Having seen the promo clips, I wasn't planning to go to this movie. But the critic and user reviews were so high I really thought this movie would be something special. It wasn't. I saw the 3D version that cost 50% more at the theater and was totally unimpressed by the 3D effects. They are no better than movies doing this 40 years ago. There is no connection with the characters at all and the story line is predictable with scenes that go on way too long. I'll be skipping the likely Avatar 2 sequel.

Special effects were very good, but story line had so many holes in it.
Also, 3-d wasn't all that definitive and myself and my kids got tired of wearing the glasses for almost 3 hours.

Though the story itself may not be new (think David vs. Goliath, or any underdog movie), the "re-imagining" and "re-telling" of it is literally out of this world. Get ready to experience the movies as they were meant to be experienced. The planet of Pandora steals the show, and one could watch 4 hours of film and still be captivated by her. I personally thought this movie was very good (but maybe 4.5 stars instead of all 5). The main purpose of this movie was to take you on an adventure through a very creative and beautiful fantasy world. The plot is a fairly simple man vs. nature story, even though this one has an extra little twist on truly being in touch with nature. The imagination and scenery of the world is really where the movie excels.
I would also recommend the 3D version if you're willing to pay the couple extra bucks; and get over wearing the dorky looking glasses. It isn't a jump out in your face movie, but the 3D look adds a cool depth to everything.

I acually treated my whole family (x5 tickets) to this movie and I'm on a budget, but what a great experience! I do not regret spending the money at all because it was completely worth it. I was fully entertained. I was afraid it would turn into some weird blue people cheesy chick flick and put me in a bad mood for spending my money and wasting my time waiting in line for seats. I took a 14 year old who said it was the best movie of his life. And I thought it would be a liitle much for the 11 year old, especially in length, but he stated it was better than Transformers. It was very realistic (for Science Fantasy) and believable characters. Great story line and even a touch of humor.

Very entertaining film - I was afraid it would not live up to all the hype... but it did. Interesting undertone of enviromental issues but not too underhanded. Other reviews compared it to "Dancing with Wolves". i agree. In addition, the native americans also believed in only taking from nature what you can use. I hope this does increase the debate regarding Corporte profits with out any concern for long term effects. I also watched "Food, Inc." this weekend and the message of Corp greed is very clear.

Amazing virtual experience. I felt as if the movie was being filmed through my own eyes, instead of me actually watching the movie. The dimension layers puts you right in the movie. The story is riveting, with multiple love stories interwoven. Love of God, creation, opposite gender, fellow man, work, self, all are beautifully written into the movie. There is a great history lesson, acted out before your eyes of how American Indians were probably viewed and most certainly treated in this country.The action, and drama are really like icing on the cake for this incredible journey.

This movie's story was as fantastic as it's special effects. It's a must see on IMAX 3D. It was 2 hours 40 min worth of pure pleasure and you didn't want it to end! GO SEE IT for a real treat to the senses, intellect, and emotions!

James Cameron did it again. The movie lived up to all its hype. The 3D technology was extraordinary, the story was well written, and acted. Combine all of these three aspects of a film with an oscar winning director, and you got yourself a blockbuster of a movie. James Cameron provided us once again with a movie that stretches the boundaries of film making that you are sure to be entertained. The film was visually mesmerizing through the world, the creatures, and the battle sequences. You won't be disappointed.
