Being one of the few perhaps who had not read the book first, after seeing this delightful, engaging film, I now need to go back to print to fill in a few gaps for the character so superbly played by Julia Roberts. I need to know more about her! Julia was a deliciously funny, touchable, intelligent woman who found herself at odds with her inner needs and the path her life was taking. Rather than allowing herself to continue out of touch with her reality, she took charge of her life to discover what the meaning was "just for her." The character made some very hard choices not always appreciated by those in her life as well as some audience members, but overall, the journey of self discovery was thought provoking, superbly filmed, beautifully directed and enviable. In the end, the redeemable choices of her life remained very personal, but gave her an answer to "Is that all there is?" And of course the answer comes back, "Not if you let it!" By the way, I also loved the soundtrack!
An open mind appreciating the idea that anything is possible is a good start for this film. A complex script that was fully engaging with sufficient action to thrill most die-hard movie buffs delivers a much simpler message in the end. Perhaps not a perfect movie, but stellar photography and technical effects boosted the originality of its story. Great acting helped the less than developed characters, but overall, a must see!
