Cliched, trite, poorly acted and miserably directed. It was a complete bore from beginning to end. Julia played the character as a driveling self-centered boor. Ryan Murphy should stick to writing TV. He was way over his head on this one. Jennifer Salt (the writer) should be forced to surrender her Writers Guild Card for writing what is possibly the worst dialogue ever put to film. If you are thinking of seeing this film, RUN TO ANOTHER CINEPLEX.

I loved the book and would not miss the movie for anything--it is a divorced woman's fantasy...I enjoyed the movie although it was too long and not well made. all the places were fantastic to see. really not very good acting --just go to lose yourself in the fantasy

Liz (Julia Roberts), after divorcing someone who has no idea who they are, decides she needs to find out who she is. She glides through most of the rest of the film relatively peacefullly, eating her way through Italy (manless), praying her way through India (with a male platonic buddy(Richard Jenkins) who annoyingly calls here "Groceries"), and tries to balance her way through Bali, until confronted with a hint of a request for commitment by a possible mate (Javier Bardem), at which she explodes showing anger and misery from where? Lots of nice scenery and pretty food, not much acting, until the explosion, which is more like SNL "ACTING!!!".
This definitely couldn't keep my mind of the bout of Restless Leg Syndrome that decided to hit that night.

I totally enjoyed the movie... One would think it was a made for the movies story due to the happy ending but it gives one hope that happy ending DO come true. It makes me want to pack it up and go on an adventure. All the actors delivered an A+ performance.

I think this was a lovely movie. I could relate to the characters and their feelings. It was hard reliving those feelings. I think this film touched the heart in a way to teach us to be true to our selves; to be in tune to our personal feelings. I read other reviews, so I imagine if you've read the book, the movie will not be as rich of an experience as it was for me. I really enjoyed the journey. It was very emotional and relatable. I was able to connect with Julia Roberts' character (Liz) and feel the growth she experienced along the way. I think it's definitely worth checking out on the big screen.

Having never read the book, but hearing ALL the hype, my expectations were high. While Roberts' performance is adequate, the material doesn't translate well to the screen. I found myself thinking that this is yet another mid-life-crisis-finding-yourself-movie ... except that this woman has enough money to travel the world to find "it". While I appreciated the cinematography and exotic locals, I failed to understand the source of the character's unhappines. I wasn't convinced at any point that she understood why she was unhappy, so the decision to BE happy was just as unconvincing. Skip it.

Owed my girl this movie because she agreed to Hot Tub Time Machine (Don't Ask) Was skeptical and didn't really want to but was pleasantly surprised. Could easily pick up an oscar or two but not for Ms. Roberts. Typical performance by her w/nothing new and certainly no stretch. She was good in it just not great and can't see a best actress nod for her. Otherwise a very witty film and great location shots!

Before seeing this movie, I had read several reviews, and heard it reviewed on the radio. I've also read the book. The movie was OK. It felt more like "what I did on my summer vacation" than the transformative experience chronicled in the book. All of the interesting information that I learned from Liz's experiences in the book just weren't present in the movie. That said, it wasn't a bad movie, but I don't think it was worth the ticket price. Just rent it when it comes out on DVD.

I am seeing these scathing reviews as though the woman killed children and then ate them. Get a grip people, it is a light summer chick flick!

I have not read the book yet, but after seeing the film I went out and bought a copy. Julia Roberts is wonderful in this movie, and it's very entertaining and pleasing to watch. Sad at times too, but beautiful and also real.

i had very high hopes for this movie. my mom read the book and loved it, and i love julia roberts. she did an excellent job, but i felt the movie dragged on. the story line was good, i just feel like they could've done much more with it. i was expecting much much more.

Well, I can't see the now self-realized Elizabeth Gilbert thinking this movie has the balance she so arduously sought out. The movie's arc seemed out of order, unbalanced, and the transitions between locations were non-existent.
Someone who hadn't read the book would be completely lost and think that the main character possibly suffers from schizophrenia. There were ideas and 'lessons learned' brought up at the wrong time and place. For example, she goes to Italy to lose herself in food and culture and language while wrestling with her demons and ghosts of past relationships. Well, she seemed totally fine (and not physically worn out at all) in Italy, whereas in Bali, she has an unnecessary fight with the one guy she falls in love with and supposedly feels totally comfortable around.
Disappointed in the final product, I have to wonder if the author had any say in the final product or not. What would Swami G say?

I didn't read the book, but have many friends who loved it. With that said, I think the producers could have gone with a no name and still pulled in the box office numbers. Also I wish that they had taken a chance with the sound track and used songs to really make the mood of that scene. This movie had a lot of chance to grab tears but fell short of that ah ha moment every time. I thought I would leave feeling inspired but in reality, she didn't have it so bad or didn't express her loss of inspiration enough to pull me in. In all I felt no connection (and I am divorced and lost/gave every this) with the character and rate this as a rainy Sunday netflix rental at best.

I absolutely LOVED the book so of course I had to see the movie. I knew they couldn't include everything but the movie lacked feeling and depth. It was too disjointed and I didn't really connect with Liz's emotional, physical and spiritual journey on screen as I did in the book.
Liz Gilbert is such a wonderful writer with a great wit and it just didn't translate well on screen. The acting was fine, the scenery beautiful and Javier Badem is always yummy but you would be better off reading the book and waiting for the movie to come on HBO.

I have to admit that I LOVED the book. Thankfully I read it over a year ago, so I was fuzzy on some of the details. However, I saw a lecture that Liz Gilbert presented several months ago. Putting a face and voice with the author and getting even a small impression about her personality was really enjoyable. Then, when I found out Julia Roberts was playing her I thought right away that it wasn't a good fit. Julia is a wonderful actress and I enjoyed her acting in the movie, but the book and the movie have a completely different feel. Both good, but for different reasons.

Lovely scenic views of exotic areas. Julia and the rest of the cast are easy on the eyes. They even managed to find adorable beggars for the scenes in India. On my personal $1-$5 scale - it was a $2.

I completely enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to my female friends. I went in thinking it was a "chick flick", it is. The storyline really makes us stop and look within ourself to realign ourselves with who we are and where we stand as an individual. I would see it again, Julia Roberts did great, as she always does.
