I was bored in many parts of this movie. The action scenes were short and not that exciting and major leeps in plot were taken every times Holmes solved a major piece of the puzzle with the tiniest of clue (yes, I know, that's characteristic of the original novels but this is 2010, I'd like a little depth of story). I also had trouble understanding the fast, British accented, talking of Holmes which is unfortunate. The best part of the movie was the relationship between Holmes and Watson - they nailed it and it saved the movie. Two stars solely based on the character interplay - otherwise this would have been one star. Another hollywood blockbuster disappointment.

This movie is action packed. If you love a story line with twists and turns this is the one for you. Classic story of god vs evil. There is quite a bit of violence so PG -13 is the rating for that reason.

A very well acted and directed movie. I like how they took the time to show how Holmes' genius came from his ability to think 10 steps ahead of everyone else. A warning, this movie doesn't pander to the audience, it expects you to pay attention. So if you are expecting popcorn fluff (which I also occasionally enjoy) you may not like this film.

This movie was amazing with only two exceptions. First off, I was excited to see Robert Downey Jr. (from Iron Man) playing Sherlock Holmes. I had psyched myself up for this, and then, during the movie, they played an Iron Man 2 trailer. In my opinion, this made it somewhat hard to not think about Iron Man throughout the movie. Despite this, I love his version of Sherlock. Watson's portrayal was brilliant as well. The only other issue was the slow-mo. I feel the director took it a little too far. The explosion slow-mo was just one too many.
Despite this, it was amazing. Robert Downey and Jude Law made this movie brilliant.

I was a little disappointed that the movie was not true to character (at least the character that I was brought up to understand). I always thought that Holmes was a proper gentleman and not prone to fighting.

being an old time holmes fan i found this a refreshing spin on what could have been a tired re-vamp. robert downey brings a great perspective on the great detective, making him less stuffy and showing his flaws. jude law made an intersting choice for watson, younger, less stuffy- more physical. the story line was great and rachel mc adams is always great to watch. they seemed to have taken great care not to over-tic the plumbing, keping the story easy to follow and not too predictable. look forward to another film with downey & law.

I liked the movie, but it felt more like I was watching a House episode with Downey as House and Law as the oncologist. It was difficult to hear the dialogue thru a lot of the movie which also detracted from it. I didn't see any purpose of the street fight & thought it took away from the movie.

This movie had great action and a good story plot. You do have to listen carefully because the characters speak quickly and it can sometimes be hard to keep track. There is much more fighting by Sherlock than he ever did in the books but I found it exciting. I look forward to future movies with the famous character Moriarity.

Once I figured out that the story was written from the present-day perspective for Watson, it made a little more sense that he and Sherlock were at odds, but really, there isn't that much in the books that would indicate the characters were so competitive. Too much gore, too little logic (it is there, but done too fast and most all related to fighting). Lovely camera work, great settings, costuming, etc., but I have to agree the story and plot were weak and almost seemed to be borrowing heavily from Dan Brown's work.

Great performances by Jude Law and Robert Downy Jr. I like this movie over all and thought it was fun to go see. I wouldn't take children under the age of thirteen to this movie because of all the violence and murder, but to each their own. I enjoyed it and recommend it to others.

This film has plenty to enjoy, although it has a few flaws. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are excellent. They create vivid versions of Holmes and Watson. The characterizations were in keeping with the spirit of the material, as was the theme: the man of science versus the man of magic, and reason and logic win the day. The plot is flawed: we're thrown into a conspiracy to be unraveled, rather than a mystery to solve. The detective work is downplayed in favor of action sequences. The villains are menacing and villainous, but they are two-dimensional characters whose only purpose is to be defeated. I loved grubby look of London, but some of the obviously digital sets ruined the immersion. The music was just right all through the film.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The action was fast paced, and in my opinion, Downey Jr. brought an almost Johnny Depp-esque quality to Sherlock Holmes.

This movie was full of action, perfect guy movie. Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes had this almost autistic, highly intelligent, eccentric feel. He was always 2-3 steps ahead of everyone else and I thought it was very well written with some really good comical relief. Robert really shows off his acting ability and IMHO this is one of his best movies. I'm glad he's gotten sober.

at first, i wasn't sure about this movie; robert downey jr. is a great actor and jude law is one of my faves; i hadn't read any reviews before watching it and i think that gave me an open mind; i thought it was AMAZING and i think people need to give it a chance; it was a bit hard to follow at first but it had my attention the entire time (despite my sleepiness during the movie); it was definitely one of the top movies of the year!

Jude Law and Robert Downey are wonderful in this film! The plot is dark and takes awhile to develop but the interactive sceens with Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes keep the movie moving along. It was a nice break from all the action movies and romantic films out over the XMAS holiday. This is a movie both my husband and I enjoyed watching together and discussing the plot afterwards.

Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law were both excellent choices for the roles of Sherlock and Watson. Guy Ritchie was not the right choice for director. Instead of focusing on loud music and too many fight scenes, there should have been more on Holmes' mystery solving skills and use of logic and reason. Maybe I am too old school Basil Rathbone, but this movie was a big disappointment. If they make a sequel and get a new director - I am on board

Robert Downey Jr has been on my radar since the movie Less than Zero. Art immitating life? Perhaps! But he is a phenomenal actor and I enjoy watching him perform each time. Jude Law also became a favorite after the Talented Mr Ripley. The chemistry between the two in Sherlock Holmes is simply delightful. Downey's facial expressions show how he immerses himself into his character. I am still puzzled by Mary, her character does not convince me as a "good innocent" girl... or is it the actress... don't know...
Have seen the movie twice and will be purchasing it the moment it comes out... Robert Downey Jr is superb and I am hoping to enjoy this turn around of his life and career for years to come!

If you like Robert Downey Jr. then you will enjoy his portrayal of Holmes. He was outstanding! More action than you would expect from a traditional Sherlock Holmes story, but done well. Who would have thought that Guy Ritchie could actually direct? Wow! Jude Law and the rest of the supporting cast were excellent, but this is a Robert Downey Jr. show. Can't wait for the sequel! You know it's coming!

I am an all time (back to black and white) fan so 4 stars is great. A little slow at first but soon this movie captures your attention and doesn't release it till the very end. My dislikes are primarily superficial, not with the execution but with the characters. Downey was great as usual but "Watson" should have been played by someone more portly and he seemed a little to "athletic". I would have liked to see a bit more brains in solving predicaments. Not to fond of "Mary", hard on the eyes but appropriate for the times. Excellent graphics. Best of all, the ending is indicative of a continuation of the great Holmes. I can't wait!

Difficult to follow, difficult to understand British dialect and sometimes actors speak too fast to understand what they are saying. I sat in D-box. Why would you want to feel something when a guy gets hit in the face???

This movie is best for someone not familiar with Holmes or Watson either in literature or in the many move depictions. Once adjusted to the fact that Sherlock smokes a Popeye pipe instead of his signature one and no deerstalker hat, there still was the issue of Watson being such wild, weapon-wielding, tough guy with a chick in tow. Sherlock also likes to beat people up and dislocate jaws-scientifically planned. It's an action-adventure like so many others. The narrative become secondary to the fighting and action. Worse, all of Sherlock's brilliant deductions came in the manner of voice over and quick flash backs.

I liked this. Yes, it is dark, yes, the Holmes character is dark and has many issues, however, IF you read the original Sherlock Holmes, he was dark, had issues, drank too much, illicit drug use, sloppy, etc. So this movie does depict that Holmes, not the Holmes that Basil Rathborne?sp? of SH movies of the past depicted as perfectly coifed, mannered and tempered.
Even the issues with his partner's fiance were in the original book.
The actors did a good job portraying these two highly intelligent, flawed, human characters.
My 20 yr old nephew and myself both had a good time watching this, as well as the full theatre of people watching with us.
It was enjoyable, fun, dark, and entertaining isn't that what a movie is supposed to be?,
