This film is sometimes hard to watch because of the abject poverty and abuse heaped upon many of the characters. However, the film is well directed and beautifully acted with the actors playing their parts in an understated way. Dev Patel is convincing as a quiet, even suppressed, contestant of “Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?” from the slums of Mumbai. Arrested for suspicion of cheating when he gets to the final question, he recounts each life experience to the chief of police explaining how he knew the answers to each question. In essence, a love story between the male lead, Jamal, and the girl he’s known since childhood, it is a remarkable story of commitment and perseverance in the face of almost insurmountable odds. Excellent film.

I thought the scenery was great and the way the people live was interesting. I thought it was dragged out a lot though and at times boring. The plot how was how was he able to know the answers to the questions. They thought he had cheated. I think it could have been set up much better.

I saw this movie the first weekend it came out, and I loved it. But there were basically no people in the theater. I went back to see it yesterday, and my theater was almost completely full. I am proud to say that I discovered this movie before everyone else who is jumping on the bandwagon as it trucks through awards season.

I absolutely loved the movie. It was an interesting way to present the movie, starting pretty much at the end and explaining how things got to where they are. The characters were well developed and the acting was superb. It's a fully developed story that will have your heart full and your sense of justice challenged but intact by the end of the movie. This was by far the best movie I have ever seen. It actually had substance. It dealt with issues that everyone can relate to. The love story was the most beautiful I have ever seen. The child abuse that takes place in India made the movie sad but it was accurate. Danny Boyle did a superb job of representing India as well as the sites and the culture. I think about this movie practically every day. I love the whole destiny vs luck notion. It makes me question a lot of things. I will definitely be buying this film when it comes out on DVD. This movie just makes you feel good & helps you escape. Now if only all movies could be like this...

After hearing many great reviews from my friends, I went to see this movie with my mom. This score really makes you see how intense a struggle that a slumdog from Mumbai can go through. The cinematography gives an impressive view of the magnificence of India (really makes you want to visit such a beautiful country). The combination of the unbelievable love story struggle to the amazing musical composition gave me chills throughout the movie. I just love it when a movie gives me such a positive and great feeling inside! Well deserved Oscar Nomination for Best Picture!

True love conquers all. This sweeping well-crafted fairy tale of modern-day India has lots to offer. Fine acting, a fast moving story line, fine cinematography and music.
I'm not sure it's truly Oscar-caliber, but certainly worth seeing, and better than most of the output we get from Hollywood. If I could have, I would have chosen 4-1/2 stars, but 5 would be a stretch.
Shot on location in India, the scenes depicting the rough life, poverty and squalor of Mumbai are not for the sqeamish, but I suspect are fairly realistic.

This was a really wonderfully done tale of enduring love and hope. It is depressing, and delightful at the same time. The child actors were so great and the leads captivating. While the story is quite sad and the move depicts a few very brutal scenes, it exemplifies what life is on other countries (and perhaps not much unlike our own in some cities). The combination of harsh reality, culture, comedy, romance, and action, makes this move one to watch and a keeper.

I found this film visually and emotionally stunning. My girlfriend, however , felt the violence and feel good ending too contrasting. We had quite a discussion but in the end saw it as expressing the triumph of the human spirit against all odds even if it required a suspension of reality. Isn't that what some movies do?

Fast-paced, great editing, amazing directing, and unbelievably great acting. This movie delivers the big-bad-wolf reality of a documentary in the sheep's clothing of the story of an unlikely hero that we have no choice but to adore. It's a good thing this movie has a happy ending, because the development is brutally realistic regarding the truly vomit-inducing ugliness of poverty that is all too common in 21st century third world countries. I think the most valuable aspect of the film will prove to be raising the consciousness of many in the world who live in relative comfort. I thought this was the most important, powerful movie in awhile. Because of our interrelationship with India. This stuff goes on all the time there, children from the 'lowest caste' don't count and are abused daily and no one seems to care. I only wish someone had warned us of the extreme horrific violence toward children, just so we could have been slightly prepared. I would stop all dealings with India unill they try to do something about this deplorable situation, don't hide our heads in the sand for profit. Inexcusable, but a great movie.

I had to force myself to get through the first 30 minutes...too much abuse going on with the children, but in context I understand why they had to show all of it. After the children grew up to teens, i was hooked and in love with Jamal...great movie, helped me to understand India for the first time in my life. This movie is merely ok; hardly hit-worthy. It's no Namesake or Mississippi Masala, put it that way. Kudos for the attempt to depict slum life but that's become gimmicky after Born Into Brothels and Salaam, Bombay so it felt exploitative. The rest was an Americanized Bollywood film with a predictable plot. Also racist and culturally elitist. Notice how the little boys start out very brown and by the time they're adults the "evil" one stays dark and curly-haired while the "good" one has magically become a virtual white boy with light skin and straight hair? Casting inconsistency to say the least but more likely designed to reap white American dollars. (theme: if you have a good heart you'll turn white and get rich).

This movie deserves all of the accolades! It was awesome! To repeat all of the other posters would be redundant, but truly it had action, romance, shocking depictions of poverty and child abuse, hope, love, comedy and camaraderie.
I would assume that anyone going to see this movie would have known beforehand that there would be disturbing images since the title contains the word "Slumdog" but to each his/her own. The low marks are not deserved. I would have given it a million stars!
