This is not a very good movie. Larry David is the central character, and as such he is not much different from the obnoxious lout from "Curb Your Enthusiasm". That character was a bit socially clueless in his obnoxiousness. But here he is aggressively, intentionally, and monotonously obnoxious. Once again Woody Allen writes a character that is an aging male to whom a beautiful young woman is (very) improbably attracted. Woody, get help! The movie's rewards are fine performances from the other persona, especially Evan Rachel Wood as the sweet innocent Mississippi runaway, and also Patricia Clarkson and Ed Begley, Jr. as her parents. But the main character is overdrawn and rude beyond believability.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Brilliant writing, directing and acting! There are so many parallels to our own lives it makes you laugh, and it’s good to laugh at yourself. The main character might seem a lot sardonic, but so what. Watching his audience communication, we are introduced to the differences and similarities between his life and our lives, and somehow are able to see “the big picture”. What may seem as unacceptable takes a completely different direction to where it may just all be totally acceptable. One drawback is the dialogue just kept rolling along while the audience was still guffawing; missed dialogue. It’s a light-hearted story about life and lives, with which we can associate. It comes down to “whatever works”. It’s a cliché!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The default neurotic condition of man, ever-present in all Woody Allen movies, holds sway in this new flick as well. I enjoyed the breaking down of the 4th wall barrier and Larry David's negative analytical rants as he stared at us through the camera and the big screen. I sometimes felt like a Bizzarro world shrink and that was OK. We laughed often....usually a chuckle....with a decent measure of guffaws thrown in. Welcome back to the colonies Woody! Thank you for being you (and we know you would not take that compliment purely for what it is....but that's OK ....whatever works).
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was due for some laughs and this movie brought the perfect dose. As with all of Woody Allen's movies, you need to be open minded and grasp the deeper meaning. I went with 4 people and we all really enjoyed the film.

This is going to have to be added to the list of Woody Allen's greats. Woody is a genius of a screenwriter, actor and director to begin with, but adding Larry David in to the main role in this movie was just perfect. Larry played the role that Woody usually does and he did it in his own quirky way, but is just works. It was hilarious, insightful, and full of that certain appeal that Woody's great movies always have. If you like either Woody Allen or Larry David, go see this movie. If you are like me and you are a fan of both of them, you are in for a real treat. By the way, I had to drive an hour to see this movie since it wasn't playing in my town and I would do it again in a heartbeat if that means anything.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Sloppy directing, poor acting by David and a one joke concept. We found this movie a huge dissapointment. The only bright spot was Ellen Rachel Wood. I knew we were in trouble when Allen has David look into the camera and speak to the audience - what cliche technique. David seems to be reading off of cue cards and the scenery was boring and repetitive. We have loved much of Woody Allens work but this was a bomb. Dont bother.

If you like Woody Allen and Larry David, you will like this movie. I can understand why some people won't enjoy it because you have to like this kind of humor. I do, and found it quite enjoyable. I wasn't expecting a good movie which helped, and you can't take it seriously. This is an Allen type comedy, with his usual message.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I'm not a massive Woody Allen fan and really didn't expect to laugh my way through a very entertaining movie. I was pleasantly surprised. The one liners and clever dialogue makes it hard not to keep listening attentively. Boris is a hilarious character and yes much of the story is unbelievable but the farcical nature and the exaggerated personas are exactly what makes it so funny. A little predictable towards the end but I could cope without a mindbending twist at the end. Sit back and don't take it too seriously (no a young girl wouldn't marry an old git like Boris in real life), you might just really enjoy this.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The opening of the movie was decent, but as soon as Evan Rachel Wood entered the scene with her horrific over-played Southern accent, the movie stopped being at all believable for me. Every scene with her was unbearable. We walked out of the movie before the half hour mark, and I don't walk out on movies. I love Larry David and like most of Woody's films.

This often funny, but fairly typical Allen movie with the women beautiful, interesting but unsophisticated being infatuated with Allen's over-educated, middle-aged nerds is autobiographical. How this young, vibrant girl could be in love with Larry David's grossly unattractive and annoyingly fatalistic character could only happen in Woody's dreams!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

With so much junk in theatres today it is a rare treat to see a movie with witty and intelligent dialogue. It would be refreshing if the Terminator and the like were terminated. A great follow up to Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The casting was perfect. Patricia Clarkson and Even Rachael Wood shined. Ed Begley Jr. was outstanding. Welcome back, Woody Allen, from Europe
Yes, I recommend this movie.
