This movie has a lot going for it. The leads are attractive. The acting is good. Plenty of "characters". Very scenic. Something of an epic about the spirit of Australia, you might say. But there are negatives. The dialogue is sometimes hard to follow, due to accents, the vocabulary (some peculiar to Down Under), and sometimes the speaking voice is simply too low. And the movie is predictable. You just know the leads are going to spar, separate, rejoin, and love forever; you just know the villains will get their just come-uppance. Altogether, it is enjoyable but holds few surprises.

The Internet movie trailer doesn't do this film justice, so there was much more to the story than we anticipated. The movie ran the gamut of emotions, and still managed a relatively happy ending. Cinematography was great, as were the actors' performances. An outstanding film.

With Baz Luhrmann and Nicole Kidman (ala Moulin Rouge), my expectations were high going in. Australia not only met but exceeded them. This movie deserves to be called an epic destined to become a classic. The acting is superb by the entire cast, the story takes you on an incredible journey and Baz's wonder-filled imagination is everywhere. Suspend your need for nothing but gritty reality and go to the movies to be swept away. It may seem like taking a step back in time to the big movies of yesteryear but why not? The movie was a bit predictable, however, it kept my attention the whole way through. I was surprised when the 3 hours was over. some of the special effects were a bit "hokey", but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

I didn't know that Hugh Jackman could do drama! Well acted. Also, the aboriginal actors were terrific.
It was long, and there were 3 or 4 times after 2 hours had gone by where I thought the movie was ending.......but it kept going. That got tedious.

Like a Lincoln Continental, this movie is big, safe, and classic. The story focuses mainly on the Northern Territory of the continent, which in many ways represents the entire country/continent of Australia. This film reminded me in some ways of "Giant" starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. The homegrown villain becomes self-destructive as his insatiable lust for power grows throughout the film. The movie finds its climax during the Japanese invasian of Darwin, where through hope and bravery, the dreams of nation are fulfilled in the lives of one family and an outback ranch called Faraway Downs.

Spectacular scenery, good acting and a believable storyline combine to create a wonderful movie experience. The movie is long, yes, however it does draw you in so the time is not a factor here. A bit slow to get going but it does pick up the pace quickly and keeps your interest all the way through. This movie had such a great story, it was very heart warming and emotional. This is a very good movie. I just love Hugh Jackman. He is a superb actor and shows his stuff with this movie once again. The scenery was awesome and so beautiful. I think they should get an award just for the scenery of the movie. The storyline is also good and solid. The only problems with the movie is the length. It is very long. Quite a few had to leave the theatre to go to the restroom because of the length. They came back to enjoy the rest of the movie. I highly recommend this movie but be prepared for a long sit down. You will not be disappointed.

Keep in mind the story is fictional & unrealistic, but this is a great feel-good get-the-bad-guy pleaser for singles, couples & families alike. I was expecting to be disappointed or bored but the 2.5 hr movie zipped by with great acting, cute story (again, unrealistic, so don't expect the ultimate in intelligent drama), extravagant computer graphics, & tempting eye candy (Hugh Jackman). going into the film, i expected to love baz luhrmann's vision and the epic beauty of the australian outback... i was surprised to have become as engrossed in the characters as i did... the on screen chemistry between kidman and jackman is palpable (ladies, bring a fan, hugh jackman is HOT!) the little boy playing "creamy" was perfection... the story was believable (with one exception) and i cared about the characters... kidman's transformation was well done...

Very good movie. Enjoyed the scenery, story line and acting. Nicolle’s roll seemed a little overemphasized but think that was the persona of wealthy women of that era. Hugh was great as was "creamy". Made for good after movie discussion and research on the historical items. May take a little getting used to the accent before you hear everything.

The length isn't a problem. As you follow the storyline, you get drawn in and don't realize the length until the end. Both actors were OK. Not Oscar or other award potential. The young boy, on the other hand, should get a nomination. He was great for someone so young. And the folks that say they cannot understand the narration, please listen carefully. He speaks quite clearly.

This is worth 3 stars and a recommendation to go to as it is basically a good movie for teenagers and older. It shows the hardships of life and the courage it takes to overcome many of the obstacles. The setting of during WW 2 and the early settler days of Australia makes for a love story with pioneer desire to survive.

Really enjoyed this movie and fell in love with the little boy; he steals the movie. Thought it was a good story and was pleasantly entertaining. I enjoyed Kidman's character and thought she was great and Jackman also played a fun character and was easy on the eyes. I loved how they weaved the Wizard of Oz into this movie. I had no problem sitting thru 2 hrs 45 minutes.
