Although a movie is never as good as the book, "Eat Pray Love" starring Julia Roberts does a good job at telling the major story points. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Some of the best parts of the movie were the international scenes in India, Italy and Indonesia. You truly feel transported. See for yourself.

The beginning of the movie gave us enough background to understand the purpose for the rest of Elizabeth Gilbert's journey.
The movie was true to the book and brought out the highlights of this wonderful adventure. Insightful and inspiring, I would recommend this movie to anyone who has a quest!

Enjoyed this movie. It was good because it made me think about life differently. Maybe it will inspire people to try and make their life mean more to themselves and their family. You have to be open to change it today's society and be able to adapt and move with it. I liked it and thought the acting was very good.

Way too slow and tedious. First part in Rome was entertaining, India was boring and did not seem to make much sense, Bali was fun but it felt like 2.5 hours was long enough so let's quickly end this....Did not live up to the hype, maybe all the talk hosts and Julia overdid the promotion of this film.

For anyone who read the book see this movie. It's a real treat. Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem have great chemistry. People who did not read the book should read it first before seeing the movie as important events in the book are glossed over by the movie.
The movie is about a trip that author Liz Gilbert took to find herself after a divorce. So she decides to go to Rome for the food and to learn Italian, India to learn to meditate and Bali to spend time with a medicine man she knows. Her journey is a reminder to all of us take the opportunity to make life long memories (and just have fun) even when you think that it just can't be done because of the responsibilities of everyday life and the relationships that tie us.

I don't quite understand the invective people are hurling at Eat, Pray, Love. Seems based in such bitterness and hard-heartedness. Call me a sap, but I found this movie inspirational, moving, and authentic.
Julia Roberts, Billy Crudup, and Richard Jenkins were particularly good. Javier Bardem was pretty great, too. The locations and the cinematography were gorgeous.
I thought the story was told with considerable skill, given the challenge of making a largely inner journey external.
Was it perfect? No. Was it good, solid entertainment. Definitely yes.

Expected more based on book and trailer! Entertaining and enjoyable. Some scenes were prolonged and unimportant while other more important scenes were stiff and stilted, cut short (editing?) Tasteful love scenes were refreshing. Humorous, fun but serious scenes with impact and lessons cut short almost to be meaningless. Too bad because some great messages were there! Some dialogue in Bali hard to understand due to accent of medicine man and Brazilian. Lower your expectations and enjoy, a lot! 2.5 hours goes fast.

I would bet if I didn't read this book at the point in my life where I was having an "Attraversiamo" period of my own, this movie might have resonated better with me. But the book made such a profound impact on me due to the richness with which Liz talked about her experienced feelings that the movie was quite a let down. Although some of the key parts of the story are there, Liz's life was much more meaningful than what this movie portrayed. The movie really did a disservice to the India part of Liz's story. The Bali part concentrated too much on Felippe and not enough on how much Liz changed Wayan and Ketut in return for what they both did for her.
So I was really disappointed. But go see it. The scenery and the acting is very good...

I went to this movie because I love Julia Roberts. She is one of my absolute favorite celebrities. I left with that "feel good" emotion that only some movies can truly deliver. There were so many moments in this film that were completely relatable. The "lost--I'm looking for more" to the "this is what really matters" and everything in between. My absolute favorite quote was the one in which Julia's character remarks that "ruin is a gift. ruin is the road to transformation." If I had only gleaned this truth from the movie--it would have been enough.

Bottom line....Whiny woman! She keeps trying to find her worth in being someone else's other half. After a long trip she realizes that her worth does not come from men but from within herself. I believe she needs to realize how truly valuable she is as a child of God. If only she had a positive, Christian friend to speak life into her empty spirit, she might have been just as well off. The beginning of the movie is very sad. It is accurate I am afraid of why there are so many divorces in this country. Married couples need to learn to grow together. There can also be a freedom in marriage. When they grow apart that is only because they allowed it to happen. Sorry that is my soapbox:)

I enjoyed it, especially the Italy sequence with the camera's love affair with food, the architecture, etc. And Bali, with Javier Bardem...who could resist? But the India section, despite Richard Jenkins wonderful performance, needs to be edited way down. The taxi drive opening really catches the experience of being in India, but 10-15 minutes would have been plenty.
JR has a luminous quality that carries the film, however, do yourself a favor, if you love movies...go see the French import, Farewell. Now THERE'S a wonderful film.

As a recovering addict, alcoholic and general faithless man, this movie had great impact and reinforced the idea that forgiveness is the key to happiness. The author had to really learn about herself and how to live life on her own, giving up some of the creature comforts in order to find true comfort in God. Very inspirational and heart felt film.

Movie version of (Julia Robert's) as the unfulfilled modern American woman who had it all and gave it up to search for joy, balance and "self" and the ensuing story of what she found in place of her depression from the outward signs of happiness and success, frankly...left ME “unfulfilled”! The movie script lacked all of the substance that the book provided and the plot of the film moved slowly, while the book's plot did not. The film didn't live up to book’s humorous, wry accounts of the journey or the quote in it: “Even in my underpants, I feel different!” It did serve up beautiful scenery, however with more lips and teeth than depth of emotion. I would describe this film as lighthearted and easy on the eyes! Julia's performance was good but I don't think she'll be remembered for the role, perhaps because the script didn't give her enough to work with but, I will say... Javier Bardem eeked a superb performance out of it. My parting words, "LIKED the movie...LOVED the book."

Enjoyable. A bit trite, but the photography and
the soundtrack augmented well. Richard Jenkins as Richard from Texas stole the show.
He should be nominated for a supporting role
academy award. So did the toothless guru in
Bali. A feel-good, up movie to just bask in
the goodness we would like to visualize in the
world. Well worth seeing. No blow ups, no
extraneous, gratuitous sex. Just fun stuff.

Eat Pray Love is a beautiful and thoughtful movie about personal transformation and connection. If it is a bit long, that’s only because the movie would need to be a 3 part mini-series to convey all the wonderful content from the book! Go see it with a mind (and heart) that’s ready and willing to be awakened and inspired … then go enjoy a decadent meal with someone you love.

Being one of the few perhaps who had not read the book first, after seeing this delightful, engaging film, I now need to go back to print to fill in a few gaps for the character so superbly played by Julia Roberts. I need to know more about her! Julia was a deliciously funny, touchable, intelligent woman who found herself at odds with her inner needs and the path her life was taking. Rather than allowing herself to continue out of touch with her reality, she took charge of her life to discover what the meaning was "just for her." The character made some very hard choices not always appreciated by those in her life as well as some audience members, but overall, the journey of self discovery was thought provoking, superbly filmed, beautifully directed and enviable. In the end, the redeemable choices of her life remained very personal, but gave her an answer to "Is that all there is?" And of course the answer comes back, "Not if you let it!" By the way, I also loved the soundtrack!

I read the book about 2 years ago, about a month before I was to head to Italy. This book gave me an insight to the Italian culture before I was even there and made me more excited to go. I felt the same way about Italy as she did. The other two parts were fascinating to me because I don't know if I will ever travel to India or Bali. The book included much more details than the movie, but that is to be expected. Julia Robert's did a fabulous job in displaying the emotions the Gilbert felt on her journey. The sadness, the laughter, the hurt, the pain, and the happiness felt over the year travels are all enough reasons to go and see this movie.
