It was funny and realistic. The actors all did a wonderful job. The two kids were great. The emotions were so genuine. It was nice to see a lesbian couple portrayed just like everyone else. They fight, they get annoyed with each other, they disagree, they even have affairs, but they love each other deeply. This was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time.

The movie does not live up to its trailer or the massive praise given it by the reviewers. The acting and the actors were excellent, but the story was weak. Once the commonness of a lesbian marriage and parenthood was explicated, nothing happened. The daughter goes off to college, the end.

I went to this movie hoping for a change from the usual Hollywood dribble. From the tag line it looked promising. I love Julianne Moore. However, while the plot was promising, the writting was anything but. I had the whole thing written in my head 20 minutes into the movie. The cliches were flying and the on-the-nose dialogue had me rolling my eyes most of the movie. The characters were Hollywood's impression of lesbians not as real as they could have been.

I was very dissapointed in this movie. One would think that the premise of a lesbian family reconnecting with the children's birth father would have been ample fodder for a good plot line and character development. Didn't feel much emotional connection to the characters or the story line. Was a typical story told in a non-typical way... Thought the 'dad' was believable and lovable while the momses didn't connect w/each other or with me. The sperm donor had more depth than mom characters.

This is the first intelligent movie of the summer. It's about time! This is a good story, with interesting personalities, not all of them likable, mixing and mingling in sometimes clumsy ways. An intelligent screenplay, with a story that is not pat and predictable. This is a movie about families. A lesbian couple has birthed and raised two teenage children. The older child, a daughter, is just about to leave to start college. Into this mix comes the biological father, albeit a formerly anonymous sperm donor, of both children. All the characters are rather interesting, with the exception of the son, who is given little to do. There is humor here, too; the wives can be so stilted and feel-good, sweety-goody. This movie is a treat, after all the mindless FX movies. Movie makers, give us a good story, not a CGI sensory assault!

All too often Hollywood attempts to overcome a weak script with great actors and a few jolts to the typical "WASP" viewer. Julianne was great and Annette always a pleasure to watch but we did not need to know their characters enjoyed watching male gay porn, or that CLAY would actually urinate on a dogs head if left to himself. The kids were not just alright, the kids were great actors and made you forget the weakness of the story. Hold out for a better script ladies, you are above this one.

My sister went to see this movie and told me I should go see it. I didn't remember the title from the previews that were shown and that is strange for me. I thought the acting was really quite good. I thought it was interesting how the Mark Ruffalo's character became "the other woman" and his suggestion to leave the relationship which fell on deaf ears and I am really glad it did. Had it not ended as it did, it would have been another attempt to show that same sex marriage is not legit, and I am so glad it did not take that course. Overall, I agree things seemed to move slow at times but the characters and acting engaged me so I was not waiting for it to end.

There were some VERY funny moments in this movie, but overall I found it slow (and it was only 1 3/4 hours.) The cast was terrific and I thought the acting was outstanding, but the plot didn't hold together for me and the pacing was tough. The acting was quite good - especially Annette Bening, and Mia Wasikowska. The script was fairly good. The direction was just fair. The editing was not up to expectations - I would say bordering on poor. The sets, camera work, lighting, sound, and costuming/makeup were good. It was a fairly good movie which moved too slowly and awkwardly at times. The attraction between Ruffalo's and Moore's characters was baffling. Overall I enjoyed the movie. Seemed slow in places, but it was entertaining. Thought Annette Benning and Julianne Moore made their characters very believable.
This was a good movie, but not one I would want to see again.

Excellent film. A fresh take on infidelity. The best scene was when the daughter said "I wish you could have been better". Each character was well defined. Mia is reminiscent of Gweneth Paltrow in looks, acting ability, and presence on camera. I would highly recommend this film.

This movie is funny, fresh, insightful, and poignant; the kind of movie that most studios have decided to stop gambling on in favor of franchise tentpoles. Thank goodness Focus took a chance and we all get the chance to see this wonderful film on the big screen. The performances (especially Julianne Moore and Mia Wasikowska) are exceptional. I urge everyone to go see this film in theaters - not only is it totally worth the price of admission, but a decent box office return will also prove to the studios that there still is an intelligent audience that demands this kind of fare!
