Hope this Movie is Not Forgotten - See it!

A great "small" movie that, sadly, few will see. Very atmospheric and well-acted. Interesting that this film is available in theaters the same weekend as Angels & Demons because it centers around Catholic Mysticism in Mexico mixed in with criminal underpinnings. The story is fascinating, the cast is great and the story is well-paced. Simon Baker expands his acting chops and does it very well. This is not The Mentalist! The last 30 minutes moves like lightning and is packed full of twists & turns that will keep you off-balance and glued to the screen. Very enjoyable adult suspense thriller! Keeps us guessing right to the last frame! Kudos to the entire creative team!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

In IMAX format this movie gets even better!

In IMAX this 5 star move (see TheMovieRhino's earlier regular movie review) jumps up another notch and gets even better! J.J. Abrams supercharges new life into a dried out & tired iconic legend. The gorgeous cinematography and musical score, combined with tight story telling and editing....along with a great cast and A+ directing by Abrams make magical use of IMAX technology to bring to life, in all it's steroidal splendor, the world of Kirk, Spock & Bones in this magnificent new Star Trek film! Seek out Star Trek at your nearest IMAX and boldly go where we all should be going.....to see Star Trek in IMAX! Pure Fun!

Manage to see this Magical Movie Gem....

I've never been a big fan of Steve Zahn or Jennifer Aniston.....until now. Wow! I did not really "recognize" either of them in this great "little" movie. Aniston looks physically different and it's a great look for her. Her acting is subtle and pitch perfect as she portrays a person who is "doing what is expected" without fulfilling her heart's true ambitions. Steve Zahn is also layered and intriguing as an unworldly dreamer who finds the love of his life and a pathway out of the dreary world he seemed destined to inhabit while on this mortal coil. For some reason these two actors meld perfectly and in this we can credit director Belber. Management "manages" to be thought-provoking, funny, dramatic & suspenseful.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Howard & Hanks Nail This One - See it!

An exciting, well-made, well-acted Gothic thriller. Much better than The DaVinci Code. Action-packed, gripping mystery-suspense tale that will have you mentally trapped with Tom Hanks as he delves to solve the riddles and perhaps stave off massive destruction in Rome. My wife had read the book & I had not. Both of us loved this movie and want to see it again in-theater. Ron Howard & Tom Hanks continue to orchestrate quality high-end cinema! Ewan McGregor gives his best on-screen performance to date. Kudos to all involved!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Taking a Jab at Fighting....

Depending on your general movie preferences & proclivities....depending on your expectations & film acumen....depending on what in a movie creates a feeling of satisfaction for you as a movie viewer....you will generally like or generally dislike this film. This is likely true of most movies....but always more true in the case of the smaller, more subjective ones. The fight sequences are very well done. One can believe the fights are real. Pain is felt. These are mortals slugging it out in a game....as well as life. I enjoyed the street-cred acting & dialogue. The film had a sense of the documentary to it. An adult film worth a viewing in theater or as a rental.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Clean, Enjoyable film with teen idol Miley Cyrus

My bride of 32 years asked that I take her to see "Hannah Montana - The Movie" on Mother's Day. We are mega-movie goers seeing 2 to 4 movies every week in theaters (we like the ambiance of a public theater)...and, to be honest, I was hoping to avoid this flick....believing it would be too "sweet & sugary" for my "movie palette. I was surprised by the quality of this family movie and we both enjoyed it. Miley Cyrus is an above average actress and an even better singer-entertainer. While the film had a message it did not get preachy and therefore the moral of the story had an even greater impact. Recommended for children, oldsters and adults who have not grown too cynical and "sophisticated" to enjoy a good, clean story....well told.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

A Ghost of Movies Past....

....and a faint ghost of movies past at that. Everyone knows this movie before they see it. Truth is - the movie you imagine it is will be far better than the one you will see. Truth is - the movie itself is a narcissistic mess stuffed full of tired cliches (and the movie's primary character is a narcissistic mess who is a walking, breathing cliche). McConaughey plays himself again. You would think this would be somewhat boring which means the paycheck was good. Here's to the idea that we should stop encouraging studios to pay for dribble like this and simply put their millions into better projects. Please skip it.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Star Trek Beams Us All Up in Successful Re-Launch!

J.J. Abrams has succeeded with this movie series re-launch! While we can rest assured there will be some Trekkie's upset with what they will perceive as a rupture in the fabric of established Star Trek mythology ...most of us will be applauding Abram's achievement! This movie is fun to watch & I will go back for seconds (which I rarely do). The story, cast, cinematography, special effects, editing, pacing, sound & music is perfect! What fun to see a movie about such iconic characters breathe life back into them again! I counted at least 10 spontaneous eruptions of well-deserved applause. A perfect meld of nostalgia and the new. Beam yourself into this one as soon as you can. All of your atoms will be glad you did!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Is Anybody There? You Should Be! Don't miss it!

Another small independent movie gem! Too few will see it....but we all should! Jam-packed with great acting all of which is pitch perfect. The story is told on screen without hyperbole & manipulation. We can believe it almost as a documentary. Michael Caine just gets better & better as he ages....like a fine wine....to use an apt but over-used metaphor. A gold star to the cinematographer, director Crowley and his entire team. A really nice contrast film to "clean the palette" after gorging on the typical early summer fare of action movies with their extra helpings of steroidal "sound & visual" gravies oozing from the digital celluloid. Try to catch it at a theater for the full atmospheric pleasure.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Xpected More - Still Worth Seeing

Wolverine just does not match up to the recent spate of comic book superhero movies. IronMan, Batman, HellBoy & even the The Hulk were all better movies. That said there are some redeeming aspects: Hugh Jackman IS Wolverine and he inhabits the character well. The action sequences were exciting and fun to watch - for the most part. The pacing of the movie and the cinematography were above average. The director simply tried to squeeze too much in to this film. Everyone would have liked to have spent more time with Gambit & DeadPool. I give Hood, Jackman & the team an A for effort and a C for execution. This movie was a bit too 2-dimensional for my taste. Worth a theater viewing but keep your expectations on the low side.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
