I usually enjoy seeing movies of books that I've read, but not in this case. The movie seemed choppy in comparison, especiailly in Bali where her relationship with Wayan was largely glazed over.
If you haven't seen the movie, I would definitely recommend it because the characteres were likable, the messages are strong and resonated with me and the settings are beautiful! Good "feel good" movie.

This is not an exciting movie, but filled with meaningful examples of life, both in words and in actions. We both felt a deep warmth afterward. I was expecting it to be boring but full of advice but it was much more rewarding. I rarely (bordering on never) tear up but this got me to the edge a few times (and my partner cried about six times). Not always sad tears, usually great joy. Its a movie to absorb, without expectation.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The scenery was beautiful, the background music very appropriate to the scene, and Julia was superb as usual. The rest of the cast was not your typical "top stars" but played their parts like stars. My friend had read the book and said the movie was even better.

I thought I was going for a Husband of the Year nomination by taking my wife to this movie. I expected to just be taking one for the team. However, I have to admit that the movie was very enjoyable and fun. Not sure I would invite the guys over to watch it instead of Monday Night Football but it was much better than expected.

I have not read the book, but my wife has and very much enjoyed it. She's discussed the book a lot with me, so I too looked forward to seeing the film. Sorry, but I found it very boring. The story just seemed to lack coherence, and didn't flow. It didn't draw me in and hold my interest. Julia Roberts seemed to be playing "Julia Roberts" as she often does. The book may be one of those that doesn't adapt well to the screen. The "inner perspective" of this book is quite dominant which makes transfer to film a big job. Voice-over just isn't enough. We liked the soundtrack. I do look forward to reading the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The casting was pretty good -- Julia Roberts was perfect in this role -- and many of the other characters were convincing. However, Javier Bardem, wonderful actor as he is, was not convincing as a Brazilian. I'm fluent in Brazilian Portuguese and the fact that he is not was very evident. Otherwise, I have no complaints.

It was a beautful book and the movie was great too!! You really reflect on your own relattionships. We only live once, so keep your love alive and enjoy, appreciate each other. Can't wait to go to Italy! The whole story is dreamy, I mean who can do what Liz did. How brave and frightning at the same time. This movie had a whole Bridges of Madison County feel only she didn't know who she was missing only that he was still out there. Bless you both and all of you still looking.

Many reviewers seem to miss what is for me the most important theme of the movie, which is learning to overcome anxiety and depression. This point is much clearer in the book than the movie. Liz had been in therapy and on medication for years (which they fail to mention in the movie) and was still miserable. She went on her quest to learn to still her negative thinking and be happy again. Once she learned that, in Italy and India, then she was ready to love in a healthy way, in Bali. The movie would have been much better if they had used more voiceovers, of what was actually going on in Liz's head, to show some of the self-dialogue from the book. Overall, a good job translating to screen a complicated journey

My sister & I both enjoy Julia Roberts' movies. While this wasn't her "best ever", she brought her character to life in beautiful settings & thoughtful moments. I loved Javier's portrayal of a sensitive, yet sexy man -I didn't know he could look that good! It's true what they say about not going to see this "hungry" -the food is fabulous and bountiful.

I went to see this movie with a girlfriend and it was a chick thing. I love the exotic locations and the richness of the landscapes. I was a little lost in the begining of the movie but as it progressed I was drawn in. I was moved by the India experience and the Richard Jenkings preformance. Again I found myself wanting to visit Italy and Bali. Over all it was a wonderful treat.

Although this is based on a true story and supposed to be a drama, there were a few lines that really made me laugh. I did not read the book so I can't compare the two, but I did like the movie. I would recommend the movie but I would say to watch it in the comfort of your home - it's not one of the movies worth paying movie theatre prices.

My date and I loved this movie. The cinematography was extraordinary. The message, special. We all look for special relationships. Elisabeth Gilbert's share of her experiences is so special. We have been moved and will be contemplating her thoughtful presentation of her experience. The ensemble was great. Julia was really fabulous. It was great to see Bardem in a romantic role....

I read the book....liked, didn't love it. Saw the movie loved it, didn't like it! I thought the film was beautifully shot, directed and adapted. I started crying 2 mins in and the rest of the movie was downhill from there..in a good way. I walked out almost devastated. It had so much to say about how much we allow ourselves to love ourselves and others. Beautiful!

Julia Roberts is luminous, of course, and of course Javier Bardem is smoldering in an offhand way (plus his character is very kind which makes him truly appealing) but I just didn't find this movie inspiring. I actually found myself dozing through parts. Italy just didn't do it for me . . . but the bigger thing is that Liz Gilbert just didn't do it for me. I'm her age so I don't think I can blame being old for feeling like leave-your-marriage-to-find-yourself isn't a romantic endeavor no matter what beloved star plays the role in the movie.

It has been more than a year since my wife and I have gone to a movie. She thoroughly enjoyed Eat, Love, Pray and I was able to appreciate it only because she was there. I like the idea of a woman choosing her life partner on her own terms; I don't think it is necessary to subject oneself to transcendental meditation in order to find true love.

A young woman leaves her marriage and immediately embarks on another relationship that also fails. Troubled, Liz realizes that she needs to focus on herself for a time. She decides to pursue a long-held desire to travel to distant places. Her sojourns in Italy, India, and Bali enable her to come to terms with her relationship failures and to renew herself physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Along the way she meets wise people who help her in her quest. Ultimately she finds a new love that she is now ready to embrace. Being divorced myself, I think the marriage breakup at the start of the film glossed over what is a long and painful process. But once Liz starts to travel the film becomes engrossing. So much of the spiritual journey is the processing and understanding of one's own pain, and as well as learning to accept and forgive oneself for being human. The film expresses all of this beautifully. Even though no film based on a book can duplicate the book's complexity and nuance, perhaps such a film may be considered a success if it makes you run out and buy the book. It did for me!

I had read the book, my friend had not! She was totally mesmerized by this movie, and its underlying messages. She said it seemed to touch on most of the life experiences and lessons learned in her own life! I thought the movie did a good job of capturing the emotional power of the book for many women. The time flew by, the scenery was spectacular, and Julia Roberts is delightful and charming, as always. I can understand how many men might not care for this movie, as the only real "male hero" shows "uncharacteristic" emotional sensitivity, but that's what the women love about him!

I had the great delight of listening to Liz Gilbert herself narrate EPL, one of my favorite audiobook experiences in years, with Liz's silky, heartfelt delivery. While some have accused Liz as being self-indulgent and acting out the fantastic whimsy of the wealthy and rich, she composed her narrative with heart, humility and insight.
And then there's the movie. Clocking in at 2 1/2 hours, it kept mostly faithful to the book until Richard's ending speeches in the second segment, and the last part, "Love," which the screenwriters drained of all depth and meaning with a plot that showed a pale resemblance to the book. The original memoir was far more complex and insightful than the movie, which seemed dumbed down to the point where it seemed out of the box ready for the lowest Lifetime denominator for a dreary afternoon. Julia Roberts remains one of the most luminous presences on screen, but, as Dorothy Parker once wrote about a young Kate Hepburn's stage performance, "She ran the full gamut of emotion from A to B." Only to have Laura Linney or Cate Blanchett in the role! Richard Jenkins was great, but again, they had to totally change his character by the end of the second segment. And Bardem would have been far better served with decent writing and respect for the audience.
So, we end with a shamelessly manipulative, beautifully photographed piece with the depth of early winter ice on a skating pond.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
