The story line in this is unoriginal, and you know 10 minutes into it how it's going to end. If you've seen Dances with Wolves, it's basically the same thing. BUT....this movie is still worth seeing just because of the beautiful imagery and 3D. It's a visual masterpiece, but don't expect to get a good plot out of it.

My wife, sister and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. We saw it in 3D but it would have been a great film to watch without it. The plot was pretty conventional but with enough of a story to keep a viewer interested in more than just the special effects. It is here that James Cameron really excelled.

Don't see this movie for any in-depth plot, see it for the viewing experience because you have not seen anything like it! The seamless way that the real characters interact with the "computer-generated" avatars and/or other creatures is fantastic! You really are transported to another world (note: this assumes you are viewing the Real 3D version, not 2D). This is a significant milestone in movie making and viewing.

Here's a movie I thought I might enjoy, especially the 3D effects. As it turns out that was the least important part of it. What a thrill to be transported to another world for close to 3 hours! I fell in love with the tall blue people and their magnificent planet Pandora. I wish everyone could see this movie on the big screen and fall in love the way I did.

"Avatar" is visually stunning and makes very good use of 3D projection, but the story is ridiculously simple and derivative. It borrows from "Dances with Wolves" and from the older white-man-with-Indians film "A Man Called Horse." (I was half expecting to see Jake strung up by his pectorals at his big join-the-People ceremony, but no such luck.) The pterodactyl riding seemed to be borrowed from "Dinotopia." And the helicopter attack on Hometree was straight out of "Apocalypse Now." Perhaps there is nothing new in the genre except really cool special effects.

Story: If you liked Dances with Wolves you'll like this. The story is reasonably solid and will keep you engaged. This is not a kids film. Weaver was a great surprise but Ribisi has a small roll that doesn't stretch his abilities.
Tech: Real3D: Cameron didn't over use the 3D which was great. Too often it is fatiguing on the eyes because it's artificially TOO 3D. As Vistavision was to movies in the 50's to counteract TV, Real3D is that special "something" that compels you get off the couch and go out and pay $12 to see it "better". DigitalCinema is projected at 24 frames-per-second. In 3D that's only 12 frames per eye. So it can get "strobe'y"

For a James Cameron flick, it was quite the disappointment. Definitely not the epic film most people make it out to be. The plotline was rehashed and unoriginal.
That being said, the visuals were brilliant. Good for a few hours worth of entertainment. So if you don't mind realizing that you already know the ending, 5 minutes into the movie, then go see it!

...and wants to see it again. I have to admit I was a bit worried about bringing him initially (mainly due to the 3 hours in a theatre), but only a couple of times did he ask, "how much longer," and they were mainly at the loves scenes.
If you do this with you child, make sure you explain to him or her the difference between reality and movies, and have your child reiterate back that they understand the difference.
Some swearing, and themes could be confusing for someone that young, but we went to an early show, so people didn't mind me whispering to him at some moments that could be confusing
Oh, I enjoyed it as well, and it is one of the more beautiful movies I have seen.

From the graphics to the acting, you can just tell James Cameron was passionate about this film. There are many things to keep your interest in this movie. I did enjoy it but I am always concious of Hollywood's version of what society should think and reflecting their opinions. I have seen this movie on a IMAX 3-D screen in Chicago and I also saw it on a standard small teeny tiny screen at Marcus Theatres. Why oh why aren't they showing 3-D movies on the UltraScreen? I took my son to this movie with an expectation of it being pointed more to kids. Although my 11 year old son loved it, this is a movie that covers all the bases. I was more than pleasantly surprised that it had adult story/plot appeal as well. The 3-D format was very well done, and managed to immerse me in what would probably have been a less than believable movie. Some scenes were too cartoonish, like the chanting natives circled around the special tree, but almost all of the movie seemed believable because of the 3-D effects. A note to any holdouts: You have to see this movie in the theater. I’m not sure if the 3-D effects would be anywhere near as believable even on a large screen HD TV.

I took my grandchildren ages 10 & 14 ( youngest female). I had friends tell me that it was a must see in 3D - they had seen it both ways. I was also warned about the motion sickness so my granddaughter and I both took motions sickness pills before the movie so we had no problems. The story was a little shallow but with the 3D, beautiful scenery, etc. made a great movie. I didn't care for some of the language in it, but at least that was minimal.

awesome. The special effects were amazing. i loved that the movie honored the oneness that we all share with nature i believe it is a good message to get out to the world. To preserve life and not damage it..

The visuals are incredible, but it's the story that seals the deal. Don't buy into this nonsense that it's "Fern Gully" remade. The story is incredibly well-told and the world is completely original. I will see it a third time soon.

The plot, the story line and the acting were all incredible. The graphics were absolutely amazing. An absolute must see at the theater in 3-d! This is the only movie I have ever seen that I cannot think of a single little thing that I would change. In my opinion a perfect movie. See it over and over!
