this movie was entertaing. Not to predictable is always a good thing. Good acting helps carry you through the over 2 hours and love storys that take you into war tend to be great, but i think there was a lack of war action that could of made this movie a classic .80 percent of movies leave you angry with the dumb ending this is deffinitly not one of them. Keira Knightley alone is worth the price of your ticket.

Except for the fact that it was often difficult to understand the dialogue (combination of British accent and too much background noise), both my husband and I like the movie very much. It felt very real and we shared the characters' emotions. While the flashbacks were confusing at times, that is what contributed to it being so thought-provoking. It gave us something to talk about after the movie, trying to sort fact from her fiction. I would certainly recommend this movie.

It seems to me that any time a movie does something different, tries something new, it gets all these bad reviews bashing it. It boggles the mind. This movie is well acted, it is well directed. It had beautiful music and cinematography. And as for the plot... that "ridiculous" use of showing the same scene over again had a purpose. The point of the movie is to see how a mistake could be made by misjudging what you see with your own two eyes. And as for not feeling for a character, I'll say that this is a sad movie. A depressingly so one. Girls likely will prefer it, but even men should be able to see the beauty of tragedy that occurs. Go see it, bring tissues. And never listen to a user review.

Ok, it literally took me 24 hours to digest this movie and what it was REALLY about. Unfortunate thing about this movie was that while the cinematography was beautiful, the delivery was not. It was a rather confusing movie, moving backwards and forwards until the end when you're still left wondering about it as you exit the movie theater. I think they could have made this movie shorter and more concise.

Another masterpiece in cinematography without doubt, if you have seen, enjoyed and understood "out of Africa", "English Patient", "Titanic" and even somewhat "Sweeny Todd" then you will enjoy the craft of filmmaking where attention is asked in all aspects such as music, dialog, and photography. I have been reading a lot of reviews saying that this movie is boring, slow, and a waste of time. I am wondering if we actually saw the same movie. If you think that the movie was boring, then don't bother reading the novel - almost everything is exact from the book. I happened to read the book after I saw the movie, and throughout the novel I could picture the scenes nearly verbatim from the movie. The adaptation is nearly perfect, and really does bring to life the characters that portray this wonderful story. I think some people who went to see this movie did not realize exactly what it was about...I know someone who went thinking it was more of a war story than a love story, and was subsequently dissapointed. The movie is about the passion, love, betrayal, hate, and guilt between the characters. It was made as a piece of British realism, not a cookie-cutter American blockbuster. So don't go in thinking you are getting explosions, carnage, and lots of death - go in with an open mind, expecting a delicately developed plot that accentuates every detail of the period, and draws you into that fateful night in 1935.

Do not go see this movie!! Don't waste two hours of cinemagraphic BS for an ok plot. The story itself is decent, but the long drawn method of delivery is dreadful. Just get on with it!! They could have easily cut out the first 25 minutes of this movie. My wife thought it was ok, but still too long and drawn out. I couldn't wait for it to end. This movie is absolutely horrible from beginning to end. Dont be fooled by the pretentious "defending" of the acting, or music, or cinematography. Those are just code for (coma inducing plot and directing). This film is ridiculously slow, long, and goes no where. Character development is sacrificed for some absurdly misplaced device of repeating scenes to include nothing of substance to the plot. You dont care about anyone in this movie. Once the plot finally does begin to develop, it is abruptly cut off, only to reveal the droll ending, which completes the enormous let down this movie really was. The only people who seem to love this movie were film critics of dubious origin and their pseduo-intellectual wannabe sychophants who delight in pretending to love a movie for its "artistic" value, translation (Mind Numbing Story). Quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen in over 3 decades of enjoying the cinema.

I am so grateful to my high school English teacher who made us suffer through works like"Night Flight", "The Pearl" and other great works of contemporary literature and taught us things like the "stream of conciousness" technique. I had no trouble following this movie. I loved it from the first moment it started.The acting,cinematography, story and locations were wonderful. I wonder how a young girl could play a part like that so convincingly. The end was a complete shock, and I wish people who write reviews would not be spoilers.This is a must see.

This was one of the most diappointing films I've ever seen. My husband and I are avid movie goers. We were looking forward to this movie (especially me), based on the rave reviews it received. What a joke!! Atonement is extraordinarily boring. The editing is terrible, you can't understand half of what the characters are saying, and you don't really care. The scenes switch from past to present constantly and are then repeated with boring, unnecessary details. When the movie ends, you're not even sure which parts actually happened. The critics are ridiculous-but we already know that! And - a Golden Globe for best move?!! Who is paying these people?!! Save your time and money! Don't see this movie.

This movie was as wonderful as I expected. It was a gentle, quiet, moving film that has a wonderful talented cast. The musical scores were impeccable. There were alot of flashbacks in this film so it is not for the easily confused. I would recommend it highly to anyone who has an appreciation for such a film, no shoot em up, bang bang, sci fi moments...just a heartwarming lovely tale of deception and redemption. Bravo to all involved in this masterpiece!

I didn't know what to expect going into this movie. However, I can tell you that this movie is for a very specific type of person. It has forbidden romance, betrayal, and even war. But there was absolutely nothing to balance any of it. The movie's self pitying catalyst has no honor throughout the entirety of the movie and only steps up to the plate to reveal the truth to everyone when she finds out she is going to die herself. This of course is far after anyone that this would have effected has already passed. She admits during the interview of her book "atonement" (what this movie is about) that she fabricated the ending as a "gift" to her sister and her stolen love as it took her till now to actually reveal the truth. The movie left me feeling empty. I go to the movies to enjoy the art of cinema and the wonderful stories that are told. I also enjoy leaving a movie feeling both impressed with the work of the movie and at least some sense of happiness.

After reading several reviews, I was a little apprehensive about seeing Atonement. I was prepared to see a drawn out, boring love story, but I actually didn't feel that the film was boring at all. The film is stunningly beautiful and the acting is top-notch.
As others have mentioned, there is a bit of jumping around in time and the movie doesn't exactly progress in consecutive order at all times, which I found to be unnecessary. Also, I don't think the love story is developed enough. I just didn't feel that attached to the couple. Definitely not sappy enough to be considered an epic love story.

I was a fan of McEwan's book so I was eager to see how the the story would translate to film. I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed -- the film is a different experience than the novel, as it should be, but better yet it was equally heartbreaking. James McEvoy was remarkable (as he often is) and the rest of the cast was excellent. The pace of the movie is more languid than American audiences are used to -- nothing gets blown up after 5 minutes --but the painstaking attention to detail is material to the story so it's worth paying attention. A definite recommendation!

I had high expectations going into the movie but was somewhat dissapointed. It started off slow and went back and forth between the present and the recent past which wasn't necessary in my opinion. It got better in the last 1/3 but by then I lost most of my interest. The ending had an interesting twist which was different, but overall it was just ok. I didn't fall asleep like some people I noticed did who were sitting near me. Wait for the DVD to come out.

“Atonement” was enthralling…the Mansion was absolutely eye catching, and from what I understand, stands as it was seen in the movie…the imagery was hauntingly memorizing, don’t expect it to be anything like Pride and Prejudice. Knightly’s performance was riveting, as the radiant woman she is…her acting was intensely superb…figures loomed out of the shadows, briefly seen faces, and exceptional shades of colors. Once started it moved quickly into dramatically calculating scenes mingled with the shocking understanding, of how one person’s actions/words can affect on the lives of others, for the rest of their lives, was the deeply moving concept that came to life. The true essence of human behavior was captured with expertise and a poignant dismay, in this film. I don’t believe you will be disappointed. Stunningly rich performance by McAvoy, extremely powerful, and the entire movie was startling, held my attention to the end. I would see this movie again and again!

Over the Holiday weekend I went to: I Am Legend, National Treasures and Atonement. I was very disappointed with Atonement. The story had the potential to be a epic love story . Somebody dropped the ball. The movie was terrible. Too many useless scenes that contributed nothing to the movie. Who did the editing? The ending was pitful. Wish I have saved my money and picked another movie.

A stunning movie! The acting was first rate; the direction equally so; the musically score was engaging and even haunting; the story line was unusually good. Another reviewer said this was the most boring movie he had seen. He ought to take up NASCAR.

Over the XMAS break I saw Juno, Sweeney Todd, Charlie Wilson's War & Atonement. Atonement could not hold a candle to any of these other movies. I saw it with my wife & 15 year old daughter. My daughter said it was the most boring movie she had ever seen. My wife said it reinforced to her why she rarerly goes to the movie theater anymore. I was constantly fighting the urge to take a nap the whole movie. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS MOVIE. All the critics must have been drinking the Kool Aid when they assigned lofty ratings to this movie. Or else they are all bought & paid for by the industry.
