This felt less like movie, and more like a series of scenes. Actors are all superb, locations, filming, music, all top notch, but this movie failed by serving up the visual equivalent of soundbites rather than attempting to tell the story of the book. As a massive fan of the book series, and as a massive apologist of the film series, I enjoyed what I saw, but it was mostly a factor of seeing beloved characters and situations on screen, not in the sense of escapism or being magically transported to another place via film, which, in a movie where magic is the actual subject, is a fatal failure.
If your kids, of any age, are fans of the darker things, then this a movie for them. Fans of a Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and the like will be totally drawn into this fairy tale and come out the better for it on the other side.
My daughters are 6 and 10 and they weren't scared in the least.
