I took my mother-in-law to see this movie and we had a blast. We agreed that Brosnan can't sing, but we thought it added to the humor. Most people don't realize this musical is a comedy (many musicals are very serious) If you go expecting it to be funny, you won't be dissappointed! We loved everything about this movie! And I can't wait to buy the DVD!

"Mamma Mia!" is a film based upon the Broadway sensation of the same name starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Amanda Seyfried and Colin Firth. The film follows the stage musical and is based upon the songs of successful 1970s group, ABBA, with additional music also composed by ABBA member Benny Andersson. This romantic comedy follows a mother (Streep) as she prepares for the wedding of her daughter Sophie (Seyfried) to uber hot Sky (the looks-better-with-his-shirt-off, Dominic Cooper). Despite opening the same weekend as The Dark Knight, the film had the largest opening weekend of any musical film in U.S. history.
I really liked this film. It was toe-tapping, song-along, good fun. And while the major fault of this movie was Pierce Brosnan trying to sing (emphasis on "trying"), the music in the film is all of ABBA's greatest hits, so how couldn't you have a good time? Granted, the musical is far superior (more energy, better choreography and superb singing), but the film had some breath-taking views of the Greek seashore and Amanda Seyfried did an excellent job playing the young bride-to-be.
I give "Mamma Mia!" four and one-quarter bridal bouquets (out of a possible five).

I almost always feel uncomfortable watching musicals, and this was no exception. Especially during Pierce Brosnan’s apparently painful numbers. Watching actors sing at each other, each looking at least a little self-conscious given the unlikely settings and overall absurdity, makes for a cringe-worthy movie-going experience.
Having never seen the stage version and knowing nothing of the story, I was at least entertained by the expectation of surprise. But I was never carried away with ebullience, which was the point.
Mamma Mia had the makings for greatness but never got there in my opinion. Now maybe if they were animated characters…

Would I call it the best movie ever? No. But I needed to laugh and escape, and this movie gave me that. I enjoyed seeing Meryl Streep being silly because as much as I like her, I always see her acting technique, and here she just seemed to be having fun. I was impressed with her singing, even though sometimes the songs came out of nowhere and didn't make much sense. Not too impressed with Pierce's singing, but he was nice to look at. Oh -- and now I want to go to Greece...

I've seen the stage version of this, and It was wonderful. I saw the movie, I'm mama mia'd out. This movie, while it was good, was nothing like the real thing. It was a , I've seen it, maybe if its on TV, I'll see it again. But good acting, singing was wonderful, and I loved 'Winner takes it all'.

ok first off, the movie is very well cast. I adored the fact they didn't cast professional singers, I believe there was some musical backup but M Streep has a really great voice! The young girl (from MEAN GIRLS) does a nice job as the sweet inquisitive daughter but the essence of the movie would be most appreciated by woman ages 30-50 I'd say. My 12 year old liked it, my 17 year old laughed more at me and my laughing out loud than the movie. Will see again

I have seen the musical several times and was not sure what to expect in the movie version. I was very impressed! As were my movie companions who have also seen the musical several times. I love musicals, and I love ABBA. I had high expectations, and I was not disappointed. The casting was great...I loved Meryl Streep's energy. The only thing bad I have to say is that Pierce Brosnan's voice should have been dubbed...he cannot sing...but who cares, he's adorable. I give it 5 stars for sure! I saw Mamma Mia with my daughter, sister, and niece. Two of us are over 60, and the other two are mothers in their late thirties. We ALL enjoyed it thoroughly. (However, we cringed during Pierce's songs but agreed we love him in spite of his lack of singing ability.) Meryl Streep, as usual, was delightful throughout the whole movie. Her personality is contagious! It was a great night for all of us.

Took my mom to see this movie. We both laughed until we cried. Pierce can't sing but it just added to the hilarity of the movie for us. We did not go in with high expectations and were able to sit back and enjoy. Meryl Streep made me want to smile with her. So she is not the best singer. She was fun in the movie. Julie Waters really made the movie. She knit the the characters together in fun so that any bad acting or singing just played off as added laughs. I intend to buy the DVD when it comes out. I will watch it again and again and laugh every time.

Before going to the movie, I read reviews that were posted at at the time (July 27th AM), but mostly, I read the ones with 2 stars or fewer. I was going anyway, but wanted to know what negatives the other viewers had. I thought that Pierce Brosnan was actually pretty good, considering that he is not a "singer". I thought that Meryl Streep was outstanding, and the other leads were very good, although, I did have a problem with some in the chorus. And as for Dominic Cooper (Sky,) I did not care for him. Overall, the movie was fun and I would highly recommend it to my friends.

I had not seen the Stage production (Yes, I live under a rock!) but loved the intertwining of the songs with the story. It took me back to the 70's, the DISCO Era, and all the fun I had when I was in my teens. Believe the movie was one song too long. The movie dragged towards the end. For 1 1/2 hours sitting there -- Not too bad. I was surprised that Meryl could sing as well as she did... Pierce, do us a favor -- leave singing to the professionals. This movie will probably go in the hamper with other campy musicals that have become cult classics. As they say -- It gave me something to do for 1 1/2 hours, but I left the theater with a smile on my face.

It was everything I expected and more!!!!!!!! even my husband who thought he would not like it, adored it and would see it again. Meryl deserves another Oscar.

Let's just get this out of the way: Pierce Brosnan? Should NOT be allowed to sing. He's very pretty to look at, but singing & acting at the same time is NOT his forte. Everyone else was great and I was pleasantly suprised by Meryl Streep and her voice. The scene stealer in the movie is Julie Walters who brings enthusiasm and fun to every movement and line. The large ensemble scenes are the best things of the movie, but as a whole? Mamma Mia is just not at the top of the movie musical mountain.

We saw Mamma Mia and thought it was great. It was a fun entertaining movie with good music and dancing. I have never heard so many people leave a theater say, "I'd see that again"as I did in leaving Mamma Mia. I think Meryl Streep will win an academy award. Hollywood, if you are listening...More movies like this one.

I had no idea what Mama Mia was about. I haven't listened to ABBA since my teen-age years. I enjoyed the music then and now very much. The characters were funny. Especially , "James Bond" singing and caring about relationships. I was in the theater with mostly women over 40. We did not stop laughing until the end.

I was so very impressed with this movie. It made me laugh, smile and even cry a little. It is truely one of the best feel good movies I have seen in years. In this world of uncertainty, it is like a breath of fresh air. I ordered the music from the movie the next day. I also went and bought the ABBA CD. I was amazed at the wonderful talent of all the actors and actresses. I love Meryl Streep and Julie Walters. We need more of these films. Bravo

Scenery, music, funny, made you sing along, stand, clap and dance......great date movie except we enjoyed it for our anniversary, an ever greater date just like the movie! A WOW performance Meryl and Pierce were wonderful.
