You have to see this in 3-D! The effects are so cool and not in your face. It did 't even seem like a nearly 3 hour movie because there was always something to keep your attention. Our technology is amazing to create all the scenes. So much to see that I want to go see it again. Good job!

I really enjoyed this movie. It has a fast pace so the time flew. The best part was the visual aspect. But the story was ok too. It kept you interested enough in the characters to want to know what would happen and all the while you're watching the amazing images on the screen. Be sure to see it in 3D

I had no problems with this AMAZING movie. I went in not expecting anything and was then reminded of why I go to the movies. I was totally immersed in the movie the entire time and I'm ready to go see it again. The CGI animation was very believable-- I never thought for a moment that it was fake. True, their was a couple points in the movie where the lead actor's Australian accent slipped in... and their was a couple spots where they could have edited the plot changes more smoothly, but who goes to the movies looking for this kind of stuff? The movie was worth every penny. I was truly blown away.

I had heard rumblings of Avatar being great on cuttting edge cinema-technology but less accomplished on the story-line. I saw the movie yesterday... and not only very much enjoyed the technicolor 3D but the story as well. It was amazing to me that the spiritual concepts and motivation that the movie rests on pertain to "Mother" Planet that nurtures, reverence to all creatures, our ancestor angels, and developing our own inner intuition. The movie is so deeply spiritual that it may challenge the appreciation of those that are not there yet. The setting was simply beautifully created and the story very moving. Truly I am amazed that the movie runs so deep!

As a SiFi fan I enjoyed the movie tremendously. The animation was exceptional. The story kept me interested the entire time. BUT– the story line was rather predictable – tech bad guys, good natives; hero gets girl, etc. Seen it, read it all before – on the level of teenage SiFi. What disturbed me the most was the 3D. Because we didn't sit in the correct place in the theater, the background (especially in the human scenes) kept visually coming forward so that I couldn't correctly focus. Also, often the type was out of focus as well. Would I see it again– you bet. But not the greatest film I've ever seen.

Just like the first Star Wars movies raised the bar for special effects, this movie did the same. There was no discernible line between animation and live action. I highly recommend seeing it in 3D. Mr. Cameron eschewed most of the "this is a 3D movie" tricks and just used the medium to immerse his audience in a different world. The entire set was created by a team of artists. What an unbelievable tip of the hat to creativity. This is the first movie since the first Star Wars trilogy that I would go see in the theater a second time.

By the end of the first hour, I was wishing it was over, but because of the excellent visuals, I stayed to the bitter end. Even the amazing visual effects could not save this movie, ploddingly slow and utterly predictable. The preachy sci-fi "message" failed on 2 levels: as a clumsy metaphor for America's multiple occupations in distant lands, and as an inchoate call-to-nature and a vague pangea-like spiritualism. A great disappointment.

We were debating between Nine, Up in the Air and Avatar and chose the latter for the 3D effects. The scenery was fabulous and story line was good, a little predictable but not boring. My only complaint was the casting of the lead character who was supposed to be a US Marine, but his Australian accent kept slipping in. Wish James Cameron would have given an novice US actor a chance.

I would rate this a great popcorn movie with a couple of negatives, mainly length. 2 hrs and 40 mins is a long time to sit. The story is not original, it borrows from other sources,the dialogue is awkward, especially in the beginning when used for exposition. Unattainium? Or whatever they called it.. a lame plot device as motivation. Enough negatives - CG was unsurpassed. Experiencing the world of the Navi was like being in a Natl Geographic thrill ride on another planet. These features alone make it worth the price of the ticket. The alien world was exciting and interesting and 3D really enhanced it. Suffer through the story to experience the wonderful visuals - it's worth your time. A new bar has been set for special effects in movies.

It was a little long, difficult for younger children to sit through, but none the less enjoyable for the whole family. There is some strong language that may not be suitable for children but then again it is PG-13. The 3-D was excellent. The story was easy to follow as well.

My wife was not at all interested in seeing this moview but we have a tradition on Christmas night to see a movie as a family with our grown children. She was raving about it as we were walking out. I think this goes to top of the list of effects and sci-fi. You never for a moment think this is a long movie as the effects and story just glue you to your seat. To start, the 3D to me was just incidental. When they made the effort, it was amazing. But it doesn't make or break the movie.
The storyline is delightful, and I'm embarrassed as an adult to say this, but the character development was excellent. The green message or nation-building (or both) message is obvious.
This is not really a child movie - the language and war scenes, etc. The battle scenes are too long.
But my husband and I enjoyed this immensely and would recommend it.

This movie was spectacular in a literal sense. The 3D animation and action was superb. Both my buddy and I agreed it felt we were in the jungle sometimes. If something happened to make us regress socially to bulldozing natives and ignoring biotech it was not explained. We've had slant drilling for decades now and they should have been able to mine that rock from miles away without the aboriginal people knowing it. Weapons systems and aircraft were almost at current tech level. That was a real ball-dropping issue for us sci fi guys. Overall very good experience and I recommend it but set aside any need for a sensible plot and cogent sci fi and prepare to be preached to. Very much like Pocahantas on steroids.

The 3D and special effects were amazing. The plot was predictable. And its refreshing for the "Indians" to defeat the "Cowboys". The beauty of this alien world was breathtaking and has found a place in my visual memory. If it doesn't make you question the rampant destruction of our own natural world for greed and profit, then you must be brain dead.

This was a very action packed fun movie. The visual effects were very creative and beautiful. Great story line and kept even the interest of my 6 year old. Only negative to say is the movie is very long.

As I titled this review, I realized Cameron had borrowed from many past movies to create the plot and provide the dialog, and not always in the best way. ("We're not in Kansas anymore" - are you kidding?) Nonetheless, his movie is a cornucopia of color and panorama, and for this is worth seeing. The masking of boundaries between human and avatar is excellent, which makes the avatars more real. The 3D effect is not intrusive, and would probably be even more effective in IMAX. My ultimate test for a 2 hour and 40-minute move was passed - I did not look at my watch even once.

While the graphics and effects were OUTSTANDING, the storyline disappointed me with the "environmental" feel to it. It "felt" like we (human race) are yet again the bad guys for not being more in-tune with our environment.
I did love the love story! :)
