As a child of the 80's, I absolutely loved the music in this movie. I even brought my 10 yo daughter, who had heard Dancing Queen maybe twice in her life- and even she LOVED it! Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan were finally not typecast and proved they had some chops (a little struggle for Pierce though...) At times it did feel a little cheesy, but then I remembered I was watching a MUSICAL, not a full-fledged movie and that is what you get! I loved every second of it and cannot wait to see it again and buy it when it hits the stores.

My girlfriend and I saw it last night. She hated it -- too corny -- but I liked it a lot. We both agree that the scenery is beautiful (it reminds me when I went to Santorini in 2006, the moonlight and sunsets in Oia are amazing), and that Christine Baranski is the best singer (she is a professional singer, in fact). The plot is threadbare, just a vehicle to hang the songs on. But here's the thing -- if you go in there with low expectations, and just give yourself over to the goofy silliness of it all, then you'll enjoy yourself. You can tell by watching the actors' faces that they REALLY enjoyed making this movie -- after all it's the Greek Islands! What a beautiful part of the world to live in. --- IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE YOU STAY AFTER THE CREDITS ROLL FOR A SPECIAL SURPRISE!

I love the stage production and the music. The actors performances ar great, nd it really is a fun movie. But most of the actors can't carry the music, which is the heart of this tail. Would I go see it again, yes but given the option of the movie or the stage the stage wins hands down.

It's fabulous. I cried from sheer joy. Everyone on the screen is having so much fun and the music is infectious. As the older gentleman next to me said...."this is just like a big Broadway musical". And better the location is gorgeous. You'll want to plan a trip to Greece. Acting is top notch. Will be seeing it again, buying the DVD and seeing the stage show again! Yeah Mamma Mia.

I've never seen the play - but have heard great things about it, so I was anxious to see the movie. It just seems that some of the songs are at very inappropriate times and it was a lot goofier that I expected. I LOVE going to musical plays - and I think I should have seen the play first.

I couldn't wait for this movie to come out, and I saw it on opening night as I was not disappointed. I have seen the play 3 times and the movie was just as wonderful. I think everyone should see this movie and if you are not an ABBA fan before you see it you will be when you leave the theatre.

If you liked the Broadway show, you will love this one. It is funny, it has beautiful scenery, fantastic music and pretty fine acting too (Meryl et al). As for the story line, well it is as believable as the story in Shakespeare's 12th Night is. But who cares? It's all about having a good time.

The movie was an excellent take on the musical featuring the songs by ABBA. Most "critics" will not like it because of its happy feel and happy ending since they only "like" movies with unhappy endings or movies about Los Angeles. Having never seen the stage show, I had no pre-conceived ideas about what to expect. I just knew that I liked ABBA music and movies that look like a lot of fun, and this seemed to offer both. First the good: Meryl Streep (Donna) was absolutely fantastic, as were Amanda Seyfried (Sophie), Christine Baranski (Tanya), and Julie Walters (Rosie). I knew Meryl could sing after seeing her in "Postcards from the Edge" so it was nice to see her dive into a full-blown musical. She seemed to be having the time of her life in this role. The cinematography was superb. I don't remember ever seeing a movie so lush and beautiful, it really set the mood for all of the romantic moments in the movie. The use of the music was quite wonderful (as it should be in a musical). There's a scene where Donna is singing as she helps Sophie get ready for her wedding and it's heartbreaking to watch her realize that her daughter is grown up and that she'll have to let her go. The choreography is great, and really took advantage of the larger canvas a motion picture offers vs. doing a stage show. The tone of the movie felt very "European comedy" to me. It's hard to explain, but a lot of the visual gags reminded me of Benny Hill (and I actually mean that as a compliment). Now for the bad: The script is clunky (and I'm being kind). There's a really great story here, but the moments used to connect them are all over the map that at times you felt like plot points were falling from the sky with no explanation or consequences. The most glaring example is that a character in the film turns out to be gay (I won't say who here so as to not spoil it for you)... this was SORT of set up earlier in the film, but that earlier moment seems like the "outing" was actually a misunderstanding straight out of Three's Company, so when the real outing is mentioned again it seems like a callback joke rather than a real moment. Good musicals use music to move the story along. Bad musicals use dialogue to set up an excuse to sing. While mostly good, this movie did have some moments of bursting into song just for the sake of it. A few songs being cut from the stage version to the screen version would not have hurt this production (it certainly didn't hurt "Hairspray") Pierce Brosnan's singing is god-awful. He wasn't off-key, he was just horribly Neil Diamond meets Michael Boltonesque. I actually would have rather seen Pierce and Colin Firth switch roles. Overall... it's good mindless fun, but don't buy into the Hollywood Reporter's review that this is Oscar worthy (except for cinematography and a few behind-the-scenes categories). It's deliciously campy.

OK, so Pierce Brosnan can't sing, and totally embarrasses himself in this movie - he is still fun, and despite all the highbrow criticism that will surely be levied against the movie, it is just pure entertainment - I loved it! Christine Baranski is a hoot, and Meryl Streep does a 50-year-old proud. The cast clearly had fun making this movie, and the joy and exhuberance they exhibit makes up for questionable singing and dancing ability. Go see this movie - it will make you happy! And whatever you do, don't leave before the credits roll!

Thsi movie was awesome!! I am not one to particiapte in online fare but this was sometrhing i had to do because I loved this movie soooo much ! After much excitement I have to say I am disappointed. I didn't know if I was on some terrible acid trip or bad Karaoke bar. Great scenery but the movie seemed disconnected, all over the place, nobody could sing and not much of it was funny. I love Meryl and so wanted this to work but for me it was a big SLEEPER although I did find myself sometimes bopping to the great Abba music. Sometimes just to stay awake! =)

Big fan of Abba, saw the musical in London before it came to the States. Enjoyed it so much in London made sure to see it here in the States.
If you have seen the stage production, you won't be disappointed by the movie! They did well with the casting!
Very enjoyable movie, can't wait for the DVD!

This is one of the most fun and entertaining movies I have seen in years! Most everyone could sing. Even though Pierce Brosnan couldn't sing, he was so easy to look at that I forgot he wasn't a great singer! You should hear the women twittering in the audience when Pierce is singing "SOS" to Meryl Streep's character! The islands are gorgeous. The set was terrific! It was very true to the play!

Mamma mia! is the most fun you can possibly have at the movies! Its full of energy from start to finish, and will keep you smiling the entire time. The songs are catchy (and beware they WILL get stuck in your head), the dancing is excellent, the sets are beautiful, and the perfomances are all respectable. Mamma mia! is not as good as last summers big budget musical "Hairspray", but it is definitely just as, (if not more) fun! This is a movie that all ages can and will enjoy. And for those of you with young children there is only brief sexual material. So take the whole family and have FUN!

I've seen this musical in London and thought the audience there was amazing - really into the music! That said - this movie was great because you had the real ocean and outdoor scenery! Meryl Streep should get an academy nod for her performance - a pleasant surprise. Pierce Brosnan cannot sing....a bit choppy but overall a fun feel good movie!

I've been waiting for this movie for eight years, ever since first seeing the play. I wasn't disappointed. Loved it. It was great seeing people sing along with the cast, especially at the end. And the scenery. I can see Oscars for Cinematography and Sound. Fantastic use of all 5 of the channels behind the screen.
