Without a doubt, one of the most gorgeous movies I've ever seen. 3D is recommended, by the way.
Cameron has created a $500 million allegory about the wastefulness of human nature, and if you can overlook that irony, and his racism, sexism, his ham-fisted social messages, and his propaganda, you will actually enjoy this gorgeous movie.
Think "Dances With Wolves" in the 22nd century - on another planet, with aliens, and 3D glasses.
Try to bring some childish wonder to the viewing, and you will be riveted to your seat. As far as ALL MOVIES go, I'd give it 3 stars. As far as Sci-fi movies go, it gets 4.5 stars, I think. The effects are bloody amazing. Enjoy!

Wow.It was fantastic. Visually stunning. 3D was magical. Plot/character wise, it was nothing you've not encountered before in other films - reminded me of a western, or Zulu Dawn or Custer's Last Stand all rolled into one. It is woven together very well. The film picks up in the middle of a very complex situation. Backstory is implied, but you get it. Completely. The mark of a story well-told. What I especially liked about this is no cursing, no graphic s*x - the kind of thing a family with older kids could enjoy together. Not for little ones under, say, a mature 8 or 10. Lots of toothy clawed creatures and violence - fantasy violence, but against characters you're emotionally tied to, so could be too intense for younger kids.

This is the first movie that did not leave us feeling like we just had our money taken. With the prices of the movie, the popcorn and drinks, Honey I we went all out on this one, and, felt good about spending, for it was well worth it. I am glad that I went to see it so I know what it was. I found it entertaining but rather simple and predictable. When I went home Matrix Revolution was on and I couldn't help but think that The Matrix was a far better movie and Avatar rang of the same idea; body connected to other body that can do amazing things. My 34 year old son and his wife liked Avatar enough to go back to see it twice. It had some thought provoking aspects and the concept of the other world was quite beautiful to behold. not much new though really.

Like the rest of the reviews the story had alot of different important parts that had to be put together in under 3 hours. The ending was short when it came to what happened to all groups..The Na'vi and the x Marines The Scientists and the big company and their stories that unfold which were all pretty good. I was expecting a role-playing game type movie, pleasantly surprised that the movie was full of action in the two 'realities' of the story. The film was visually stunning. I enjoyed the whole experience. 3-D has certainly changed from the 1950s. However, after seeing Avatar yesterday, a friend asked if I thought the film is racist. I answered, "No." For me, the film brought to mind the concept of the "other." I am most familiar with this idea in feminist studies. But human history is littered with examples of one culture (that presumes itself to be superior) dominating, changing, or destroying another culture generally in the pursuit of wealth, territory, or power. I thought Avatar celebrated the value of the "other" rather than denigrating a culture.

I've always loved action/adventure movies, and this movie also had such a poignant human side that was a real surprise. I took my whole brood of kids (and 2 grandkids) to see it and we all loved it. We had a ball with the 3d glasses, too, which made the experience fun as well as entertaining. I'm going to go see it in IMAX now! James Cameron has sure done it again. What's next Jim? Can't wait!

Went to see Avatar expecting to see state of the art effects. Mission accomplished. Saw things I had never seen before. Loved how everything just came together as the film went on. As I was watching the movie, another film that I had seen a few years ago came to mind and I couldn't help but thinking Dances with Wolves, with special effects. Thats not to take away from James Camerons vision, which was spectacular, but I kept thinking about this other movie the whole time.

If you like science fiction and great special effects. This is the movie for you. I really enjoyed it and would definetely buy the dvd even if I couldn't watch it in 3d. It's basically a modern day cowboys & indians movie as far as the story line goes. But it is well done and I would recommend it to a friend.

I am not very impressed. I have seen better 3D effects. Storyline was weak (predictable). In the web 2.0, Avatar is not a new concept, virtual life on internet (e.g. second life) is an old concept now, so watching avatars in a theater was not an earth shattering experience.
Overall, average movie!
