The great special effects and about 15 minutes total of fun interaction and dialogue (sprinkled way too lightly throughout this movie) almost enticed me to recommend this flick ...but not quite. Save your theater movie money and rent this one in a couple of months. That way you can fast forward through several lengthy & unfunny diatribes that Ferrell gives in the second half of the film. This movie shows promise in the first 30 minutes and then it seems to rest on it's laurels in Act 2 & Act 3. If they could have condensed the good parts down to 30 minutes and charged us 2/3 less then I would have encouraged all to see it. Rent it!
Raunchy, blue, quirky (boy - I've been using that word in a lot of reviews lately), fast-paced, mystery-comedy that will have your eyes watering along with some loud ha-ha-ing many times in it's quick 96 minutes. Definitely an adult only R rated movie that at times over-does the adult male nudity thing ....but, that said, the chaos and insanity not withstanding, everything gets explained in the end, nobody dies and life lessons are learned. This movie is designed to make us laugh and it succeeds.
No weaknesses in this fictional period piece. Fun and intriguing from start to finish. Perfectly cast with just a dash of quirkiness. Spiced up with the occasional "over-the-top" moment ....but not over done with these "sparkletts". Very enjoyable, if not great, acting, cinematography, musical score, editing, story and ....what fun dialogue. Colin Firth was stand-out great and his persona and dialogue were a hoot - thanks to his perfect timing and delivery. If you are over 30 and have grown just a bit weary of animation, robots, explosions and screaming ....do yourself a big favor and make sure you see Easy Virtue. Your summer movie going experience may be nutritionally incomplete if you miss it!
Most of us will be able to empathize with the premise of this movie. The writing, acting & directing are flawless. My only complaint is the story itself. I wanted a bit more explained....a little more uncovered. Perhaps that was the intent all along. We end up in Solo's shoes - wanting to know more of why we seem to be only witnesses to the inexorable flow of events as the old man character so well played by Red West heads towards his apparent suicide. Savane & West are magnificent. An adult movie for those serious movie buffs that like to mix up their flamboyant summer movie watching with some serious, contemplative cinema. Well done.
Thank you Sam Raimi for returning to the genre that "put the Sam Raimi name on the map" in the movie directing & writing world! Well done sir! Please keep returning to make your special brand of horror movies from time to time (the more often the better). You have been missed. I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish. You kept the whole theater on "it's" toes.... sometimes screeching .... sometimes laughing..... sometimes groaning & gasping & ooooing....but always entranced by the story, editing, pacing and cinematography. What cinematic fun! See this horror flick. It's not a drag. It's a "heck" of a movie!
Here's one more "go see it in a theater" vote for a gorgeous, well-done animated 3D movie! Pixar keeps evolving and getting even better (one wonders how they long they can keep their string of smash successes going?)! This film is safe for kids but has a lot more adult content in it than one would presume. The only caution is the adult theme of death and separation which will perhaps be confusing, maybe even a bit frightening, for some kids under 8 years of age. The PG rating is appropriate. This is a layered, textured, multi-directional story that will allow many viewers to be satisfied in different ways. Visually delicious from every angle. The 3D is enhancing - not forced or distracting. See it & enjoy every bite.
My bride of 32 years, Judi, is the dance aficionado in our house. I thought that seeing this film would be an act of sacrifice & love....on my part. I was wrong. The directors do a magnificent job of weaving the personal worlds of professional Broadway dancers as they fight their seemingly impossible battles to land a dancer's dream role in a Broadway musical...in this case for the musical revival of A Chorus Line. Great insight - well told! We were lucky to also have one of the directors present for our screening and it was a treat to have the director field questions for nearly 30 minutes after the showing. See it in theater while you can!
I love original, small budget, well-done, quirky movies with intricate plots, unusual characters, dark humor, threaded with life lessons....that wrap you up and carry you along down the twists and turns of movie-watching "white water"...and The Brothers Bloom is just such a movie. The acting is fantastic and the editing top notch! I loved all of the surprises and could have watched an entire movie based on any of the primary 8 characters. Who's is not going to ga-ga over Bang Bang...or the eccentric millionairess, played so deftly by Rachel Weisz, who "collects other people's hobbies"? Loved every minute. Good chance this film will be on my top 10 for 2009! See it!
Non-stop action, gritty sci-fi "Mad Max-like" atmosphere and seamless special effects will keep most Terminator-aware movie goers glued to the screen in this 4th chapter in the John Conner saga. The visual effects, music, cinematography and most of the actors are top notch here. Keeping the flick from perfection is the choppy editing and the acting of Christian Bale. For some odd reason Bale has carried his Batman persona & voice into this movie? We would have been better served with a more dimensional & complex portrayal of John Conner. The movie could have been better served with some additional back-story for the under-terminator-educated. Hey - the action was great and the sound work magnificent! Overall a fun ride. See it!
This is a fun, family movie for all ages. Above average comedic acting from Ben Stiller, Amy Adams and, especially, Hank Azaria! It is amazing how many historical characters, in various forms, are "stuffed" into this film....and somehow they all work within the premise. Kudos to director Levy for simply keeping track of everything! Nice editing & pacing...with some "Goldilocks just right" length! Amazing special effects. Only "nit-picky" complaint is I felt a bit numbed by all of the characters and frenetic activity which often felt driven more by a desire to "get them all in" than for story & plot enrichment. Hey - it's a fun family, fantasy extravaganza - so see it and enjoy the spectacle and PG humor. Harmless & fun.
