Maybe it's a cultural difference thing but this movie seemed to lag and drag. The plot was actually very simplistic, kind of a mixture of "Oliver", "The Quiz Show" and "West Side Story" set in India. Freida Pinto is gorgeous, no doubt, and the actors were good but how did this movie win 7 oscars? Maybe worth one or two but the academy lost some credibility with me on this one. Mostly depressing movie with a nice little happy ending, not terrrible but not great, hovering somewhere inbetween. The dancing at the end was good.

I have to say that this was probably one of the best movies I've seen. Its a very touching story that felt like you were watching the lives of two real brothers struggling to survive in a poverty stricken environment. Its also a great love story. everyone should see this atleast once!

I didn't realize that people actually lived like that in India...My niece is married to a man from India and when I saw this movie I understood more of the things he had described to me before...It was a very touching realization of how children are used in not only India but in our own country as well...I really enjoyed this movie and the ending was great.

Sorry, but they didn't win my sympathy. They are not what this movie portrayed. .
1) Ask any of us hard working Americans whose jobs have either been eliminated to outsourcing or work with those brought here from India. There is a very different backstory.
2) With so many people, they have the power (as so many countries including the USA have done) to exile the corrupt gov't.
3) Using the children to pull at our heartstrings to feel sorry for them didn't work either. No matter how poor a person is, there is simply no excuse to live in filth.
I've produced 2 Off-Broadway shows back in the '80's, this movie wouldn't make it to my stage.

This movie is set in India, Mumbai. It gives a thought provoking looks at how life is in the slums, but also triumphs because the boy who grew up there was able to use each "bad" experience to answer the questions on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Great acting and also a boy who grows into a man still in love with the slum girl he met. Through it all he keeps a tender heart towards her. Excellent!

I loved it thru and thru! Great character study plus the moving storyline and adorable actors. To me, it was a story about children; their struggles, sorrows, joys, hopes, & the psychological challenges that come with being orphaned & trying to survive (plus a love story intertwined). I don't understad how the genre of this movie would be labeled "comedy." It definitely was not a comedy although there were light moments in the movie.
I will be seeing it again plus getting the dvd.

Until it got Oscar attention we really werent that interested because the title was not enticing. Some reviews talk about violence,but nothing even as graphic as you see on tv. We have to look at that violence.I am sensitive to horrid things happening to little helpless children..but we can help only if we educate ourselves. We loved the movie and through the great acting of Dev and Madhur, Freida hope will be sent out and through the inspiration of this story,life will get better. Overall, I liked this movie, but the story was somewhat disjointed. The frequent and numerous flashbacks seemed to make the movie seem rather slow-moving in the beginning. The need to set up the back story of the main character was the cause of this storytelling method. I thought that the cinematography was quite good. Several of the other viewers accompanying me were somewhat unsettled by the level of graphic violence in the movie, particularly in some of the early scenes. Considering the low budget of this movie and the the fact that many of the actors were inexperienced, I felt that the movie was quite remarkable. It won't end up on my all time favorites list, but I'm glad that I went to see it.

I was so incredibly impressed and touched by this movie!!! It was incredibly well done and REAL!!! That is what the slums in these third world countries are really like... we choose not see or believe it but that is their reality and I think it is important for the world to be aware of the dire conditions that these people live in daily even if it wrapped around a romantic love story that makes it easier for Americans to watch and hopefully empathize and be moved enough to somehow, somewhere down the line reach out and help in someway! Frieda is beautiful and you can't take your eyes off of her... the characters young and old suck you in and keep you intrigued throughout the movie. Exceptional movie!!!

This movie to me was definitely not a comedy. I did not find anything funny about it. Can't believe it got best picture, but since I am definitely in the minority apparently I have missed something.

Taugh, sad and real. So well acted and directed that even knowing the end was a happy one I was affraid of what would happen with Jamal in more than one scene. The little kids were superb! One of the best movies ever!

There is just one word to describe this movie...Fantastic! I just wish I knew how to say that word in every language. This is definitely we will be purchasing when it comes out on DVD.
