This 2 hour 20 minute movie seemed to be more like a four-hour movie. While I understood the time period, the constant gloom and grime was almost like watching the movie in black and white. The plot, an evil, ego maniac seeking to take over the world has been done to death - a little like watching FOX news. So many lines were mumbled through, we missed some of the dialogue. (Our hearing is fine, thank you.)Die-hard Sherlock Holmes fans will probably be able to endure and leave with brave, half-smiles on heir faces; however, as I was exiting the theater, another disappointed fan was saying "I hated it!". Guess I'm not the only person left who goes to movies to be entertained rather than to be beaten down and slimed.

A perfect holiday movie...great story with action, humor and beautiful cinematography/CGI effects. Downey and Law make a great team. Hope a sequel is forthcoming...soon!

The character development was true to Doyle's books. Only Robert Downey Jr could have played Holmes. Jude Law's Watson completed the near-perfect pairing. The multiple fight scenes felt gratuitous and somewhat superficial. The special effects enhanced the story.

Die-hard fans of the novels may get their garters in a twist, but I thoroughly enjoyed this new take on the classic stories. Downey is a plucky Holmes and Law makes a great sidekick with plenty of interest beyond just the supporting role. The period feel, down to the muck and dirt that were ubiquitous in a world before automobiles, only enhanced my enjoyment.

well cast.. robert downey was great in the role with his crazy personality. I'm not a big jude law fan but really liked him in this role. Not one of my favorite movies but certainly enjoyed the action and acting.

My kids ages 11 and 14 loved it. I thought it was darker and more violent/scary than a PG-13 movie should be, but my kids said it "was a lot less violent than Avatar" (which I haven't yet seen). Daughter said it should win a best movie of the year award. I would wait another week to see it so that you don't have to sit in the front of the theater.

Very Entertaining. A fun family outing. Yes, it does compare to the TV show House. Both main characters, Holmes and Watson were very enjoyable and their banter was excellent. I suspect that it is one of those movies that each time that you watch it you will pick up something that you may have missed the first time.

It certainly depicted Sherlock Holmes in a light I hadn't expected. And I didn't care for that. It was cute, glitzy and the action scenes were great, but it just wasn't awesome.

This movie was fantastic. I imagine many people, including myself, are familiar with Jeremy Brett's A&E portrayal of Holmes, which he did so well. Not being familiar with the books, I cannot say it was true to the original character, but in that portrayal you can see the genius of Holmes in a rather subtle way. So, when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I though "Eh... Sherlock Holmes as an action hero... like Downey, Jr. as Iron Man?" But it was awesome! I was so pleasantly surprised. The movie/story/acting/sets - all incredibly well done. I loved it and definitely think it's worth a look.

Sherlock Holmes was a good time at the movies. With lots of action, some great dialogue/acting between Downey Jr. & Law, and a sleek but consistent set design it is a perfect Winter Blockbuster. Do NOT go in expecting your classic PBS version of Holmes or the intricacies of a Doyle novel. Just go in to get out of the cold and enjoy some Hollywood fun.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from beginning to end. While this was sort of "Sherlock Holmes meets James Bond," the movie was extremely entertaining. Great chemistry among the cast; I was reminded of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" by the Downey-Law chemistry! Definitely worth seeing...

I agree, not certain how it follows the stories, but it was entertaining. My wife and I equated it as well to House, but also a Beautiful Mind or Illusionist. Robert Downey did an exceptional job.

This was a great film as far as the acting of two of my favorites. The filming techniques are really fantastic with the slow mo of the fight scene for one. It is gritty, action packed and the plot is descent to allow for all the special effects. It is a period piece in England which you feel transported to in accuracy. They could have made it a half hour shorter and still pulled it off well. WORTH SEEING!

That's really the only word I can think to describe it. The trailer that hyped it apparently pulled the only funny portions and sucessfully made it appear to be very interesting, very funny. It was neither. My husband and I were so bored by midpoint we left. I have read other reviews that if we had stayed, it did improve ... but that's not entertainment to me if the viewer has to suffer through the majority of the movie just for a minute or two of satisfaction.

Well, I found myself pleasantly surprised at the end of this 2+ hour extravaganza from the former Mr. Madonna. Robert Downey Jr. continues to manage to insert sarcastic humor into roles that it would not seemingly be appropriate, yet, does so in a manner that still allows the viewer to take him seriously. Jude Law manages to play a second to Downey, yet stands on his own as well. The action is powerful, but does not take over the film. While the story was less than 'original' it certainly contained enough substance to keep the viewer interested in the outcome. Bravo, looking forward to the sequel!

I found this movie to be silly, what I call a "car chase" movie, but set in 19th Century London. Acting was great, special effects OK, story dumb and far fetched. Having watched many Sherlock Holmes movies from way back in the black and white era, I was not sure I would like yet another version--but I did! Much more action and technology as one would expect for this era but still filled with the amazing reasoning powers of Holmes and the complex character interplay between Holmes and Watson. And inclusion of a love interest of Holmes and his former female advisary adds rather than detracts. The movie ending makes one eager for the next film.
