Movie very slow, it could have been very uplifting and interesting, but wasn't. It seemed to keep letting us down. Was really surprised being a Julia Roberts fan. Very immature movie and would not recommend it at all.

This is a wonderful movie, especially for those of us who are in a season of trying to find ourselves, our passions, and what's really important in life. Julia Roberts is lovely and vulnerable as Elizabeth, and the rest of the cast and characters brought each part of her experience to life. Beware, this movie will give you the travel bug!

Three years ago, I read the book. It was intriguing and inspiring. When the movie was announced, I couldn't wait to see it. A girl friend went along and had not read the book. We both enjoyed it immensely. I remembered descriptions in the book which were left out of the movie, those describing the enlightening break through in meditation, and those spicy details of the first love making. If one has not read the book, you don't know these things but I suppose the director didn't feel they were significant - I did. Over all, I thought the movie was beautiful, the acting was superb and the scenery was incredible. A mature woman who has experienced life, I could definitely relate to Gilbert's experiences and would highly recommend this movie as well as the book to all women who are looking for an authentically fulfilling life. It is inspiring.

I read the book while on a trip to Africa and absolutely loved the book. Once I knew a movie was coming out I could hardly wait and saw it opening day mid-day. I loved the movie and thought Julia Roberts was excellent. The location scenes were beautiful although I have never been to India or Bali. It was hard to compact the entire book into a 2 hour movie but they did a fantastic job of following the book. Would highly recommend this to anyone who has ever questioned their life path.

Loved the book, and thought i would hate the movie. Didn't. Julia Roberts was a better Liz Gilbert than i expected as well, but that huge mouth and yarnspool of hair really cracked the illusion at times.Way too much makeup for India and Bali, too! The movie teetered on the neat and even whereas the book was messy, funnier and much more intimate. The message of balance and the fear of losing it in romance once you miraculously gain it in solitude was clear, but the ending was just a little too Hollywood for me. It was beautiful to watch, tender to remember (if you read the book), and generally...nice. Definitely go see it (if only for Javier Bardem--oo la la) and...Enjoy! But read the book if you want to dive inside the whole experience and find out what the magic is all about.

Girls' night out with 4 other women - only one read the book and liked the movie. The rest of us didn't - I can only assume that more needs to be "read" into it as we thought it was boring. One actually fell asleep thru most of it. I kept waiting and waiting for something to evolve. Seemed like it was supposed to be about Liz finding her own identity meanwhile she picked up everyone else's and so ending was no surprise - movie title pretty much was the movie. Hot Javier at least caught our attn the last part of the movie!!

After reading the book Eat, Pray, Love, I came to the movie theater with hefty expectations. The book was witty, a fun read, and full of the emotional heartbreaks, joys and ironic moments that take your breath away. The movie however, was simply boring, and included very little of the wit and deep emotional highs and lows that made the book fun to read.
I love Julia Roberts, but this was not her finest performance. We rarely got to see in her the deep emotions that the book portrayed, though there were some funny moments here and there. Still, both Julia's performance and the other actors held the plot together well, even though the movie moved at a slow pace.
At movie's end, however, I looked over at my friends, and each of us was either yawning or stretching. Always fun to watch Julia Roberts, but Eat, Pray, Love turned out to be a bit of a snoozer.

I loved the book and listened to it on my ipod, I was so excited to see this movie that I was there on opening night! I've always been a Julia Roberts fan as well. It was boaring! Slow moving, didn't stay true to the book. Julia's lips are so big that it's distracting, she should back off on the collegen injections. Save your money until it comes out on HBO...

I read Eat, Pray, Love on an airplane—perfect airplane book. I then saw the video of Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED talk and admired her a lot. I very much looked forward to the movie—whether it departed from Gilbert’s book or not. I highly recommend the soundtrack cd. Eddy Vedder has two stunning songs, especially Better Days. Maybe he’ll be invited to Academy Awards? Alas, the movie is a bit of a let down. I love Julia Roberts. I love Javier Bardem. I love travel scenery…and there was the first let down: The best footage of Bali is in the trailer! I expected more eye candy shots of Rome, India and Bali. Maybe they paid Julia and Javier too much and skimped on the travel shots to save money? India definitely got short shrift. Any amateur can get gorgeous shots of India. The director just didn't "get" India. Maybe they were keeping with the real life character but Julia’s clothes—except for one stunning Sari—were not particularly covet-worthy. Her Bali house, however, and Javier’s Bali house as well…were to die for! So many books are better than the movies they turn into that I tried to not have big expectations. I would have been satisfied with lovely travel shots, Javier and Julia, and super clothes. It is OK with me that in real life the character would not really have had perfect clothes. Paris working girl Audrey Hepburn could never have afforded Givenchy! Fine. I so enjoyed seeing her wear them. In the book Elizabeth Gilbert gains 10 lbs eating pasta in Italy, but I’m sure she lost them again in India at the ashram. When her Swedish friend in Rome laments a similar weight gain, Julia chastises her. They then each eat a whole pizza! and then go off together to buy bigger jeans. Was that supposed to be a feminist triumph? In the movie’s final shot, Julia seems padded in baggy shorts—as if she had defiantly retained the weight gain. I would have preferred a parting shot of her in a romantic, Balinese inspired beach dress. The biggest EPL letdown was the ashram visit. Clearly writers Jennifer Salt and Ryan Murphy don’t “get” meditation. They made it look silly. And I bet anything that Ryan Murphy was responsible for the cheap joke where the British roommate started motor mouthing when her month of keeping silence was up. Richard Jenkins, the Texan friend at the ashram, may be a good actor but the direction made him come off as an annoying meditation bully. In the book, Gilbert does not dwell on the religious experience, but she obviously came away with something. You’d never know it from the movie. I found the film long and a bit tedious. I almost left during the India segment—I got so antsy. I had no other plans for the evening, so I forced myself to wait for Bali and Javier Bardem but it seemed like a long wait! I arrived 15 minutes early for the show and had to endure endless TV show commercials as well as coming attraction trailers. At least a solid HALF HOUR of that! I went to the 6:30 show and I got out at 9!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Really? This story was a best seller? Really?
I wished Julia Roberts wasn't in this movie because I really love her, but this movie just sucked! I have no idea how they cast Julia Roberts in such a self-focused, self-absorbed, immature role? Nothing like any of the other films I've seen her in.
Ok.. so this movie isn't about Julia Roberts? I get it. But even if it were any other actress, this movie was soooo boring and I couldn't wait for it to be over. Only reason why I didn't walk out is because I was with two other people whom I found out later said they would have walked out with me. I would've found more entertainment watching the people that were standing outside of the theater.

I knew nothing about the book except it had been a best seller. My wife and I attended opening night and both felt it was way too long. It was more like watching a documentary than an engaging movie. Yes, scenery was beautiful and made you want to visit those countries but the story just didn't draw you in. Having grown up in the sixties and seventies, just how many times have we heard that "I've got to find myself". Geez! I will say that I was touched by Javier's performance. It redeemed him from the character he played in No Country for Old Men. Richard Jenkins was phenomenal. His rooftop scene was oscar worthy. This was not a movie that we left feeling we had to tell people to go see. It just won't appeal to the majority of movie audiences.

The book Eat, Pray, Love was awesome. The movie missed the mark.
The movie really portrayed Liz Gilbert as a woman who couldn't live without a man and in Italy she was unhappy without a many and in India she was unhappy without a man and in Bali she finally found a man. I think this was really not the point the book was trying to make.
I love Julia Roberts and the Javier was great too, but disappointed in the movie. I would encourage my daughters to read the book, but I wouldn't let them watch the movie. Not the correct message at all.
It was long and boring and I sat through it to be disappointed. It is a shame because such a strong statement could have been made!

A pleasant movie, but for some inexplicable reason it dwells on Gilbert's ex-husband, the guy she meets in Italy, the guy she meets in India, and the guy(s) she meets in Bali.
In the book, this was covered in a score of pages, emphasizing her attempt to put all of these things behind her in order to immerse herself, reinvent herself, and purge her life of these entangled interludes. She does this through food in Italy, prayer in India, and an adventure in Bali.
In the movie we get almost no food and hardly any prayer, replaced with pervasive, and relentless, love and relationship threads. The take-away moral of the movie is that Liz just won't be happy until she finds a good man (a sentiment repeated by every native women she meets). Sadly, this is the antitheses of the book.
The movie should have simply been titled "Love." We could then, at least, hope for the sequels "Eat" and "Pray."
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This is a very boring movie. Nothing appeals to you. I dozed off in the middle.

Well, I loved the book so I was very apprehensive about how the movie might turn out. It cannot capture the entire book, but it was a very good movie and Julia Roberts was wonderful. I did not think it was a chick flick - that was a good surprise too.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I have not read the book but enjoyed the movie. I now feel that I must read the book to get all the details that could not be put in the movie!

Let me preface my opinion by coming clean and admiting that I've read this book... and I'm a guy (shocker!). It was challenging to suspend all the background and rich narrative that Elizabeth Gilbert used to tell her story in her novel and just sit back and watch at 2 hour movie, but I tried. The book was much, much better. While I found the movie to be enjoyable and transformative in parts, it seemed to just skim the surface. Julia Roberts was Julia Roberts once again. She is actress we all love to watch and she was surrounded by a supporting cast that pretty much faded into the background. The scenery even took a second seat to Julia's star power which was a shame. I believe that the story was much too personal to really be adaptable to the silver screen, but Ryan Murphy did the best he could and I am still glad that I saw this film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
