I was so dissapointed, It was just one more gay movie trying to make political and social movments. What were Sean Penn, Diego Luna thinking when they agreed to be in this movie?. Don't waste your money !

Truly a powerful film. Perfectly cast. It was amazing to see how far we have come and yet how far we have to go in terms of civil rights in this country. Given the recent Prop 8 vote in CA wish this film was released prior to the election.

We are two white straight females in our 60's, and found this movie riviting. A must see. Any movie that reminds us that we are all human beings, living on the same planet, breathing the same air, eating the same food, should be able to love and live the way we feel. Everyone in this film is just wonderful. Sean Penn is just brillant..... as usual

What an aweinspiring movie. It was a great experience to watch this movie. Even though I was sad after walking out of this movie, I still felt moved and inspired.
My eyes and ears were glued to the movie, especially when Sean Penn got up to make a speech. Sean just melted into the role. So much so you didn't see the actor, you saw Harvey Milk. He played Milk's part well in that he was just a guy standing up for what he believes in, people's rights and reaching out to all the voters, gay or straight. He seemed like he could stand on top of the world and move any crowd with his words.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes being moved and inspired. It is worth every penny, even to see it more than once.

Every historical epic has something to say to those living today. This one shouts, "Step Out," to young gay men who've slipped back into the "designer" closet created for us by the media. Be someone besides the plasticene parody of gay men. Be yourself TO yourself, like Harvey Milk was. To everyone else, it says, "Act out, Act up," resist the complacency that age, affluence or religious protectionism can bring.

I am squeamish when it comes to sexual nudity displayed on screen in a public theater. Homosexual nudity is an even greater hurdle for my general sensibilities to overcome and there is that in "Milk". That said - one can still be in awe of Sean Penn's performance as Harvey Milk. An amazing movie where Sean Penn not only channels the persona of Milk but also captures his physical appearance. Penn's performance does not an angel make re Milk. He paints a complex portrait of the very human and often conflicting emotions and actions that roil about in the constellation of Harvey Milk's openly gay private and political life. Worth a viewing for Sean Penn's mesmerizing performance alone.

This movie was one of the best I've seen in a long time. It was emotional, moving, inspiring and heart-breaking. The story of Harvey Milk has always been something that has touched me as a gay person, however, I believe anyone - gay or straight - can understand and be moved by what happens here. In fact, my wish is that every one see this movie. Tell your family, your friends, any one who will listen.
Harvey was ahead of his time in his vision and in the words he spoke. He is a true hero. See for yourself.

While "Milk" was a good portrayal of Gay Liberation Movement, it failed to recognize the important role of Black and Latino gays. They were the first inhabitants of the Castro and the bars that are now par of Gay history. But in the film, we see only a few non-White faces and then only incidentialy.

Exquisitely written, filmed and acted. The story is gripping and, sadly, true. It's disturbing to see the struggles of gay people in America and how unfairly they've been treated. Gays aren't portrayed in a glowing aura, and aren't shown as martyrs. You just see human beings who deal with the worst kinds of bias but struggle for equality. Harvey Milk is not a typically charismatic leader - he's a man committed to a cause. Someone like you and me.
I wish they had not named the movie "Milk". If you don't know the history, you'd think it's about dairy farming or breast feeding. The name is a turn-off and doesn't create interest.
Sean Penn is the very best actor in movies today.

Gay or straight or any flavor in between you cannot help but be touched by the inspirational power of Harvey Milk's journey from unmotivated 40 year old to galvanized public servant.
Through personal loss and triumph he perseveres with a sunny optimism. I can only imagine what he might have accomplished had he lived.
The performances are exemplary. Josh Brolin plays Dan White as a deeply conflicted man. Penn's Milk is an example of complete and effective immersion in a role...I forgot it was Sean Penn about 2 minutes into the film (I've never really been a fan). I can't recommend this highly enough. Go. See. It. Today.

This movie shows that everyone has a right as a citizen of the US and everyone should fight for those rights. No one wants to spread homosexulity, but only want the right to live our lives. This movie showed a grassroots struggle and Harvey Milk was an inspiration to us all. This had to be Sean Penn's best roll ever. I never saw Sean Penn in the character that he brought to life in an amazing performance that should bring him an academy award. And the rest of the cast, James Franco, Josh Brolin and the rest were perfect in their roles.

I grew up in the Bay Area when these events occurred, and I remember it so well. Sean Penn absolutely became Harvey Milk (Oscar a given). The passion and fear of the times is eloquently portrayed-- depsite the violence and uncertainty, it's almost poignant. Movie shows Milk to be the MLK of the gay rights movement.

This movie proves Sean Penn does not shy away from any part, it is full of tragedy, comedy and great acting...Sean Penn and the cast don't shy away from the "gay" element at all (neither does the director) but with the comedy in the film it does not make this a "GAY" film...I would recommend this to anyone.

Sean Penn does an amazing acting job in this movie and his portrayal of Harvey Milk is award winning. Initially, I did not understand the passion and intensity of the gay movement for rights. I always thought it was a selfish fight. However, I believe I understand the passion now.
It is my hope that the movement will remain focused on unity and freedom of individuals rather than ... well you know...

Head and shoulders above the other movies of 2008. This will become a classic. Should earn best picture and best male actor at forthcoming Academy Awards.
Too bad this movie didn't come out before the recent Proposition 8 vote in California banning gay marriage, which passed by only 250,000 votes. Watch for the voters to overturn that mistake next year.

I thought this movie was wonderful and inspiring. It was an amazing story of the gay rights movement and Sean Penn was as brilliant as I had heard he was.
However, I don't consider myslef a prude but I'm never particulary interested in sex scenes of any kind whether it's heterosexual or homosexual. So the one thing I did not like, were the sex scenes. Why in movies is the sex between males are always so rough? I wonder if this is a stereotype of male/male sex or if' it's a reenactment - if you will - of Scott & Harvey's love making. Mostly, the sex scenes made me uncomfortable for that reason.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Both of us, my wife (actress, singer) and me agreed that Sean must get another Oscar for Harvey Milk portrait. Great cinematography, time capsule of 70's. Brolin was great, but not a stretch as an act, another macho, tough guy performance.
Who was notable act was latino boyfriend of Harvey Milk.
Again, Penn must get Oscar for this, OMG. He just took torch as THE BEST actor from Pacino or Denzel, because of huge diversity and different profiles he portraits, so brilliantly, in each movie, for the past 5 years. Kudos.

This historical film will arouse all your emotions. It will make you laugh, cry and dream. Especially in light of the recent defeat for gay rights in California, the film highlights the difficulties involved in the fight for gay liberation in the US without ever getting sappy or condescending. Wonderful acting, directing and editing allows the story to be the teller of the tale and never falls into the trap of appearing to be an "after school special". It entertains as it educates so it's a winner on many levels.

Ironically the only thing I didn't like about this film was how honest it was. As a partnered 29yo activist living in the suburbs I would sometimes like to forget some of the details that were part of the movement 30 years ago. This film is very honest about Milk's and the other characters promiscuity and drug use. Other than being slightly uncomfortable with those things, I respect the poignancy of this film. I found it inspiring.

This is a great movie about a very important moment of recent American history. All the acting is great, but Sean Penn is magnificent, and he totally transforms himself; I totally believe he is Harvey Milk. It really captures the atmosphere of San Francisco in the late 70's, and I know a little bit about that because I was there, a straight student at U.C. Berkeley who was just becoming aware of the gay community. A very inspiring story.
