I have seen this movie twice; once in a local movie theater and once in IMAX 3D. Either way, it is a must see if you are a fan of this genre. I have no doubt that this will become a classic. I took 5 people with me to the 3D experience and they were all enthralled with the movie and the experience.
Please do not be distracted by those who read political or religious motives into the movie--enjoy it as a movie. We should all appreciate the planet we inhabit and what is wrong with respecting our neighbors, the plants and animals and generally being good stewards?
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Visually the movie is fantastic. I got lost in the world of trees, creatures, characters, colors, etc, until the plot started to kick in.
There is plenty of anti-american sentiment here. You can't help but think of our marines beating the less developed people to a pulp while you watch this, or how we're pretty environmentally destructive as a society. I actually didn't have a problem with this though.
My problem comes that the story is a bit childish & simple. I must admit some aspects of it I did enjoy. Seeing a people and planet all connected to each other in a deep way resonated with me.
I've had a tough time rating this. I was so enthralled at some points that I can't rate it low, but I do wish the plot had a bit more bite.

Five stars on the awesome 3D scenery and one star on the worn out plot. That averages three stars overall. The actors did great, but the script was predictable and there were no surprises, other than the spectacular special effects. I recommend this as a watch once movie just for the experience.

Too Long? No Way.
Special Effects? World Class.
Story Line? Very Good.
Hats off to Mr. Cameron. The best sci-fi movie I've ever seen. This is from a Star Trek/STar Wars Mega-fan. IMAX/3D is the only way to see this movie!
We are going back for seconds very soon.

I loved it, as did my husband and 26 year old son. Most definitely have to see it in 3D, as the affects were awesome. I loved the plot, as it shows what can happen to a civilization like ours if we don't take care of what we have now! Taking what isn't ours is not the answer.
This is a movie that I would go see again in the theaters. I've never gone to see a movie for a second time, but I would pay to see this one again!

Good Sci-Fi. - -3hr - long movie. No matter, 'cause I would see it again. One almost becomes like JakeScully and 'leaves the body for another'.
This movie has thought provoking undertones in the message - the conquering of such a peaceful nation - -is not something I'd like to promote. There was also the message that the humans carbon-print had already destroyed their planet. I found one good new thought here- - maybe it will teach us not to think 'kill the aliens' at the first encounter.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

With an engaging story and characters you'll grow to love, this is a fantastic movie-going experience. Expert use of 3D adds depth and really brings the scenery and action to life without coming across as a cheap thrill that you might expect from a Disney World 3D muppet show. IMAX is, as always, breathtaking.

James Cameron is a mastermind and his latest journey to the heart of humanity begins in a distant planet known as Pandora. Although I did see the film in 2-D and was thoroughly impressed, the IMAX experience trumped that effort and felt almost surreal at times. Characters, nature, exotic locales all come to life in breath-taking sequences that feel akin to an epic sci-fi roller-coaster. Not only do I recommend this to the casual moviegoer but also to those who have seen Avatar in 2-D. You will not regret it. Bravo James Cameron!

I really liked the movie, but I enjoyed it more the first time I saw it in the standard 3-D version. I ended up in the second row at the IMAX. HORRIBLE. Instead up trying to pack as many people in as they possibly can fit at 14 bucks a head, they need to rip out the first 5 rows of seats, so that nobody ends up staring up from the bottom of the screen as people walk in front of you to go to the concession stands. Horrible. The next time I can't get a decent seat, I'm going to leave and ask for a refund.

This was our first experience in an Imax theater and this was a great movie to get started. The visual effects were very impressive and the 3D technology really enhanced the experience. The plot was somewhat predictable, but still very enjoyable. If you are going to see Avatar, spend the extra $ and see it in 3D.

In short, paying to see this in IMAX vs Digital 3D didn't justify the cost.
The first 2 visits I saw this in Digital 3D, 3rd time was here in IMAX. The IMAX film version had nice high action scenes with no blur, clearer 3D.
Comparing it with the Digital 3D, I was disappointed in the lack of 3D feeling but could have been because of sitting 3/4 from the screen in IMAX. The film was quite darker, the blacks were really black and dark and held no contrast. The colors felt less vibrant and full in IMAX. Also the IMAX glasses were huge and dug into the side of my head, fixed width. It's still a great movie, just had a much better experience in Digital.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The most immediate reaction to this movie is, "Wow that's pretty". Story is classic invasion of native's world for resources. Man eventually falls in love with native culture.
The 3D is not used as a gimmick. It is used to submerge the viewer in the atmosphere of the world to great effect.
IMAX is definitely recommended. We saw it on Digital IMAX. Now we want to see it on a true IMAX screen. The visuals are that amazing.
Highly recommended.

The story is passable, the acting is good enough, the social commentary and agenda is terribly annoying, and the CGI is impeccable. This movie is a work of art, and certainly worth seeing. It may even be worth seeing again. There was not one moment in the entire movie when I thought, "Hey, that's CG." The 3D left a little bit to be desired, though. Some of the previews did a better job of using the 3D than the movie.
Overall, I give it two thumbs up. It's huge, loud, and epic. If you go purely to be entertained, you won't be let down. This is one of those movies you'll kick yourself for not seeing in the theater.

3-D was what made the movie worth sitting through, however, it was entirely too long. A movie for children and Sci-Fi afficionados. Certainly not on the level of "Titantic" or even "Alien".
I find it absurd that there is a warning about smoking in this film and the Sigourney Weaver character is so interested in preserving an envirionment and a civilization, but cannot control her smoking habit.
I doubt I would see this film twice.

From a plot standpoint, it's "Dances with Wolves" in OuterSpace, which is fine, but not great. From a visual standpoint, it's brilliant and worth the price of admission.
My word of caution - Showcase Cinemas in Buckland Hills advertises Imax 3D. It's 3D, but the screen is smaller than my local theatre and the sound is weak. See it at a real Imax theatre somewhere or just a regular digital theatre. Don't waste the trip to this ripoff!

This is one of those movies that becomes totally absorbing when seen in IMAX 3D! Then casting was well done, the special effects were fantastic, and the acting was perfect. This is an adventure, a love story, a fantasy, and an action movie all rolled into one. It is thought provoking, and raises an attack of social conscience with regards to man's propensity for greed at all costs. As in so many biblical stories... it exemplifies the strength in belief in a higher power, and the unity of spirit. A feel good movie!

I was impressed with Avatar. I walked into the theater a little skeptical because of all the hype it was getting. But it did not disappoint. The plot was easy to follow and the world James Cameron created for this film was pure eye candy.
