The ladies of SATC have outgrown their own stories. It's ludicrous to see these grown women prancing around in the same outfits, with the same mindset, as they did in their 20s. Carrie comes off as a selfish, cranky adolescent -- something she never was in the tv series -- and Samantha's overt sexual aggression is just sad. She survived too much to not be self-confident enough to not have to behave this way. Excess upon excess, 'cause there's nothing else to the story. Time to move on!
This was one of the movies I was really looking forward to this season. Unfortunately it was a major disappointment -- despite terrific special effects, there was no tension or suspense; and I'm afraid the substitution of an ecological crisis for a military one (as in the original) doesn't pack nearly the same punch. Not to mention the fact that Gort is a minor player -- and one of the great lines in all of science fiction is never uttered!! If you want to see this movie, wait for the DVD and rent it.
I was a fan of McEwan's book so I was eager to see how the the story would translate to film. I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed -- the film is a different experience than the novel, as it should be, but better yet it was equally heartbreaking. James McEvoy was remarkable (as he often is) and the rest of the cast was excellent. The pace of the movie is more languid than American audiences are used to -- nothing gets blown up after 5 minutes --but the painstaking attention to detail is material to the story so it's worth paying attention. A definite recommendation!
