The casting and acting was very good. The scenery was breathtaking. The wardrobe choices were great, but then how hard is it to dress Julia Roberts? This is a story about a woman going thru a divorce. Not so much the legal components but the emotional turmoil of being stripped of your identity of a “wife” and rebuilding ones self. The main character is very philosophical, evolved and curious and had the means to explore these other cultures in search of enlightenment. In some ways, I thought the movie skimmed over the emotional and philosophical turmoil that the book covered and that most divorced women go thru, but then, who would want to sit and watch all of that? I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. The guy next to me, endured it. Therefore I would say it will resonate with divorced women…..single women might get it, men will just have to be supportive of their dates, smile and say, “that was beautiful”. Not sure I’d recommend it to all of my friends, but definitely my divorced friends!!!

Good to see Julia on screen again! This journey was, though not dangerous, one of going within and experiencing life through the heart. Not as deep as I would have liked, and some characters were not explored deeply, but it got me thinking about my own life and path.
Glad I went.

Julia Roberts carried the story well but I felt the film got a little off track. Guru Gita( the major mystic influence ) didn't appear in the film...big
disappointment !
I'm looking forward to seeing Gita Reddy in "Dogs Lie" in 2011. Check it out on IMBd.

A moving experience. That being said: In Italy, there was none of the sumptuous, decadent extravagance of food conveyed. The essence of the breakthrough in India wasn't attempted - could have been a cinematic wow. The makeup was hideous, and some of the shots were flat. But Javier Bardem burned up the screen. He makes a very nice nice-guy.

We like Julia Roberts very much and she did not disappoint. We loved the scenery and a lot of it was familiar from our travels. It was not a mushy "chick-flick" so I enjoyed it as well as my wife. A good movie with hardly any cursing and that little bit of rear nudity, which by the way was enjoyed by a group of young teen girls sitting near us. It was a wonderful Friday date night. We ate an early dinner, then enjoyed the show and finished with a very enjoyable ice cream.

It was a good movie for the amount of information they needed to squeeze into 2 hrs and 13min. I felt the transitions from one country to the next were a bit choppy. If you didn't read the book you missed many meaningful moments. I always love watching Julia Roberts in any movie, but to be honest I felt empty after the movie. I feel like I need to read the book again just to get what I got after I read it the first time.

As inspiring and lovely as Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat Pray Love" was to read, the movie seemed shallow and a little careless. The constant barrage of stunning glances and smiles - and the occasional tear - by Julia Roberts - cannot replace the thoughtful insights Gilbert and her companions offer in the book. It is beautifully shot though, and Roberts does a nice job with the somewhat limited script. Cautionary note: Gilbert's next book, "Committed" is uninteresting and forced, thought it's nice to know that "Phillipe" is still around!

I haven't read the book - but the hype, all the hype made me think it might be an ok movie.
Liz was the most boring, self-absorbed character I've seen in a long time. There was no reason behind any of her failed relationships, other than the split second she got a little bored, she was out of there. Wish I would of gotten out of there within the first 10 minutes of the movie.
B.O.R.I.N.G. - if you've read the book and thinking about seeing the movie - wait for the dvd.

They took a wonderful story that had to be difficult to turn into a 2 hour film (I wonder what was left on the cutting room floor?) and did a great job. Is it Hollywood - absolutely. Is it entertaining - absolutely. Is it peaceful - absolutely. Does it capture the flavor of the original novel - absolutely.
There is a merging of characters and story lines that is done very well without any true loss to the tale.
Grab your gal pals and go spend a couple of hours feeling good.

I'm 65 now...but when I was in my 20s..I had the same longing and restlessness expressed by Julia Robert's character. So I, too, set out on a 7-year journey -- working my way across the USA and then spending five years in Europe. This was at a time when it wasn't cool for a single woman to be traveling like this. I had lots of men lovers and yet the inner longing never ceased until I found an Indian guru, meditation and yoga. So this movie reflected my life -- I could have written the script. Only difference -- I never looked like Julia Roberts and I remained single...she crossed over to love -- I did not -- regretably. I cried deeply after the movie...longing in that moment for a chance to do it over.

I read the book and recall now that some aspects were pretty depressing. The movie is no different. If you decide to see it, be prepared to look into the frightened eyes of Julia Roberts for 2.5 hours.
I believe in meditation and some of the spiritual practices that were shown in the movie, but there was nothing particularly compelling about it. The other reviewers seemed to think that was what made it bad, but no, that was the only redeeming quality in my opinion. What made it not so great was the consistently depressed face of Julia Roberts. Do you want to look at someone who is confused about their direction in life and doesn't really seem to find that direction by the end of the film? Someone who is frowning for 2.5 hours?? She ends up with the man simply because she listens to a medicine man. She didn't follow through on her own guidance.

Firstly i am a guy who doesnt read books and was not really looking forward to this film, however, I suprised myself by really enjoying it and Julia Roberts will no doubt be nominated for a a few awards. The scenery, beautiful and romantic, the story line, predictable but interesting. All in all a great film. Chaps, if you want to win over the lady in your life get in touch with your femine side and take her to this movie.

I, like many, read the book and was moved with every turned page. Her writing, so personal and relate-able. I didn't want the book to end.
So it brought me a little discomfort when I heard a movie was being made as we all know the odds of the movie living up to the book are slim. So when it came to coordinating a movie day with my girlfriends - I kept my enthusiasm low.
I was so gratefully surprised. Is it just like the book? No. Are some areas of the book drawn out to 'give good movie'? Absolutely. I would've liked the moment in the bathroom when she heard "Go back to bed Liz" to be more pronounced.. But really.. the Movie did the same as the book..It inspired me. And that's all I could've asked for!
Loved the visuals... Italy, India and Bali had their own wardrobe.. it's own feel. LOVED the beauty that is Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem, and left thinking I was really living IN her life - if only for a few hours.
Bravo. Job well done!

Normally I will watch the movie first and then read the book but I did it in reverse this time. I was not disappointed by the movie and appreciated the fact that I knew the background around the relationships Liz had before going on her journey.
I would have liked to see more about the marriage to Stephen but this movie was just as impactful adn moving as the book and re-inspired me to follow my dreams and find my true self.
Julia Roberts was believable and authentic as Liz Gilbert.

I liked Eat Pray Love as a movie but I loved the book so I was a bit disappointed not to love the movie. I found it long, in need of editting and missing several important parts from the book. The cinematography, especially in Italy, was extraordinary and Julia Roberts, as always, was terrific. With all the movies in theatres now though, this one could wait to be netflixed.

Beautiful scenery! After reading the book, I must say that the movie didn't live up to hype, however it was very good. It's slow moving in some parts, and I felt that it editted out some parts that were very meaningful and sole searching in others. Julie Roberts was great as always, and it is good to see her in movies again! If you fell in love with the book, you might feel slighly let down at the movie...but if you haven't, it's very good. I would recommend seeing it!

I read the book and saw the movie. Loved them both. Understandably in the beginning some things had to be glossed over but I just loved it. It makes you think about your choices and what you need. I loved the places and will definitely go to Italy one day. India mmm not so much but it was wonderful. The movie is one I will buy and see again and again. Julia Roberts was great .

I thought that I had been through rough times in my life, and I have but Elizabeth has strength of character to be able to do what she did alone. The scenery was beautiful in Italy and Bali. The acting was excellent - you defintely feel her pain as she walks out her journey. The movie was very well done.

I have never read the book, but I have a feeling it is much better than the movie. The movie was choppy and it seemed like it left a ton of important details out. Also had long mundane scenes. I also had a hard time relating because when I feel I've lost myself, I won't be able to pause my life and travel the world. I left disappointed, feeling this movie was very hyped up.

Perhaps I should have read the book first. I couldn't wait to see this film after all the publicity and attention given by a popular shopping network. However, I just never got into it -until Bali. I enjoyed the Bali part. I even dozed off in India. (and I LOVE India) What a disappointment. I understand the concept of finding "meaning" et al...I served in the US Peace Corps in Thailand---found meaning in that. But this movie just did not "take me away..." Wait until it's out to rent, then see it. To me it was only average.

For any woman who is a little off kilter and needs balance, Eat Pray Love will give you a pleasant, comfortable ride for a little over 2 hours. Definitely go see it, enjoy it without guilt and you may end up finding some of the balance that Julia Roberts' character, Liz Gilbert seeks and ultimately finds, as if we didn't expect it. Take a few tissues but be prepared to laugh and sigh, especially when Javier Bardem is on screen - that alone is worth the experience! I found it a delightful escape and a sweet journey through the tastes of Italy, the inner peace of India and the soul searching of Bali. It inspired me to seek more balance in my own life. We all need it.

Whew! This movie is an emotional journey! They clearly did their best to include most important parts of the book. The beginning may be a little choppy if you haven't read the book as they cover a lot of territory in the first 40 minutes or so.
That said, if you related to the book, you will be bowled over by how they captured the emotion in the movie.
