Following the book very closely, this film did an exceptional job of showing how the main characters have matured into young adults and continue to deal not only with the dark arts but with the everyday challenges of making that journey - friendship, loyalty, support, facing fears, bravery and love. If there had to be a Part 1 and a Part 2 to the last book, Part 1 ended at the perfect place. While I can't wait for Part 2, I am really sad to see the Harry Potter saga end.

They really did a great job keep to the feeling and events of the novel. A few changes here and there, but overall, I thought this movie really kept to the spirit of the book. The actors, now grown up, did a good job with their roles. I loved it! Absolutely I will go see it again!

The entire Potter series has slid slowly down a long slide into an abyss that seems almost built on it's former self. I could use the words "parody of itself" but even that isn't quite right. The characters of Potter and his friends are shadows of their former selves. Hogwart's isn't even seen in the movie at all and Snape is the only teacher left we see. Potter is powerless over what's happening which follows the book but the actors seem disinterested in their parts as detached from wanting to keep doing it or melancholy about the series ending. After all, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), has been forever type-cast and will probably never appear in another part believably like Leonard Nimoy or Jimmy Doohan from Star Trek, who played their parts so well that no one could ever see them in anything else. Am I sad Harry Potter will end? Yes and no. I'm sorry that the story is over but no, I won't be sorry that this thing has stretched out way farther than it should have and much further than the actors, for their young age, should have been pushed. Years from now we'll hear about how they suffered during the filming of this series of movies as child actors and that's just sad.

I'm not a reader if the books but look forward to the movies. That said, the movie is good, not great but good. The editing is choppy and a bit inconsistent. The special effects are superb. Doby never looked more real. I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. We look forward to the last part!

This felt less like movie, and more like a series of scenes. Actors are all superb, locations, filming, music, all top notch, but this movie failed by serving up the visual equivalent of soundbites rather than attempting to tell the story of the book. As a massive fan of the book series, and as a massive apologist of the film series, I enjoyed what I saw, but it was mostly a factor of seeing beloved characters and situations on screen, not in the sense of escapism or being magically transported to another place via film, which, in a movie where magic is the actual subject, is a fatal failure.

The Deathly Hallows part 1 was frighteningly dark and ominous, just as it should be. The movie did justice to the book (so far) and we were able to see more depth of character than ever before. There was an honest urgency and uncertainty throughout which mirrors real life, taking Harry Potter past the realm of fairy tale to something closer to reality. For those who haven't read the book, one cannot be certain at this point who will "live happily ever after", if any.

I love the Harry Potter world, but I wouldn't choose this as my favorite. It did keep us involved for the 2.5 hours (or so), but some of the involvement was giggling at moments that were probably meant to be serious. That wasn't just me, but much of the audience! Purists will feel that too many liberties were taken in the inevitable need to summarize the action. I had been worried that the movie could get boring since Book 7 did have rather long sections with nothing much happening, which was completely intentional on Rowlings part. In the movie, we didn't feel the same frustration with inactivity, and I think that was actually a good thing even though that aspect wasn't quite so true to the book.

My worst fear came true as HP7 Part 1 starting showing so many deviations from the book. There were deviatios in HP6 too. For example, when the trio escapes from the wedding, they land at Tottenham Court Road and not in some theater district. Dobby does not bring Mundungus back with Kreacher, only Kreacher does.
Also, there was a lot of scope for some good action and spell throwing but the movie was just like a travelogue.
My advice, if you have read the book, stay away from the movie.
