I read the book and recall now that some aspects were pretty depressing. The movie is no different. If you decide to see it, be prepared to look into the frightened eyes of Julia Roberts for 2.5 hours.
I believe in meditation and some of the spiritual practices that were shown in the movie, but there was nothing particularly compelling about it. The other reviewers seemed to think that was what made it bad, but no, that was the only redeeming quality in my opinion. What made it not so great was the consistently depressed face of Julia Roberts. Do you want to look at someone who is confused about their direction in life and doesn't really seem to find that direction by the end of the film? Someone who is frowning for 2.5 hours?? She ends up with the man simply because she listens to a medicine man. She didn't follow through on her own guidance.
I really enjoyed the movie a lot. I read the book first and didn't really like it, so I wasn't expecting to like the movie this much. It was incredibly funny. I haven't laughed so much at a movie in ages. Yes, it was corny at times, but that's what I like. It was a feel good movie with it's poignant moments.
