At least for the adult viewer, this was the best in the series, largely due to the decision to cut the movie in half. The first Potter film was iconic, but uninspiring. The second was more interesting, but lacked acting chops. Both had an immature feel that turned off a lot of older viewers, but was acceptable given the subject matter. The third was perhaps the best, but had a whimsical feel to it that didn't quite jive with the underlying premise. Movies 4-6 improved in terms of the story-telling, but had a "rushed" feel - particularly Order of the Phoenix.
The strength of Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 was in the pace. It moved briskly, but made a point to capture many of the "smaller" details of the books. This would not have been possible had the entire book been squeezed into one movie. The cast arguably put in their strongest performance to date. The story-telling is fantastic, full of drama and suspense. Therein lies the potential weakness of the movie; the intense story may turn off some younger viewers. Judging by the box office receipts thus far, that has not been an issue.
Highly recommended - I'd give it 4.5 stars if possible.

If you've read the books or kept up with the movies, you'll understand exactly what's going on here. It's been a while since I read this book or saw the previous movie, but I had no trouble keeping up. Harry & co. are at it again, on a desperate mission to find the remaining horcruxes. It is a bit dark and dreary, as is the book, but the filmmakers have done it again: they managed to capture the essence of J.K. Rowling's descriptions and put them on screen exactly the way they are mentioned in the books. Great movie - can't wait for the next one!

Don't let the title of the review fool you; I enjoyed this movie. The only problem I had was that it definitely *felt* long, as the action is sparse and the dialogue heavy. What action there was was done very well (some of the best, if not *the* best in the series' history) and the dialogue scenes weren't without their merit. I just had hoped that I'd feel the decision to split the film into two parts was more than simply a money-grab/runtime issue. I read the book, like many others, and remembered it feeling more punchy and well-paced. I felt the film dragged a good stretch in the middle and definitely left the faster pace for the second part next year. All-in-all, it was good, but a bit too drab for my tastes at times.

It's been a while since I've read through all the books, but I do remember loving the 6th and 7th book - all the backstory and character development! This movie followed the book well. Some of the action scenes were too bumpy to actually watch.
It actually made up for a lot of info that was missing from the 6th movie, which I appreciated, but it did make things a little disconjointed.
Overall, they didn't screw this up. They did (the first half of) the book justice. Go see it.

I sat between those that read, and reread the books, and a few that have never picked up any of the books. All agree that there were a lot of "hold for emotion" scenes that could have been left out. It got compared to a big party. Now and again you hear that someone left, or something bad happened somewhere that you missed, and mostly you got to wait with some friends till something interesting happened. Over all a good movie, but not great. And parents when you hear that the movies are getting darker it has nothing to do with the lighting.

If you haven't read the book, it may be hard to understand. There isn't enough time in the movie until the end that explains what Horcruxes are and what the significance of the deathly hallows is.

An excellent adaptation of the novel. Only a few details are omitted, probably due to time constraints. The quality of the acting is spectacular. Emma Watson steals almost every scene. This is easily the best of the Potter films to date, and it creates a lot of eager anticipation for the final installment. Bravo for a job well done.

This franchise has done a great job staying true to the books. This is a dark book and a dark movie. Another well done addition to the series. Harry, Ron and Hermione are such well developed characters.

"Deathly Hallows Part 1" is a solid adaptation of the first half of the final novel and the split was very much worthwhile. There are many touching moments, but some welcome changes as well. While there are occasionally moments that drag, on the whole the film is paced very nicely. Additionally, I especially enjoyed the manner in which the "Tale of the Three Brothers" was presented. Scenes such as the seven Potters and the ending with Dobby were very well done.

I was happy to see that they followed the book very closely. The actors are even better in this movie as they face the worst. I enjoyed the extra humor...it was in the perfect spots. I laughed and cried. It was great and I can hardly wait to see it again.

For a 2.5 hour movie, time flew by in this movie. I was always fully invested in the film and don't think I looked away from the screen once. Loved every moment of it and I'm looking forward to the second part.

This movie was excellent. It was definitely smart to make it into 2 movies. They should have done that with Order of the Phoenix too.I think they split it at the most appropriate part. I wish part 2 was coming out tomorrow, instead of 8 months from now. i will definitely see this one again.

I, like others, have been dissapointed in the adaptations of the the book to the movie. Several key items had been left out of the previous movies so that I questioned whether or not the final movie would be able to be told. However, this installment told just enough that people who had not read the books could understand what was going on. I loved the fact that the story line of the movie kept pretty much on track with the story line of the book. I will definitely be counting down to the release of the final movie.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 is very well done, given that i have actually read all the books. You can't put every detail into a movie and what they choose to include flows well, makes sense and keeps what you need to know from the book in the movie screen play. i'm really happy they divided this book into two parts so that a better telling of the book could be translated to film. This installment of the Harry Potter saga is so much better than the last two films in keeping true to the book.
The movie is well acted, the lighting, editing, effects are excellent. i enjoyed how they created a truly grim feel for the whole movie because when i was reading the book, that i how it was, i felt anxious anxiety turning those pages, it was bleak times, Harry desperately not knowing what to do.
i'll be attending again, buying the dvd and looking forward to Part II.

Part 1 rocks, if you don't see this then you will miss out big time. I have read all the books and the movies have followed along the and been true to the story. This one was no exception, from Harry and the gang being on the run to being captured by the death eaters, it was awesome!!!!!

Have not read any books but have seen all the movies. I did like this movie better than a few of the last as I found it not so 'dark'. It was nice to see a little humor.

After every other HP movie, I've been disappointed, sometimes furious, at how they come up so far short of the books (most times unnecessarily so). This movie, however, was absolutely fantastic, the screenplay masterful. What have all the other HP movies been lacking the most? Valuable interaction and meaningful dialogue/character development. By centering the movie around Harry, Ron, and Hermione (the 3 actors take it to another level in this movie), we see the best interactions yet. The music is phenomenal, giving the movie a horror-film feel at times (which it should have). If you haven't read the books, pay close attention and be sure you've watched the other movies and know what's going on...you will be riveted by this one. Can't wait for July!

Some of the reviews are saying the 'magic' that we saw in movies one and two just isn't there in this, the next-to-last installment. No, it's not. Simply because the 'magic' to which they refer was the NOVELTY of the series! The characters no longer are surprised by their abilities, and have learned the basics of magic.
What this movie DOES give us, however, is a wonderfully detailed and developed community of wizardry! Harry's grown up and so has the story - it's a fantastic journey that draws us into the trouble and threat that the heroes are facing.
Great movie - definitely worth the ticket price!
And I don't begrudge them the additional ticket price for the upcoming part two - it wouldn't have been nearly as good if they had crammed everything into one show.

I really enjoyed HP7-1. Unlike some of the earlier movies (ahem, HP6, anyone?), there was much more emphasis on the actual story and just enough attention paid to the side issue of teenage angst. I didn't find it overly dark, but I probably wouldn't take a very young child (say, under 8 or so).
Most of the deviations from the book made sense to me, again, unlike some of the earlier movies. Although I must say, Hermione wearing perfume while on the run was just silly. Why couldn't Greyback simply smell her human-ness? I'm sure being on the run would provide its own smell-track, iykwim.
Anyway, apart from HP1 - the most "magical" of the movies - this was my favorite by far. Go see it - I'll certainly be back!
