Better than what some critics said. I read it got too long and boring, but I felt it encompassed a lot and was the right amount of time. It was different than most movies in that it recalls a genre of the old time epic -- it even looked like they used the fake background in many scenes but it worked. It wasn't meant to be totally realistic -- just a good story that included action, romance, and adventure.

This film is being promoted as an "epic", but leaves much to be desired. The musical score and cinematography are over the top trying for that big film appeal. The digitized scenes add a cartoon type animation, and appear all too fake. The storyline has appeal, but certainly could have been told in less than 3 hours. The one redeeming factor is watching Hugh Jackman, but shame on him for participating in this poor impersonation of a real epic.

I would give this movie a 5 star plus rating. I t is everything and more that was advertised. It is much more than just a love story. It has beautiful music, and scenery . It actually takes you to Australia an 1939. It is very factual about the history of that time. The acting is wonderful and the magic and especially the little boy was superb!!!

Hugh Jackman was totally scrumptious. Nicole Kidman was a little on the boring side. Nullah was exceptionally amazing. The story was boring in some places but very exciting in others. The ending was very predictable. Overall, I probably would not see it again.

Being a Baz Luhrmann film,anything short of a gown made out of credit cards is to be expected. An epic story of Australia set in the late thirties through the beginning of WWII. Hugh Jackman did what I am absolutely certain he was paid to do,He was a jaw dropping gorgeous hunk of an untamed man,craggy! Nicole Kidman,who's talent always out shines her families weirdness is lovely. I am a sucker of epic action with romance and this one delivers. I cried for the last 30 minutes of the film and when I looked out at the the theatre chucked full of not only weeping women but equally blubbering men I knew this one was a hit. Baz Luhrman in all his brilliant opullance, craggy!

I had been looking forward to seeing this movie for a long time simply because I'm a huge Hugh Jackman fan. Little did I know that I would love it so much. It is an epic in every sense of the word. Not only is the cinematography exquisite, but it was actually the connection to the characters which made me break down in tears a few times during the film. I was a bit worried about the lengthy running time, but I can honestly say that the movie never dragged on.

Wow! This is an historical romance novel rolled out onto the screen in epic fashion. The intimate history of Australia's lost generations, the wild west atmosphere of Darwin in the 1950's, the bombing by the Japanese at the beginning of the war--the length of the movie was amazingly short at nearly 3 hours for the ground covered. Kidman and Jackman were superb!

I had not heard alot about this movie until a week before it opened. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed the movie. "Best Picture of the Year" for sure. The Acting was so good it will be a hard to pick the top actors award. The small boy was just as good as the Adults. Both my husband and I quite enjoyed the movie. Although somewhat predictable, it was moving to me to see several Aboriginees play main parts. Long overdue! As an art teacher, I've always been drawn to the Aboriginee culture and this held an additional appeal for me. The young boy was incredible and deserves an award for his role! Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman were great together. I recommend the movie to all who love historical epics.

For those who rate this movie less than 4 stars, you have been ruined by a Hollywood that produces action movies with no plot, content, or point (i.e. Transporter, XXX, etc.). An instant epic. The first 20 minutes of the movie was a bit peculiar, but once the seen is set, the acting cast draws you into this movie and makes 2 hours and 45 minutes go by in an instant. The newspaper reviews I read weren't great for this movie, so I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. The beginning was a little too comedic for the subject, but I guess they wanted us to like the characters. Once they left the ranch, the movie started to get interesting and like movies of old, held my attention. I really ended up liking the characters and as one person said the supporting cast was really good. I learned something about Australian history and I was moved by the plight of Nala and these children. I am not that big a Kidman fan, but she is good in this - amusing when she needs to be and tough when needed. Jackman was good - but what muscles! Worth looking at.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! Why anyone would rate this movie less than 3 stars is beyond us. Perhaps we are just too intellectually dificient and require little to satisfy our entertainment satisfaction than the "high brows". However, if that is so, there are a lot of us out there as the theater filled with applause!! It was GRAND watching Kiddman grow up and become a hardend, determined woman whose heart could be moved by a little "half breed" aborigini not to mention the Jackman whom any woman could fall for......hard! Our only complaint was that the movie was NOT long evough. We wanted it to continue on and on and on and......................

Australia is such a significant movie and one you'll remember forever. The sweeping scenery of the outback and northern territory in Australia is beautiful to see. The love story is magnificent and warms your heart all over. What I found memorable was the Aborigine sub-storyline with the importance on the spiritual beliefs of the aborigine people and the awareness it created about the discrimination these people suffered until recently. It is a fabulous movie and I plan to go again this week.

I am writing this review because I simply cannot understand why another reviewer saw no redeeming value in it. It was very well-acted, with great cinematography. It is a great story which takes the viewer through the gamut of emotion. Having been based on historical events made it all the more interesting for me. When it was over I could not believe 2 hours 45 minutes had passed already. I intend to see it again.

Destined to become a classic, Australia is a good old-fashioned movie that has something for everyone, whether you like nature travelogs, stories of the Old West, adventure, World War II, mismatched love, or historical sagas. Part "How the West Was Won" with "African Queen" and "Gone with the Wind.” The scenery and natural formations (including Hugh Jackman) are breath-taking. Unlike most current films, which are focused on a small market niche, the movie harkens back to a bygone era when every member of the family wasn't off in a different corner of the house watching something different, but rather would gather around the TV together on a Sunday night to watch Ed Sullivan, knowing that there'd be something for everyone.

This was a fantastic movie. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The theater was packed and everyone else seemed to have the same emotional ride that we did. The cinematography was stunning and the plot was engaging. It was a wonderful story.
