What is one of TheMovieRhino's "funnest things" to do? Answer: Seeing, in theater, a well-made, comparably low-budget, quality, inventive, quirky (love that word), original, keeps-you-guessing, well-acted, well-written, well-edited, well-shot ....you know.... movie! Moon fits this description. Immediately jumps into my Top 10 list of best films of 2009. Maybe the Top 5. Rockwell is top notch, Spacey's voice work is perfect (shades of Hal) and kudo's to Director Jones in his big movie debut (son of David Bowie). Please see it in theater if possible.
Johnny Depp is masterful. Is there anything he can't do? Fantastic cinematography, dialogue, editing, pacing....and great acting! Mann does a perfect re-creation of the USA in various atmospheres from the 30's! I have read some harsh criticism of Christian Bale.... but I disagree. Not Bale's best but he is fine as Hoover's first G-man. Open your safe, grab some movie money and zoom down to your neighborhood cineplex. Worth investing the time and money to steal a viewing on the big screen.
I am sure that I could watch 87 minutes of Scrat deal with his acorn-complex....but in this movie....that was about 7 minutes. Scrat and his antics are very funny and I don't seem to grow tired of them. Kind of like Wylie Coyote in days of yore. The rest of the movie often felt slow...and the character dialogue often flat and dull. It seemed an unusual mix of adult humor sometimes inappropriate for kids....and kid humor sometimes too bland for adults. What saves the movie is Scrat, Scrat's troubles & the amazing crystal-clear 3D animation. If the movie UP was an A then Ice Age III is a B-/C+. See it on the big 3D screen and in those slow parts relish the 3D animation!
Michael Bay proves that he is the king of explosions, noise, light, CGI robots and robot fights! He really is good. We can see the moolah spent on this movie right there on the screen! Loved the first 90 minutes for what it was - the ultimate summer popcorn action flick. This movie will bring out the "geeky teenage boy" in all of us! The problem is in the last 60 minutes. The robot fighting, bombs and noise in the third act are like trying to sip water from a fire hose....or eat a 3 layer chocolate cake w chocolate ice cream smothered in hot fudge....or win the hot dog eating contest at the state fair. It is simply "numbing". You are so sensory overloaded you stop caring for the story. Worth seeing on the big screen.
I have never read the book so this is a movie review only. That said it seems apparent the movie took plenty of detours from the book along with a few major re-writes....so say those that have read the book & seen the movie. The movie had a good pace, tight editing, top notch cinematography and great acting by Breslin and Vassilieva! Yes - we are being manipulated and coerced to feel sad, strong emotions - sometimes in a much too direct way. Yes - the acting of Diaz and Baldwin is not as good as we would like. Yes - the story is too pat, a bit too clean and a bit too "Hollywood-ized". All that and it is still worth a theater viewing for all of the positives it is laced with. L'chaim!
With the caveat that one should know the general type of a movie one is going to see....before seeing it.....do not miss O'Horten - if you can take pleasure in small, quirky, visually allegorical movies that use dark and deadpan humor to their best advantage. We enjoyed every minute of O'Horten and were quite surprised by the top notch musical score and the gorgeous cinematography. One of those little gem movies that will be overlooked by many and hard to find for those that might appreciate it. Worth seeking out and making an effort to get see in a theater. Perhaps we will then be inspired to all find our own "ski jumps" and take our "chance" on the downhill run? Bravo O'Horten! Skoal!
Lots of wasted talent here. Mel Brooks and/or Monty Python would do it so much better....or should I say....they did do it better....and by "leaps and bounds"! The funny, worthwhile bits could have been boiled down to fit into a 30 minutes HBO sitcom. Very slow at times with an over-reliance on "male potty humor". I laughed out loud a few times but not near enough for a 100 minute movie. Feels like a film where everyone was trying to collect a quick pay check - hoping they could scurry quickly to something better so this would be forgotten....also quickly. Could be Jack Black's "Ishtar". Come on JB....we know you can do better!
Laughed, snickered and even chortled all through this movie. Is is believable? No. Is it jam-packed with suspense & twists and turns? No. Does it have some unnecessary, over-the-top, distractions occasionally? Yes. So what...I "propose"? Pitch perfect comedic acting by Bullock, Reynolds & Betty White ...throw in gorgeous scenery....season with an excellent musical score....and top it off with several awe-inspiring memorable sight gags perfectly timed (the naked scene, the dog & bird scene, the first notice of deportation scene, the male dancer scene & the dress fitting scene are some examples) and you have the piece de resistance in comedy movies so far in 2009. See it with your honey & prepare to laugh!
A change of pace in the middle of the summer testosterone-packed movie season. Original, funny, thought-provoking, well acted & directed character-ensemble piece that will have you entranced throughout. No weaknesses that I could spot....unless you are under 30 and just have not had enough "life wash over you" yet. Great supporting cast with Krasinski & Rudolph spot-on perfect as the lead characters. Both should be looking forward to long, eclectic movie careers. Kudos to Sam Mendes and the atmosphere he creates in this movie. I especially enjoyed the quiet, non-dialogue scenes with the two main characters. Nice musical score that interacts organically with the film. Tremendously enjoyable tale....well-told. Hey - see it now! Away you go!
Enjoyed the pace and acting in this movie. Travolta, Washington & Turturro - all do an A+ job of acting. That alone makes it worth a theater viewing. Add to this some above average cinematography, editing and pacing and you can add more reasons to see it. This movie just misses a 5th star because of some missed opportunities for emotion, some occasionally bad dialogue, some story improbabilities and an act III that fizzles more than sizzles.....thanks mostly to the "death scene". All in all it is worth a ride. Grab your honey, remind her of the chick flick you saw with her last week and ask for some reciprocity this week. See it.
