of a classic genre but updated by the acting. Downey as Sherlock Holmes was great.

A perfect mix of humor, mystery, romance, action, and above all a 'buddy flick'. The new twist on Holmes as a scrappy action hero as well as a little bit nutsy genius is a most welcome invention. While I agree with some of the other reviewers about the mumbled dialog being hard to understand, I was thoroughly entertained, and can hardly wait for the sequels which are written all over the ending....

The plot was somewhat interesting, although it kept me waiting for something better all the time. Action is good, but a little bit fantastic. The worst thing was the darkness in the movie. I understand the period when it was set, but I felt like watching a black and white film in some scenes. Overall, it was o.k.. The actors were magnificent.

My husband is a "Sherlockian," but I have never read a Sherlock Holmes book. However, I know a lot about the detective (through osmosis). This movie had nothing to do with the sleuth I know about. It was a cross between Indiana Jones and Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. It was strictly an "action" film. Our family attended the film - 2 seniors & 2 adults, & we all hated it. 2 thumbs down!

If you're a fan of Holmes you will see some disparity, but the spirit was there and made for an amazing reboot of the stories. All the characters were fairly true to Doyle's writings and while Downey Jr. certainly didn't match the illustration of Holmes, he presented the character extremely well. Law did a great job as Watson, who was properly presented in this movie as a younger man instead of being a slow old man as is usually the case. They managed to work in the character of Irene Adler very well to, so fans of the books will be happy to see her faithfully reproduced. Overall it was amazing, especially if you give it the credit of being a reinterpretation instead of a re-enactment of the stories.

It was a fun movie. Not a blockbuster. Story line was hard to keep up with. The editing was a little weird (i.e, Holmes is handcuffed to the bed, and then he's not, no word on how he got out).

If you are expecting a fabulous blockbuster of a film, and have been looking forward to it for weeks, you will be sorely disappointed. Judging from the hype and the lines to get in, this movie should have been great. It sucked so bad it hurt. Americans should not try English accents (nor should Englishmen try Southern accents, but that was same star, different movie). Not only that, it just tried too hard to be funny and witty, and failed miserably. It was painful to watch, and my wife and I finally left.
