Relax.... it's just a movie about someone's imagined world-ending scenario.
Sub-plots? ahhh... acting... hum...
I'd say the main reason people go to see movies like 2012 is because: 1) There is always someone out there that will find ways to exploit the fears of the masses, hence, this movie. 2) Special effects. C'mon, it's the end of the world, Ok? What did you expect, people sailing happily into the sunset?
At least I find some comfort knowing that the Lakers are the first ones to go down. :)
See it for what it is: another way to waste your time, not that we are lacking in entertainment options these days.
I give this movie four popcorns because it is not an Oscar-worthy movie but it is exactly what I expected it to be.

Although I wish Rolland Emmerich would have researched and verbalized the science surrounding the treories mentioned a little better and worked harder on an ending, I believe he did a very good job in presenting an escapist scifi thriller. I do admit it had a very thin subplot, but I along with many who went to see it went for the destraction and the destruction and carnage of the world as we know it. I love the genre and have to admit "I am Legend" is still the best, but I'd place this movie smoothly between that and "Dawn of the Dead" followed closely by "Day After Tomorow". If you love to imagine the end of the world, then you will love this film.

This movie had unrealistic situations and did not convey the actual emergentness of a situation of this magnitude. The only positive thing about this movie was the ending. Half way through the movie, I was hoping the earth would actually erupt and end my misery. Except for the special effects, the movie lacks anything substative in terms of the plot and acting. This movie isn't about the end of the world on 12/21/12 as predicted by many civilizations. While THAT movie will be interesting, this one is about a global disaster - known to world leaders in sufficient enough time that they have made preparations to survive it. Good performances turned in by the actors - esp. in light of such a lofty undertaking ... surviving an apocolypse via special effects to re-populate the world. It's an epic look at the topic through effects that are equally amazing and ridiculous! The writers/director give us a glimpse of their new world, who gets there, and some questions about the future of humanity. Whew.

OK this is not a movie about serious drama or significant plotlines, it is a typical disaster movie (but 5X better).
