What a disaster that this movie was snubbed by the vacuous Academy for the nomination for Best Picture, Director and any other category I can imagine.
A movie that every teen ager should be required to see. A movie that every non-believer in the Holocaust should be forced to see. A mandatory movie for every Judge in a hate crime trial should enforce as part of the convicted sentence, along with several other choices, such as Schindler"s List, Sophie's Choice ,Hotel Rwanda to name a few.

True stories are the best although I can't help but wonder sometimes how accurate and how much of it is the writers interpretation. When survival is threatened what a person will do. Great acting and enough action and drama for 2hrs. &17 min. Daniel Craig is becoming a favorite of mine.

The movie was very well done. Daniel Craig was amazing as well as Liev Schreiber. The fact that it is based on a true story is overwhelming. This movie showed the horrific cruelty and lack of human compassion during ethnic cleansing and war. I think everyone should see it to realize the intensity of disregard for human life during these times.

I'm at a loss for words. It was so good. See the movie...it say's it all. An amazing true story. Hero's in the mist of such a tragic, horrible time in history, and not so long ago. It's amazing that the most intelligent species on this earth can be so cruel to each other, for what? It's amazing what a human can do - the will and determination to not only struggle to survive against the cruelty of the 3rd Reich but to also save others. I want to read the book now. It's a reminder that peace is the only way.

What "Witness" did for Harrison Ford by breaking him out of the "Han Solo"/ "indiana Jones formula "Defiance" has done for Daniel Craig. First, the Bielski brother's main concern was how they would survie. Then fate places them in a situation where they must choose whether or not they are obligated to help others. After a raid goes wrong Tuvia (Daniel Craig) expresses concern and decides on a different approach. Brother Zus (Liev Schrieber) not satisied decided to join a local group of Russian fighters instead. Several times Tuvia's leadership is challenged and he is forced to make a deal with an insurection in his group. They were able to keep 1,200 Jews safe from Nazi oppression. A powerful movie.

Place, language, Bielskis partisans never fought with natzi's. Movie shows them as a brave, fighting for justice people meanwhile they killed 120 innocent people(kids and women). All they were doing was stealing food from the poor farmers and attacking innocent people. Their bravery was exaggerated.

Possibly one of Daniel Craig's best roles yet. Leiv Schrieber was a complete natural as well. From beginning to end, this movie kept you entranced, at the edge of your seat. I'd read about these rebel Jews who fought against the Nazi several years ago. Not in any American school curriculum mind you. I was doing some independent research and came across this fascinating bit of history. To finally see a movie made about these honorable chaps was incredibly satisfying.
Defiance is an Edward Zwick masterpiece! He was the perfect director (Glory/ Last Samurai) to craft this wartime drama about family, community, hope and survival.
And Liev Schrieber's performance was magnificent! Somebody give that boy an Oscar!
Now I'm ready for the Nat Turner bio-pic starring Will Smith, directed by Spike Lee, and based off the Kyle Baker graphic novel! But who'd have the balls to fund it?

The acing was excellent. The plot was very well done, and I recommend the movie highly. However, there was one glaring error that detracted from the historicity of the movie: the scene in which a German installation is attacked and vials of ampicillin are taken in order to treat typhus that had broken out in the Bielski camp could not have happened as protrayed. Ampicillin did not exist in the 1940s, and it wouldn't have been the right drug to treat typhus anyway. In fact, tetracycline, which would have been effective against typhus, was not discovered until several years later.

Gripping. Moving. Emotional. Memorable. 2hrs and 17mins went by way too fast....I was completely drawn in right from the start. I cried about every 15 minutes. This movie is based on a book.....read it. Apparently Liev Schrieber had been wanting to make this book into a movie for years. I'm so glad that he finally succeeded. Defiance did not disappoint on any level. It really drove home the horror of the Holocaust.

for an academy award for either the film or the acting of both Liev Schrieber and Daniel Craig. Aside from being a serious movie of the holocaust, I really enjoyed seeing this movie. It was well made and good to watch. Not too long, and not too caught up in just the suffering, but also gives us a very good understanding of the real impact on individuals that the Nazi reign of terror had on real people.
I was drawn to watch this movie based on an Charlie Rose interview held the night before seeing it.
Thanks goes to Ed Zwick and his staff for producing this much needed work.
BTW: The Ziegfeld theater was a very good venue to see it..

I enjoyed this move alot. If you like WWII movies, this movie in a way reminds me of enemy at the gates and schindler's list combined together. In the sense enemy of the gates character never really knew where he would be that night sleeping kind of moved around migrated around the city because he had too. Except, this movie is in a forest ,and schindlers list in the sense how he saved the jews.
