Avatar was tremendously appealing in the way that Star Wars (Episode IV) was when it first came out. That is, it set the new standard for visual effects. As for the plot, it's the hackneyed "scientists are always peaceful and right, while the military is always violent and wrong" storyline. That's why lab monkeys have it so much better than Iraqis. I do hope old Jacob Sully brings some major technological advances to the Na'vi, or we can all expect a sequel where the humans return in force for the unobtainium and the smurf-elves go the way of the dodo. So see the movie in 3-D, but don't bring the kids unless they're either too young to pick up on the slightly veiled message or old enough to recognize it as propaganda.

Almost 3 hours ?????? It didn't seem like it. My wife and I wanted more. Totally enjoyed the movie, 3D effects and characters. Sure the plot has been used in many movies and the outcome was predictable. But, we watch movies to be entertained "in the moment" and NOT to find fault. We almost went back to the ticket booth to watch it again. WE WILL SEE IT AGAIN IN 3D AND GET IT WHEN IT COMES OUT ON DVD.

"Lord of the Rings" battle scenes, "Star Wars" gizmos, and "Dances with Wolves" theme--I've seen this movie before. And it was too long. I felt like James Cameron kept it going so he could get his money's worth out of the special effects he paid for. Great Visual Graphics and 3D effects. Reminds you of the old kids cartoon movie "FERN GULLY" Same theme, but instead of small fairies it was giant Avatars. End was predictable in the first 30 minutes. All in all my wife and I enjoyed the movie, first time we sat for 2.5 hours and didn't get up for bathroom or more popcorn. Get there early for a good seat--very crowded even at 10:30am. OZ

This is the most monatonous movie we have ever seen. Hours of shooting and mayhem and no story to speak of. One dimensional characters and special effects that are just Transformers brought to life. We went for the 3D and found very little of it.

We saw the movie in 3D, which I highly reccommend if you are going to see it. The effects were great! I flinched more than a few times as things came flying "off the screen" at me.
The characters are real and loveable and I found myself connecting to them well before the end of the movie.
This is definitely NOT a young children's movie. I enjoyed it as an adult, but I think a young child would be scared by some of the intense war scenes and violence and loudness. There's no real sexuality or profanity, so from that standpoint it was child-appropriate.
I highly recommend this movie- best one I've seen in a long time!! Definitely see it in 3d!!

I viewed this movie two times in 3D and will purchase the DVD as soon as it becomes available. The second time I watched the movie was even better than the first. It seemed believable even though it was an animation! The storyline was realistic: there were trust issues throughout, danger , new learning, beauty, and a reason to fight. My only concern was at the beginning of the IMAX was that the bass was so strong that the it sounded like an earthquake many times! The movie was just the right length and my children, 6 and 9, enjoyed it, transfixed throughout the movie.

So the story line is familiar: an outsider becomes a part of the clan and ends up rejecting his previous life for a new one. But Avatar takes it to a new level with another world and hi tech scenes. Stunning 3D movie!! The 2:50 hours were over in a blink. It's a journey into a new world and I love it! It looks so real and the 3D makes you feeling you are right there. What I didn't like is the way that Jake "solved" the conflict by fighting back. Even with the support of all animals it can be only a temporary solution and it cost so many lives. If that metal is soooo valuable, you can bet that more soldiers will be send from Earth to get it. So... maybe there will be a next part in 2 years :-)

This is the best Fern Gully remake since Fern Gully. Same story, same overdramatic critical plot points (more believeable in a cartoon). Phenomenal visuals and effects. And the lead lead Navi female was great (get it, get it, Navi...like Navajo?? - yes a bit heavy handed). Best performance by a Computer in a humanoid role tis year. A lot of dumb stuff. But the visuals and the creatures made it all worth it. Fun movie. Great is some technical ways and some imagination. Fern Gully had a better script, though. And much better music!

I loved the movie and was captivated more than I had expected by the story! The 3D scenery was beautiful and creative. I had a hard time believing that all of the movie was animated - the "people parts" were so realistic. This movie was awesome. May have been a little slow in the story at times but thats okay because it just meant more unbelievable 3-D Special Effects and Sounds. I am sure I feel the way kids felt when they first saw Buck Rogers...or the first Star Trek episode....again I can say over and over how cool this movie was...but just go see for yourself.

All I can say is WOW!!!! I honestly didn't know what to expect. This movie is absolutely one of the BEST Sci-Fi flicks of all time. The special effects ROCK! This is a must see!!

I don't know how this movie is going to be topped, without a holo-deck. I've never had "my breath taken away" until now. This movie is enhanced by the IMAX-3D experiance and if there is no other movie you see for the next five years...see this one. I think the story complements the visually stunning bar that James Cameron has set...it has everything a movie lover like me desires. Although beware when the credits roll you will have to pull yourself back from this out-of-body experiance.

I was amazed it was visually stunning you felt as if you were in the middle of their world. I wasn't sure how the computer generated figures were going to work but they were totally believable you actually forgot and thought they were actors.
