For a story of personal initiations leading to revelations and renewal, the only challenge was how much good food can be eaten in Italy, that she witnessed an official initiation: the Indian wedding and she "won" the hostess award in her ashram, moved through men the way men move through women, and the finale in Bali, she got blessed by her guru with only a bicycle accident scratch as her deepest wound. Any one familiar with Joseph Cambell's Hero's Journey would shudder at this hoax of a Hollywood tale bereft of inner journeying.

This movie was profound. Both my daughter and I walked away wanting to see it again. For each of us it held its own unique meaning as we are at different stages in our lifes. As the writer of the book said, Julia Roberts did a wonderful job.

If you have'nt read the book then see the movie and read the book afterward. The book is a lot more indepth and when seeing the movie after the book you realize you know a lot more of what is going on than what was presented in the movie. A scene was left out that would have made the "signing of the divorce papers" a lot more impactive and the changing of whom she was doing her prayers for didnt leave you with the feeling of awe that you had surrounding the actual story of who she was doing her prayers for and what happened subsequent to those prayers. Overall it was good and the story was held too except for those two areas. As I said before if you did not read the book first you will REALLY like the book after the movie.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I read the book two summers ago and I loved the movie. There were parts of the book that the movie left out and parts they had to accelerate but overall I think they did a great job capturing the essence of the book. All of the travel scences were amazing- it made me want to travel around the world!

I love Julia Roberts and even she couldn't really help this film. It was way too long and at some points boring. It is defintely a chick flick. My husband hated it. One redeeming quality was the scenery in Italy and Bali.

The best part of the movie seemed to take place when they were in Italy. A lot of good food and good friends, but the rest was not fun. I understand that this movie was not meant to be one of those happy-go-lucky types, but it needed something more. Don't know what exactly. As far as scenery, it was very nice. Personally, I think Erin Brockavich (probably spelled wrong) was more of the type of character I like Julia in. Even the happy ending did not leave me feeling good about the movie.

Finally, a movie worth not only the price of admission plus movie popcorn and drink, but my time. It was beautiful visually, well written, well acted, in a word, SUPERB! Do not miss this on the big screen. If you are going to splurge (like I did) in this difficult economy, it is well worth it! Go see it and learn!

Julia has never been more beautiful. This is about a woman on her "journey" and is a beautiful portrayal of the steps she took. It is relatable and set in beautiful places. Javier was excellent, so sensitive , it was very palpable and believable.
All set against the backdrop of a true story, this is a movie for more mature viewers who can appreciate the nature of this lovely film.

The traveling and culture of this movie was quite appealing to us and the acting quite good. I wanted to be there with them, and that should account for great filming. It may have been a bit longer, especially for those wanted more "action", but we had enjoyed every aspect of this movie, especially knowing that it was a true story.

Julia Roberts is better than this role. It was a little too weepy and she was not portrayed or developed in a way that kept you wanting for more. The relationships were typical and the story line, while based on a book which I haven't read, was choppy and didn't flow smoothly. I wouldn't recommend spending 10 bucks to see it, wait for Red Box, then you'll be getting your money's worth.

The movie was very good. I really enjoyed myself and so did my husband. Julia was well cast in the roll of Liz. However, I read the book and the movie missed the mark in the spiritual department. Her moment with the flies was much less unneverving... and her moments with God didn't shine as brightly. There was a lot to address and it was easy to easy . But overall, I give it s big thumbs up. It was well done.

I normally love Julia Roberts movies but this one fell short of even being fair. The scenery was great but the story line left me bored to the point of falling a sleep. The writers of this movie could have really made a great script but they didn't. Even the star power of Julia Roberts could not give enough cpr to this movie. The best thing I can say is wait and watch it on HBO, Stars or regular tv. You will be money ahead.

though i would classify this movie as a "chick-flick," i truly believe even a husband or boyfriend could appreciate the realities it exposes. it brings to surface the problems people have when they lose themselves and the great things that can be discovered when taking the time to love oneself. julia roberts is phenomenal but i must say, javier bardem (felipe) really wowed me. they both really were their characters and though i did not cry, their emotional scenes were flawlessly believable. the story developed at a great pace and had a very satisfying ending. while i didn't read the book and cannot offer that comparison, i will say that the movie was phenomenal.

I read and loved the book. And I was excited when I learned it would be a movie. However, as much as I love Julia Roberts, the script did not allow her to develop her character as much as would have been possible. She seemingly teleported from place to place to place effortlessly, and though this was distracting, it also made the movie somewhat disconnected.
The only relationship that was really explored a little was that between Felipe and herself. Both Stephen and David were pretty sketchily developed. And her Italian tutor was just a sidenote instead of a developed character. Of course, I am comparing the book to the movie which is unwise but I really was disappointed with the character development.
The cinematography was lovely and added to the overall "feel" of the movie. All of the acting was credible although I wanted more from Julia. I do not fault her, I fault the scripting. The music was as eclectic as the story and fitted in quite well. I particularly liked Javier Bardem as Felipe, and Christina Hakim as Wayan, and thoroughly enjoyed Hadi Subiyanto as Ketut.
Overall, my expectations were pretty high for this movie, and I was disappointed. I would, however, recommend it to friends and family. It is a good movie, not a great one. It could have been so much better with just a little more time, even another 20 minutes would have helped. It was not all THAT long.
All in all, the movie was enjoyable and a nice way to spend a very hot afternoon in Phoenix.

I liked the movie for its effect. If you had not read the book it was probably a nice diversion of escape to other places in the world. If you had read the book you would recall the tortured nights of the writer trying to pull her self from the depths of despair. This was missing from the film. The book was a spiritual ride the movie only coasted.

Julia Roberts is always a delight, but overall the movie left me empty. "Eat" lacked the sensuality; "Pray" lacked the inspiration and lessons; and "Love" lacked the heart connection of the book. I am usually very forgiving of movies made from books I have read. Much as I wanted to be swept away, I was not. I found myself wondering when it would be over! A sure sign of its having "missed the boat"!

They rushed the movie version and miscast Liz with Julia Roberts. Soo not like Liz Gilberts persona in the book. I could see a young Meg Ryan or Goldie Hawn or Diane Keaton in the role, you get the type I mean. Even Reese Witherspoon today would have been better. If you didn't read the book, this movie would make no sense to you. It failed to capture the essence of Liz's personality and her quest for God and love. The only actors that fit were Ketut and Felipe, the gorgeous Brazilian boyfriend. I want to see more of him. The plot was disjoint and I think more narration by Liz was necessary to tap into her thoughts. Sorry, thumbs down but love the book and will read it again!

The success of the book, "Eat, Pray, Love" resulted in high expectations for viewers of this movie. I think it is best to go without expectations. This movie is meant to be experienced. It is an inside-out, outside-in kind of experience. What you get from it is really up to you. If you let yourself be "empty" to receive your own insights and to be present with the character of Liz in the movie, I think you will leave "full" and find lots of meaning in the movie. If you go to analyze it, you will destroy the potential that awaits you. I suspect that each viewer will perceive this movie differently. I related to it, and it reminded me that life offers many opportunities to be born anew.
