The film was visually stunning. I enjoyed the whole experience. 3-D has certainly changed from the 1950s. However, after seeing Avatar yesterday, a friend asked if I thought the film is racist. I answered, "No." For me, the film brought to mind the concept of the "other." I am most familiar with this idea in feminist studies. But human history is littered with examples of one culture (that presumes itself to be superior) dominating, changing, or destroying another culture generally in the pursuit of wealth, territory, or power. I thought Avatar celebrated the value of the "other" rather than denigrating a culture.
