The visual effects were amazing to say the least. And I'm confused by the reviews that said there is no storyline...it's ALL story line. A very clear environmental message...shoved down your throat a bit...but a good one. I was actually surprised at how little action there was...but the action scenes at the end were well worth the wait.
I do think the main military villain played his part WAY over the top and he's the only thing we didn't like about the movie. James Cameron said every single thing came from his imagination alone, and when you really look at all the amazing little details that's one active imagination!!!! We would see this movie again for sure.

Although I initially was not interested in this movie, and waited for more than month to see it, it was really wonderful. It was more than 2 1/2 hours long, yet it kept my attention the entire time. In fact, I would see it again. It was stunningly beautiful. The graphics were amazing. I took my son, who is 11, and he loved it too.

The Good:
The planet of Pandora was stunning. The colors of their world at night were breathtaking. The Pandoran people were beautiful. Great storyline of how we should not squander our own natural resouces and then try to steal others'. The 3D was pretty good although I have a hard time seeing it in 3D with my eye prescription.
The Bad:
1 hr 45 min into the movie I started getting bored, but it picked up again. I was disappointed with S Weaver's acting - was really fake for her. The military bad guy was a bad actor.

There's no denying the graphics in 3D are amazing. It's incredible. I liked the movie mainly for this reason. The storyline, however, is basically Dances with Wolves meets Ferngully but with blue people. It's not all the original, and get kind of hokey in parts. That said, I'd recommend it for the "wow" factor.

Besides being too long, did anyone else notice scenes in this movie that were also in Michael Mann's "Last of the Mohicans"? One of the leaders even had the voice of Wes Studi, the villain in "Mohicans." Sigourney Weaver's acting was just fair and the military villain's acting was over the top. Toward the end of the movie, the battle went on and on. I thought it would never end.

I've scene this movie 3 times. The first two times I saw it 2D(tried for 3D but it was sold out both times). The movie was excellent in 2D. Loved it. I really wanted to see it in 3D but couldn't bring myself to sit through it for a 3'rd time, no matter how good it was. Plus a couple people mentioned that 3D was good, but probably not all that different than 2D.
How wrong they are!
I'm extremely glad I saw it again tonight in 3D! Take the advice from someone who has scene both 2D and 3D. 2D is great, but 3D is sooo much better! I was skeptical at first, I'm a true 3D believer now!

I have seen many 3D movies but Avatar is the first 3D movie that I have ever seen that demonstrates the way filmmakers should film in 3D. You will not find cheese 3D effects. What you will find is the 3D technology utilized in a way as to immerse you the viewer in the world of Pandora. You feel part of the story. Real life is 3D and that was the goal with Avatar. To bring the world of Pandora alive and it worked. Note to all directors in the world: If you want to film in 3D watch Avatar and learn.

This movie was exceptional. The story line was excellent, it really put the message out there for all who is destroying the earth. Nature is the force behind humans living a healthy and long life. There is NO doubt that this is a 5 star movie.The effects are the best I have ever seen and VERY believable.Story was predictable but who cares!! We were LOVING this movie despite the generic political undertone. You know big corporate is evil and greedy & the military are gun happy morons. However, during the last third of the movie the direct references to Bush like the evil, texas accent marine saying "Shock & Awe" just pushed my buttons a little too much. With 2009 clothing, props, etc., and tired old Bushisms, like, "We will fight terror with terror," this was just a tree-hugging, left-wing, save the planet Bush Bash. One star is for the 3D, but the plot, script, and political message, "We don't have any green left on our planet," is 0 star material.

Disappointing all in all. Incredible technology used to tell a comic book story with a trivial good versus evil plot presenting an over-simplified Hollywood apologia for how the Native Americans were brutally done away with by the European conquerors. At least this time the natives win, which is, itself, a lie. The Natives don't win these kinds of things. -- Hollywood can't figure out how to make a high tech movie that does not involve super bad guys killing good guys then getting killed. -- The 3-D is a novelty but may be pure "wow" factor that will be a fad. Time will tell.
